Finding generals

Post by mikeCK »

How do I get a list of my generals like in ACW1? I know that in the ledger I can see a list of commands, but that doesn't list generals that are alone and doesn't list generals under another officers command. For example, AS Johnson has appeared with other generals. Problem is, I cannot find him. Also, I want to locate all of my generals whether they are in command or not. It was easy in ACW...you just opened the first page of the ledger and you had a page that listed all of your generals

I requested this, too, but received silence as a response... hum... The further into the game, the more critical that option is. Finding generals to place in charge of corps and armies should be a quick look-up, not a roll-over for every stack with a leader.

There is a switch in F1 window which lets you see individual units, not stacks. Use the switch and then use filter non general units icon. All you generals should be listed there.

They're listed, but not individually. So, if I'm looking for Thomas, for instance, but he's in a stack, I have to mouse-over each stack until his name appears. Gets worse when trying to find simply an available two-star to transfer to a new corps (sometimes they're division commanders, sometimes just an extra in a stack). Besides, that screen does not order then by stars, only by command ability.

Seriously: I used the commander list all the time in CW1. Really miss it...

Well peeps... the only option you got atm is the filter function to list various commands. Hide stacks without leaders, but you got to hover the mouse over the various commands to find your general, unless you know his stats.

CAn this option be added in a future patch? I can imagine being Lincoln..."Hey Stanton, I need to replace Rosecrans...I'm looking at Thomas, what do you think?"

Stanton "Great choice Mr President"
Lincoln "Well, make the transfer immediately"
Stanton "Well, that could take some time Mr President. See, we don't know where he is right now"
Lincoln "Ok...so how do we find him"
Stanton "Oh sir, it's no problem, I'll just have to manually go through the rosters of every unit in the Federal Armies...eventually his name will pop up and we will know where he is!
Lincoln "wow! How convenient! Get started...man, I sure hope we can find out where he is before next month or we lose Chatanooga!"

Here is filtered list generals only, individual unit filter on, regardless of how many generals are in the stack:

Hi Ace,

Yep, got that. But ACW1 had a "generals only" list that let me find a specific person and a sort by stars. Very, very helpful when trying to find a 2-star for a corps, or responding to "so-and-so has been promoted to Major General" -- when you click on the message note now it takes you to Washington (or Richmond, I would assume for South). The ACW1 list also noted who was promotable that turn (a nice and useful touch!).

Ace, the issue is finding a general that is in another stack. For example, if general "ace" is in Longstreets command but no units are specifically attached to him, he won't show up on that list. So in my game, somewhere...general AS Johmson is ready to assume command. But because he is not commanding anything right now, there is no way to find him!

Totally agree. I really miss this feature from AACW. I used it all the time and hope AGEOD will incorporate this filter setting for CWII's ledger in the future. I can click, drag and scroll, and get used to it, to find the general I need; but, it's still tedious.

I agree the list is not as transparent as it used to be, but however all the generals are listed in this list, by their name, or by the name of their attached division/brigade. For example, Longstreet is listed separately of Beauregard, yet they are all in the AotP stack. The screenshot is from turn 1, July campaign.
You can not sort generals by rank, yet I find viewing the rank of generals at glance rather easy since it is depicted by stars rather than numbers.
I remember seeing somewhere Pocus said something about flashing stats in forces ledger if general is available for promotion, that would be an improvement.

I am not sure that you are correct. Look at the screenshot, G.W. Smith and Bushrod Johnson are in the same stack both unattached to brigades, and they are both listed in the Ledger if the individual unit filter (upper left filter) is on. Did you know, if you are looking for specific generals, you can sort the ledger by name? The old dedicated generals ledger may have been prettier, but individual generals can be easily found in here as well.

You just have to click on the upper left and upper right filter to display individiual generals only[8D]

Finding generals in Release Candidate 4 / Official patch will be much easier with the Units List. You'll get their name, one per line, and only one line per general, with the right filter (filtering out stacks w/o leaders). [:)]

Dunno....I click on hen upper left arrows that switch between units and command and I get a list like yours...only a lot of generals are missing. Mainly, all the ones in Richmond and such that aren't in command of anything.

Either way, Pocus says the RC4 build fixes (changes) this

Sorry, I was looking at RC4 while you were looking at RC3. I didn't know they were different in this part.

Just downloaded RC4. Using the Units List + filtering out stacks without leaders works great. Thanks to AGEOD for their responsiveness.

Works great, but another issue: is there any way to easily find which generals are eligible for promotion?

I know every turn there's a report, but if I miss it, I won't see it again unless I (fortunately) click on the right stack. Would be nice to have a "one stop shop" that always shows which generals I can promote. (Also would be nice to have an option for filtering/displaying wounded generals, generals who were killed, etc.)

Similarly leader-related: how often do generals promote and/or get killed in battle? Seems pretty infrequent in my games. Although, in my RC4 game, I just lost Sherman in battle at the end of 1861... ouch, that hurt!
