Are subs supposed to change depth that fast?

Are subs supposed to change depth this fast? Even at creep speed in real-time they move up or down like a rocket. Is this realistic?

Wondered that myself. From my 688i days (the game [;)]) I remember feeling like the speed and depth adjustments could take forever.

At 5 knots with a 10 degree down angle you should be about 1.5 feet per second of depth change. More speed or angle will increase the rate .

Subs can also adjust their ballast tanks to change depth IIRC. So a plain 'ole speed calculation wouldn't be factoring that in.

True. I didn't want to go into trimming with ballast and discussions of neutral buoyancy. You can definitely change depth quicly that way at a cost iin noise.

The short answer must surely be that it's not realistic for subs to move up and down like rockets.

Care to add some dive and surfacing times for discussion?

Thanks guys. I've added this to the list of things to look at.

Thank you. They are moving up or down at least 6 meters per second real-time even when nearly stationary.

I have noticed that stationary subs (zero knots) dive at 6 meters per second, and rise at 2 meters per second. I hope the fast 6 meters per second stationary dive speed can be toned down some in a future patch.
