[MODS- move to Tech Support] Mac Bugs Make The Game Nearly Unplayable

Civil War 2 is the definitive grand strategy game of the period. It is a turn based regional game with an emphasis on playability and historical accuracy. It is built on the renowned AGE game engine, with a modern and intuitive interface that makes it easy to learn yet hard to master.
This historical operational strategy game with a simultaneous turn-based engine (WEGO system) that places players at the head of the USA or CSA during the American Civil War (1861-1865).

[MODS- move to Tech Support] Mac Bugs Make The Game Nearly Unplayable

Post by Davekhps »

Just bought the game last night, running the game in Windows 8 Bootcamp via VMware Fusion 5.03, using an Apple Wireless Keyboard and Apple Magic Mouse.

I've encountered the following problems in the tutorial, unfortunately they also appear in-game as well:

-- The Delete key does nothing, so I can't cancel orders.
-- The Ctrl key does nothing, so I can't use any Ctrl-click functions (looking into cities, selecting multiple units to form divisions, etc.)
-- Right-click on the Magic Mouse works sporadically: it didn't work to reduce added replacements on the War Production screen (tried in the tutorial, I could only add via left click, right click did nothing). However, right click *did* work on the map to remove Decision Cards added during the tutorial.

Sooo... how do I address these issues to make the game work for me? Are there alternate, on-map click buttons to replace the Delete, Ctrl, and Right-clicks?

Thanks,
Dave

Okay, thanks to Google I figured out the Delete key (I need to press fn+Delete, works fine then).

Other issues remain unsolved...

Annnd, fixed the Ctrl key, although it's a kluge:

-- In VMware, go up to Preferences.
-- Select Keyboard & Mouse
-- Select + to add a new key map
-- Select the Command key (i.e. the Windows key in your Virtual Machine)
-- Select "Control" as the map

In game, pressing the "Control" key and the Command key simultaneously will now work as a Ctrl click when you use your left click on the mouse, allowing you to select multiple units.

Now, the only thing left is that Right-Click... which I'm wondering is a bug since it works some times, but not all the time...?

(This does, however, remove the "Windows" key functionality from the Command key in VMware unless/until you switch back).

Hi Dave

sorry you are having problems. The game is not intended to run in bootcamp and it has never been tested or supported on a Mac.

You need a 2 button mouse to be able to use the right click feature in windows. I have one for my Mac at home. Without that there isn't really anything you can do here as far as I know. Windows assumes a 2 button mouse.

However if there are simple things we can do to make it easier to run on Mac we'll see what can be done. The first step is to make sure you have the right hardware.

I play ACWII running Boot Camp on a MacBook Pro. All keys work fine. VMWare is the reason yours don't. That's why I put up with couple minute hassle of a boot into Windows for real and not virtual.

Bootcamp won't work either for me on my iMac-- the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Magic Mouse still doesn't have complete functionality in Bootcamp for certain programs (yes, even after downloading the Bootcamp tools and drivers... it's just a quirk that unfortunately affects more than just CW2).

That all said, I had a spare wired PC mouse and keyboard that I'm now using in Bootcamp, and CW2 works great that way, so I just have to do that if I want to play it. No big deal, just a few minutes worth of time in exchange for a few hours of gaming :)
