[FIXED PRE-v1.11] Landing at an allied airbase

Post by Mgellis »

Question...

I thought it was possible to land one's aircraft at an airbase or airport belonging to an allied side.

I've set up one side as an ally to the player side (Friendly/Friendly...and their airports shows Blue, with the little A for Ally). But every time I try to set up a Ferry mission, I get a message that I must set up a valid destination. I did select a Runway as the unit where the aircraft would land, and it should be able to land since it is a 3,000-m runway and the aircraft I tried were a) helicopters and b) F-18s.

What am I missing, leaving out, and/or doing wrong? I'm stumped.

(Of course, if I somehow got it wrong and you cannot land at an ally's base, that would explain it.)

Thanks.

Mark try just selecting the base/group as the destination.

If you want post the file and I'll take a look.

Okay, now I can get it to work. I think it must have been a database update issue because when I updated to Build 446, that fixed it.

No, I was wrong. It is doing it again. One interesting symptom...it will not show non-player groups as groups unless I'm using God's Eye View mode. I wonder if that is what's keeping me from selecting the site as a ferry destination...I could do it at first because it was in the editor and I had the God's Eye View mode on, I think.

I will post a copy of the file shortly.

(Okay, I think I was able to upload it here...)

You can specify the airbase in the mission editor but the problem is once they land you can only get them up by assigning them to another mission because they appear as individual units. (Grrrr!) This one is on us.[:)]

In the interim can you use a Single-Unit airfield? These are always the best to use if the air base isn't to be a target.

So to set up the mission.

Select the airbase, launch mission editor, create ferry mission and be sure this new air base is selected. Should work out fine.

Thanks, Mike. I appreciate your help on this.

I can certainly use the single-unit airbase for the time being, although I kind of prefer the regular ones.

A bit more information that might help...I see you got the aircraft to land; I actually can't even figure out how to do that. I can't select even a friendly runway for a ferry mission if I can only select a unit rather than a group for the ferry mission destination--I just get an error message telling me I that must select a valid destination. And since I can't get the game to show non-player groups, so I cannot select the airfield.

In short, the root of the problem seems to be that I cannot get the game to show me non-player groups as groups unless I am in the God's Eye View mode.

Oh well. I'm sure it will be fixed fairly soon. Thanks again.

Hi Mark

Thats exactly it:) You need to be in God's eye to order the group to successfully land at an airbase that a group. So view in God's eye, grouped view and select the AB icon and then create the mission. The pain is getting them to take off again. I think our fix should be that we allow you to view allied and neutral fields as group like you do your own (I think).

In the meantime the single serving air base should work. Unit count does impact performance so using these have other benefits as well. If they base could be a target though I'd keep the grouped air base.

Okay, please don't hate me...

The single-unit airfields are supposed to be visible when you have them on auto-detect, right? Even if they belong to another side?

I can see the new Thai single-unit airfield in God's Eye View, but NOT if I switch that mode off. Which, of course, means I can't see them when I'm actually playing the scenario.

On the bright side, the invisibility thing appears to be working just fine. :)

(This could be solved by just making extra entries for all of the single unit airfields, but making the second set visible. So there would be an invisible set and a visible one.)

Start the scenario and they will appear.

Remember god's eye view is what you see not the side you're working on sees. Once the clock starts they will autodetect those units.

Mike,

I tried that. In fact, I tried reinstalling build 446. One allied side, Landing Zone Baker, shows up fine, but Thailand, with the "invisible" single-unit airfield, does not. Here is the new version of the file...

If you can start the scenario and you DO see the Thai airfield, that means there is something wrong with my system. I'm not sure what to do then except maybe just reinstall the whole game. If that works, though, it's well worth the time to do it! :)

Jeez that's weird. No don't reinstall. Seems like something broke the comm channel between the two.

Okay quick fix. Remove the US side, add the units again, set postures and you should be able to see Thailand's units just fine.

Did you delete a unit or anything like that when you set this up?

Okay, I think that did it. Let me play around with it for a while. If it works, it may be about ready to upload and let other people try it out.
