My Mapping Attempt

Post by MikeAP »

I'm not as artistic as Nick69, but I decided to give it a shot.

Here is my 'real world' rendition of Red Storm 2 (Tutorial Map). I used area-specific textures with Photoshop to re-create our favorite mission map.

That's an interesting look as well.

Can't wait to see the finished product.

I kinda like that...good job... next pic throw some units on it to see how it looks with the units.

Big lesson learned here...

Must do elevation depiction before adding terrain (tree's, rivers, farms, etc) It is much easier to work when you have a good understanding of elevation when applying the extras.

Looks fantastic. I hoping at some point someone makes a scenario using a topo map..however love your work mate. Well done. I am finding it hard to see where the elevation rises are though.

Updated with new elevation indication. I removed the tree's and fields around elevation so that players can more easily identify elevation changes. It is still hard to really spot noticeable elevation changes - there's several elevations on this map, 5 in total.

I really like the colours and textures but the elevations look wrong somehow, it looks they're going down as opposed to up.

I'd lighten it all up..then use dark Green outlines to the elevation change..getting darker each rise..the light outline seems odd and detracts from the beauty of the map..plus zoomed out it looks like th elevation is inset instead of the other way round..try different shades of green for the out line..but first just lighten up each terrain elevation..to make sure that even the highest elevation the dark green out line is actually darker than the terrain.

Doing elevation changes is a pain..even worse when a game has LOADS of different elevation hexes..trying to get a decent spread of colour and shades is very hard.

I'll check that out.

I used feathering for the elevation changes. I'm messing with using just a regular brush and it looks much more defined now.

Updated with more/better shading for elevation. It might be a bit much, but it is noticable now.

Also - the farmlands were getting in the way of things. I removed all farmlands from elevation levels 2 and above.

Best one so far mate!

Try it without the elevation light\dark shading..I see you made one side lighter o make it look like light was shining on it creating a shadowy side, but I'm not sure if this works well and is really needed..I'd just go for the dark shaded side all the way around. If you get what i mean.
