Replayability ?

The new Cold War turned hot wargame from On Target Simulations, now expanded with the Player's Edition! Choose the NATO or Soviet forces in one of many scenarios or two linked campaigns. No effort was spared to model modern warfare realistically, including armor, infantry, helicopters, air support, artillery, electronic warfare, chemical and nuclear weapons. An innovative new asynchronous turn order means that OODA loops and various effects on C3 are accurately modeled as never before.

Replayability ?

Post by Meteor2 »

Seem to be an interessting title and concept (expecially for me because I was in one of the german units during the 198x...in the area).
For those, who have played a bit until now: How would you rate the replayability ?
Really fix and a repetition of a scenario is not interesting or can it be different from the playing before ?
Troops ? Positions ? Intentions ?

I think its very high.

At the moment, I am just playing the smaller scenarios, but there is so much to try out - direction and order of approach, where to set up your defences, how to balance force structure and so on, that each requires multiple plays just to explore the obvious strategies.

Then if you start taking off the stabiliser wheels - such as auto re-supply, you find that what had worked earlier just doesn't now.

Its the most impressive 'out of the box' game I've encountered.

Meteor2,

I'll back up loki100's comments and say we are seeing a lot of players replaying the small Tutorial scenario many times to do it better, use different tactics, and understand the interactions of the units and command model. I did the Tutorial scenario and it is built to show all the units types and it is in no way in the same class as Steve "Mad Russian" Overton's main scenarios for the game. Those have a high replayability because each one plays so very different, the AI will come at you in different ways, and you will want to do better than you did the last time. I think if you check the posts you'll see players enjoying taking a beating by the game and turn right around and play again because they reviewed what they did and really want to do better the next time.

So far the few scenarios that I have replayed have worked out differently. It was more than just the combat results, but also other randomized/non-deterministic factors that drove it.

For example, in one scenario I sent a CAS down a covered lane where I had previously laid mines. There was a traffic jam that my planes helped clear. [8D] The next time I played I tried the same trick and there was an active 2S6 sitting there that wiped out my CAS before they could hit anything.

IMHO, great stuff!!

And another question regarding this topic:

Is it possible to re-play a given scenario with another set of conditions, as
- starting time of the day (night instead of noon)
- weather condition (fog instead of light clouds)
- season (winter instead of summer)
or something like this ?

That may change scenarios a lot.

No, the conditions are set.

There is no variable settings for the scenarios. That would make it impossible to balance a scenario.

At the moment there are only summer maps. The original setting for Red Storm was winter but because of the tremendous effort it would have required to do all the winter graphics it became a summer campaign.

We will be looking both on our end and the community with the addition of other seasons for the map art. I've added the idea of random start conditions to the wish list for review.

Thanks!

+1 for the random ideas. Anything to aid replayability
