Fragile cavalry??

Post by Davekhps »

I hadn't paid close attention, but after making some dedicated cavalry/horse arty divisions, they all seem to have disappeared.

Which means one of two things:
1. Either they are getting chewed up in combat at a far greater rate than infantry units;
2. There's a bug that's making cavalry disappear.

I would assumed #1 is correct-- albeit unfortunate-- but I can't discount #2. I had *five* brigades of cavalry and two horse arty in a Union division under Sedgewick a few turns ago; they're all gone now, just Sedgewick by himself.

Anyone else notice this?

Ditto gunboats now... Foote had 5 river gunboats and now he's there by himself, no combat seen... ???

You probably have them in an out of supply situation. Units without supply will slowly die like that.

Nope, not supply.

There's a bug. In addition to disappearing cavalry, I just lost an entire corps under Crittenden-- it captured Island #10 one turn, disappeared the next.

Did you sail with ships past the CSA forts?

Dang, that's grounds for an epic rage-quit!

I may have with Foote... can't recall. Are forts that deadly?

One thing I've noticed- how can you tell in the battle report that you've lost ships? I just see personnel casualties from naval fights, no actual ships sunk.

Likewise, my game stops to show me land battles, but naval battles just sail right by (pun intended) without a report... is there a way to change this?

Naval-fort artillery duels are only displayed by a quick animation during turn execution and a message after the turn. Ship to ship battles are shown the same way as land battles.
The forts are deadly if you pass by them with unarmed transports.

And, if you have the ships toggled for bombardment, they can take a heck of a beating from land units. Could be you're seeing a combination of these.

I noticed in AACW that my exchange ratio for hits btwn ships and forts was about 5-1 in favor of the forts; my ships got pounded. Is this WAD? The Law of Averages states I'll take a pounding from time to time, but my ships repeatedly wound up on the short end of the stick.

Wooden ships of the time could not tackle fortified land positions. Most of the damage to ironclads however is transfered from hit to cohesion losses. Look at your ironclads the turn after, they are exhausted but not beaten.

In CW2, fleets will do a bit more, plus now ironclads can really soak up a lot of damages, as Ace says...

I admit mid-19th century naval history is not my strong suit, and I'm sure AGEOD did their homework. I'm looking forward to bringing my ironclads into port for 2 weeks of R&R rather than extensive repairs.
