[FIXED 1.03] AS-4 Kitchen missile behaviour

Post by CV32 »

Observed something odd during the scenario 'Duelists'.

AS-4 Kitchen missiles launched from Tu-22M Backfires that did not acquire a target or missed their target during their terminal dive attack were climbing to altitude again, and then turning to re-acquire and re-attack. Some missiles did this multiple times while searching for a target.

(Challenging scenario btw. Any time a Royal Navy carrier group is found deep in the Norwegian Sea, without land based air support, and Norway presumably lost in its entirety, facing the brunt of both a Soviet SAG and Soviet Naval Aviation alone ... well, its not likely to be a good day.)

Several missiles seem to do this when not hitting something. SUBROC, for example (where the nuclear depth charge isn't working).

I noticed this too with the "Siren", but also that if it missed its target, not only would it start doing 360's in the target area till it found a target, but I could also plot a course for it as if it was a vessel or aircraft to another target if its original target was destroyed.

This also works for air launched torpedoes. The developers have stated that they assume the player would not use this steering option when he knows a weapon can not be steered in real life.

Did we claim we're not going to fix it?

Being able to drive missiles that don't have the capability is a bug however in 99% of cases its impact on gameplay is low because the player has to choose to do it. So we'll address it when we get there and in the meantime just expect players to do what they want and they generally do[:)]

Missiles re -ttacking when they shouldn't is a problem though and does have a higher priority.

Sure you did. However its up to us to see through the needling and fix the root problem. Will do.

Thanks!

Sorry, I don't want to start an argument about this, but I didn't claim you were not going to fix the problem.

The guys behind Command have seen more than a few virtual As-4 Kitchens in the air over the years, so I am sure they will address this one. I have to say it added a little more terror than usual in a Backfire raid, and was neat to watch.
