Unidentified vessels ID given away in the log.

Post by zacklaws »

Never noticed this before, but whilst firing on a hostile vessel that has not been identified as to the type etc, it is given away in the log file as to what you are firing at, or am I missing something.

Throughout the game's development we've been repeatedly faced with the choice of whether to provide something (an option, an ability, a look under the hood, anything) to the player and trust him to not use it as a cheat, or hold it back because most players can't help themselves.

Being the optimists that we are, we trust the player.

Is it not a risk to take some fun away while a player who is unwilling to cheat tries to erase all his tactical thoughts from his mind that the message log has already inserted in his brain?

I shoot an unidentified but hostile contact, of course I also check the message log, part of my duties as commander, and I see "Oh! A SKR-something-frigate!". A millisecond later I am trying to forget that information because I know its only there because of a design decision and I try hard NOT to think about what that info about type of vessel means for my operation. Impossible!
Why not stick with the temporary nominator, in OPs example "FF#13". I might not see all implications of my idea, anyway...

Go to the message log preferences and have the weapon endgame message type not appear on the message log. Problem solved.

I think MartinB makes a very good point and it would be nice (maybe in the distant, distant future of CMANO) if a player could observe the outcome of an endgame calculation without getting TMI.

Any design philosophy predicated on "trusting" the player will go out the window if/when multiplayer is ever implemented [:D].

That said I cast my vote to trusting the player... and if you cannot trust those you play against, perhaps you should not play against them.

Today I turned off the Weapon endgame messages in the log preferences, I was suprised to see that they were still being displayed. Even double checked to confirm I'd turned them off.

I know in the past it has worked, unless its a bug in the new upgrade as that is the only alteration that I have made. I'll check later.
