do you have them set to not retire - remain on station not retirement allowed (retirement allowed means retire)? Do you have the support fleet following a fleet that is retiring? are their enemy TF's near by?

A few points may help. Essentially, you're learning how to get the units to do what you want them to do. Thus:

* The Remain/Retire control means "Stay" or "Come back". The Patrol settings are for patrolling out of given Home port. Patrols, especially for subs, can be a surprisingly far distance from the designated Home port.

* Basic Cargo/Tanker run (Retire): Dock TF if you can, it's helpful. Click Load. It will load as much as it can. The UI shows on the TF screen when Loading is completed. Set the Destination with Retire. Set for 'Unload', unless you don't want to (Supprt TFs are like this frequently, you want them to keep their cargo, in which case, select 'Do not Unload'). It will auto-undock, proceed to its Destination & Unload (autoDocking if it can), then return to the designated Home port. NOTE: "CS" convoys (in the manual) act like this, except they do it continuously - thus, 'CS'. 'AutoConvoy' is a pretty straightforward mechanism with a separate UI for managing it.

* You patrol by setting a Home port and Patrol Zones. There is no Destination to set with the buttons. I set most of my non-sub patrols to Minimal Refuel.

* Waypoints let you alter courses at three successive points - useful for avoiding the enemy & other, directed courses you want the TF to take.

Hope it helps.

If you have set a surface TF to follow another and want it to remain with the TF it is following then do not set a reaction range.

What I´m missing is the combination of patrol and waypoints. I want to send my subs into the patrol area, but often the direct way crosses some chokepoints I want to specifically avoid. As of now I need to send them to a destination on sea, use the waypoints option, and then check the TF after they have passed the last waypoint. Quite annoying ...

Combining these options would really be helpful!

Any questions you have, ask them here and you'll save a ton of time and frustration. The forum is the REAL manual. The other has indispensable information, but it's out of date and incomplete. You have literally millions of hours of experimentation and game time here and a very helpful group of people to guide you along.

Ask away.

Also use the Sardaukar Newbie AAR and other guides for various elements of the game that are stickied on the main page and in the war room. They will give you all of the most pertinent info.

Welcome and enjoy the addiction!

Subs are really fiddly, but if you leave them without this kind of guidance, it can result in heavy losses and a lack of contacts with the enemy. In some cases I change sub patrols EVERY turn. In others certain subs patrol for weeks without being altered.

Waypoints and patrol zones are mutually exclusive as you have found out but you do not need to do what you are attempting. Although a sub may be spotted on the way the chances of an attack are small the chances of a successful attack are minimal. Also Routing contols and Threat tolerance controls have little effect on subs

What you do need to do once the sub reaches its patrol zone is keep check on reports that it is spotted or has attack and move the zone. Moving when spotted is more important.

yep stick with it. Obvert is right, the manual is the forum lol! I've asked many questions, from interface ones like your's to grander strategic ones. There's a lot of great discussion and advice

There is also a wiki available at http://witp-ae.wikia.com/wiki/War_in_the_Pacific:_Admiral%27s_Edition_Wiki. It's unfortunately not kept as up-to-date as would be nice, but it does have some links back to very useful threads that are hard to find if you don't even know they exist!

just wanted to again say thanks guys for quick responses. yesterday I was determined to finish my newbie Operation Buccaneer attempt.

well scn was on easy and I got Tojo mad as hell at me at the end. he even dropped the kitchen sink on me at Port Blair! was a blast if I don't say so myself[:)]

my land force was givin back more than it was takin. not bad for a first timer! ohhh but did my naval forces get creamed.........ughhhhh......

getting the hand of the interface little by little and working on all the supply/logistics concept. found out this is the meat and potatoes of winning I think.

still need a manual of any kind in my lap. hate goin in and out of desk top to pdf[8|]

been reading the threads learning but my problem is straying off my topic of need and branching out to all the other good stuff....discipline ain't my favorite thing[X(]

again thanks and having fun getting Tojo peod to say the least Churchill[:D]

dks,

IIRC, the paper manual doesn't have all the information that is in the .pdf.

I haven't looked at either in ages, but I seem to recall that the paper manual is somewhat abbreviated.
