How to control speed, altitude and course

Post by spookyer »

Hi all

I am trying to adjust the speed and depth of a sub as it proceeds past waypoints along a plotted course. Setting the course is straight forward but how do I control the speed and depth at certain waypoints along the course? When I change speed or depth even when I have a particular waypoint selected it applies it straight away to the sub. I want it to apply as it reaches the nominated waypoint.

It has been many many years since I played Harpoon but I am sure you could easily set a course and specify speed and depth along the course using wappoints in Harpoon.

I am sure I am just missing something as this is basic funtionality. I did read the relevant sections of the manual regarding setting course and speed etc but it doesn't mention this.

Appreciate any help.

Hi,

I couldn't find any way of doing it either, and, as you say .. this is basic functionality, and I'm more than a little mystified as to why it has been omitted from the game. [&:]

I hope it's something that will be resolved/added soonish, as I cannot comprehend how one can realistically plot a course, with waypoints, .. and not be able to adjust speed/height/depth etc. per waypoint. [&:]

Cheers
Tom

There isn't a way to give a waypoint a speed and alt order.

Click F2 to give general speed and alt/depth orders to a unit or group.

Way-point speed/depth/altitude is on my wishlist!

Huh? No waypoint orders? That really surprises me, I never thought this could NOT be in. I would like to add it to what hopefully these days you open up as a "wishlist" thread for us. Is it on the list for update anyhow?

Thanks Mike for getting back to me so quickly and to all the team for the hard work they have put in to this sim.

I must say however that the inability of Command to handle depth and speed commands linked to waypoints really astounds me. I think I was playing the game for less than a minute when I went to use this feature and was unable to work out how to do it. You have now confirmed that is can't do it.

I would have thought that 99% of the beta testers would have made an issue of this. I guess they didn't. There are 101 situations where this feature comes in handy for aircraft, subs and ships, it lets the player have better control without as much micromanaging. You can give orders up front and they get carried out. You don't have to watch progress of a unit continuously to make these correction at the appropriate time.

I know this is not Harpoon and it is probably better than Harpoon in almost every way but I have to say it:
EVEN HARPOON COULD DO THIS!

I hope this issue is address urgently in a patch or something. It is not my field of expertise but given the coding prowess that has been displayed by this team in building this sim I don't think it would present much of a challenge to implement.

It would be a good feature to add no doubt. However, having already invested a few hours in playing the game already [:'(] I think there are more pressing improvements that should be made first.

Hi Guys,

Hear you loud and clear. I think our thought was that most the choose manual control tend to plot over again and again and change their speeds and depths manually.

Will push this forward.

I think what we'd like to be able to do is set a plot with a series of waypoints and be able to control speed/sltitude, ROE, order attacks, etc at the waypoints that make up the full plot of the operation we're planning. Essentially we want to map out a full egress/regress plan using the full plot, its waypoints, and waypoint orders. Once a plot is made the AI takes over and completes what we plotted/ordered and we can turn our attentions to other parts of the battle.

Alternatively, for those that don't want to manage the details of setting up a full plot and all associated waypoint orders, they can use "Auto" attack or the mission editor and have the AI do all the plotting and associated orders. But, the AI scripting and player tailoring options are weak and need a lot of work at this point!

Bottom line, is I feel we don't have the ability to manually manage operations effectively nor is the AI up to doing it for us yet at this time.

The game is playable and enjoyable (if not frustrating in many ways) as is, but as I've said in some other threads, it ain't the "One" yet...but could be!

Curious what the "one" is...I might get that one too.

The "One" = The Perfect Naval Simulation :)

Something Harpoon wanted to be and tried so hard for two decades to be, but just couldn't be because of itself. What Jane's Fleet Command could have been, but didn't want to be.

Command wants to be, has the right people leading its project and support to be, and I predict will be...one day. Today just isn't that day.

I agree, and this is especially vital for the AI side in any scenarios. The mission AI simply doesn't manage to use effective mission profiles at this time, especially for air missions. This is something that can be worked around with micromanagement for the player side, but the AI side in a scenario doesn't have a human sitting there constantly fiddling with altitudes and speeds.

Honestly guys our design intent is to just build the game we always wanted.

I don't think there is much value in trashing other games that were developed 10+ years ago.

Hi Mike thanks for taking the feedback onboard about this issue.

Improvements like this will seriously improve the quality and playability of the game.

cheers

Quick question: will ROE options for waypoint orders be added as well?

I love that Mr Burns pic [:D]

I cannot answer either for or against this ATM, but we'll see what we can do.

EMCON/ROE/hold fire or not per waypoint would be extremely useful! Pleaaaaasse :) :)
