DB request--Confirm Max Rnage of Sea Wolf missiles

Post by ExMachina »

In Sea of Fire the block 1 Sea Wolf missile used by the UK have a max range in the DB of 6nm and seem to engage the Argentine A4s at just over 5nm

That is quite a bit further than the ~2.5-3.5nm max range reported by internet sources:

http://www.navweaps.com/Weapons/WMBR_Sea_Wolf.htm
http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/miss ... a_wolf.htm

Can someone please confirm that 6mn is actually a realistic range for the block 1 Sea Wolf? Seems a bit far by the standards of the day and is more in line with the reported range of the 2005 Block 2-s (http://www.deagel.com/Surface-to-Air-Mi ... 19003.aspx)

At 5nm max engagement range, they consistently chew through 4 out of 6 of the A4s in this scenario regardless of attack plan.

Thanks

The range you see is as a point defence system against a high speed closing target - the engagement here takes place at the range quoted on the net. But your A4's are not high speed, so the engagement happens further away from the firing unit - the ranges you are seeing. Your sources quote max effective - this is not max range. It is the max effective range against what it was designed to shoot down - supersonic targets. Your A4's are not supersonic.

IMO the modelling is spot on.

So the only difference between the Blk 1 and Blk 2 Sea WOlf missiles is the seeker (75% vs 95%)?

This video of a 2008 Sea Wolf training exercise you can hear the weapons operators say "target at five miles. target at two and a half miles. target in range."

Doctrine, I am sure if the target was your A-4's then the ranges would be different.

I am sure the real problem is the altitude you are at. The lowest you can go is 50 metres - the reality is they went a lot lower than that.

Probably. Would love to be able to go lower.

FWIW, I can get a more realistic outcome (barring the complete Sea Wolf systems meltdown of history) by simply playing in editor mode and preventing the Brit from firing more Sea Wolf missiles than it's launchers can hold [;)]
