an/aps-20 radar

Post by f4migcap »

hey guys, have a quick newbie question. The radar carried by alot of Lockheed Neptunes in the game is the an/aps-20 radar and in the description for for its abilities it says 'Air Search, Heading Info, Range Information, Speed Information'.
Does that mean it only has air search capabilities? I know during the Falklands war a Neptune found the HMS Sheffield with its radar before it was sunk by an exocet missile.

Could those Neptunes have EMS gear?

I believe they do have EMS gear. I also found an interesting article from the October 2011 issue of 'Naval History' put out by the US Naval Institute where it mentions the AN/APS-20 radar was used for detecting Subs snorkeling so it sounds like it has a Surface Search capability.

Also the radar is installed beneath the fuselage, which suggests a surface search intention.

AN/APS-20 was a surface search radar, you are correct.

Oops. The 1980-2015 db has been updated, will auto-synch the 1950-1979 database [8D] There could be variants of the radar that are in 1950-1979 database but not in the 1980-2015 database, so Paul would be great if you could check that.

Thanks!

Thanks guys! Yeah, i just found out that the AN/APS-20 radar was also used as on several AEW aircraft like the EC-121 and Shackleton AEW 2 so it sounds like there were several versions of it. Thanks again for responding so quickly [:)]

Yes there is an updated database on the way, it got a little delayed as I've been busy coding the Speed/Altitude stuff.

Thanks [8D]
