Question on mine-clearing

Post by MaB1708 »

Watching Baloogan do the Lightning Strike I stumbled over the DDG Bainbridge and the remark that only this vessel comes with AN/WLD1 RMS. I checked and its a remote minehunting installation. Now, when I look at the database I cannot see anything related to minehunting, device is not in. I would expect sth that is different for this vessel.
Manual says for Mine-sweeping to "select a mine search or -hunting-capable platform", but how do I find out? Or will mine hunting work with all ships? Cannot imagine that.
I checked a flying mine-hunter the MH-53 sea dragon. It is classified as a MCM-platform and has the suitable sensor e/q on board (in the db that is).
But what qualifies a surface vessel to mine-hunt, where is that reflected in the database? And especially on the Bainbridge: where is that device? Should I not see it either as an onboard function or - which might represent real life ops better - as a "boat" associated to the vessel?
Cheers,
Martin

Hi Martin

Minehunters in the DB typically have the prefix M or MCM or something close to that. We generally also add a comment to the name noting if they carry and UUV or remote systems.

You can see what sonar systems have mine hunting capability in the ship forms of the db viewer. If you look at the sonar properties it should list it if its there.

Looking at the form we'll have to add the actually sweeping gear at some point but you can see that by adding the platform and pressing the MCM equipment button on the right side unit Status display.

Thank you, Mike. I had not tried much with mine-sweeping and now see the MCM button when using a "real" mine-hunter (for MCM Avenger I see all the mine-hunting gear in the db I guess). This button is not present for the Bainbridge so I was confused as to where any information regarding mine-searching capability is in the db viewer. I cannot find it so that got me confused. With no mine-detecting sonar on board and the RMS device not (?) on board, can I sweep with that vessel successfully?

Thank you,

M

The Bainbridge and several other Burke's can host the AN/WLD 1 (V)1 Remote Minehunting System (RMS) in its boat dock. If you look at the name of the vessel in the platform viewer it is noted. Hope this helps.

Thank you Mike, I finally figured it out with your help. For the Bainbridge example, if no RMS present no mine-sweeping capability, not intended by the scen author. However I can add the RMS using the editor or implementing right from start in my own scenario (it is listed as a "submarine" (which makes sense, I just missed it first time), the Bainbridge - or better its RMS - can be used to clear mines now.
Bear with me.
Thanks,
Martin

...while testing it with an MCM sweeping mines I am just surprised that it takes severe damage during the process. Should not minehunters survive their attempts? As I have it here, mines detonate and damage the vessel. Am I making a mistake?

In most cases they should survive but can get hit and do take a bit of damage for just doing a mechanical sweep. What kind of damage are you seeing? Let me know the mine type too. Could be a big warhead.

Might be, I was trying to quickly do another test scen on this but it is really hard to lay the mines using the editor. Mainly its "Only 0 mines laid...". Why is it? Type of mine vs. water depth vs. size of area? Have to see tomorrow.

Hi Martin

Yeah certain mines can only be laid in certain water depths.

Have made some mods to the db viewer, the helicopter-towed mine sweep gear will now show up correctly, etc.

Thanks guys! [8D]
