MapMaker - making F keys usable? (and other suggestions)

Post by joeyeti »

Hi folks,

it would really help if the F keys (on a Windows keyboard, not sure about Macs?) could be used to select the tools (F1 - Selection tool, F2 - Line tool etc.).

It would really help with editing shapes so that you do not have to move the mouse away from the shape and instead press a dedicated key...

That is all unless I missed something and the tools already are selectable by keyboard?

Suggestion nr. 2

The layer window could be upsized to fill the whole height of the window, currently it seems limited vertically between 70px and 620px on the screen. Especially on bigger screens this is wastes space :)

Suggestion nr. 3

It would help to "standardize" the basic controls between Scen-, Map- and Estabmaker... For instance MapMaker has reversed mouse zooming compared to Scenmaker etc.

Suggestion nr. 4

A small nitpick is that any opened map does not start maximized - MapMaker could remember the last window state (maximized vs. non-maximized) and open maps accordingly.

Yes incredibly annoying [:@]

Also a 100m grid would be good, as has been mentioned by someone before.

Good news to Suggestion nr. 1 (F-keys)!

I made a script in AutoIt (Windows platform) that handles this for you - you press F1 and the script literally moves the mouse over to the Arrow tool icon (instantly), clicks it and returns the mouse to its original position (coordinates stored before moving away originally). The same with F2 - Draw tool and F3 - Trace tool.

It also checks if you currently work in MapMaker, so as to not interfere with other programs, when you swith to them (as the script runs in background). So far I have not implemented an Exit key for the script itself, so you need to close it in the icon bar...

I did not do the Zoom and Hand tools as these can be replaced with Mouse wheel zooming and Space bar already.

Are there any other keys/functions in MapMaker that are not mapped currently and could be? We have the whole F4-F12 at our disposal (not mentioning other possible unused combinations)...

a. I will look into possibilities of amending Suggestion 2 in AutoIt (whether it supports internal in-app window resizing) and Suggestion 4 (this should also not be hard to amend, but is not top priority). As to Suggestion nr. 3, not sure if I can reverse the function of the mouse wheel in AutoIt...
