It’s been awhile; let me catch you up.

I’m playing Japan in Reluctant Admiral against Kevin. When we left the action about 5 weeks ago in game time and about 8 weeks ago (seems longer than that) in real time, battles were being fought on Adak in the Aleutians and in Java east of Soerabaja, while the front in China had become fairly stagnant.

Adak – On 22 May 42 CA Chokai, heading west from a raid near Dutch Harbor, was sunk by aircraft from Adak. CL Agano sustained damage in the same attack, but was able to make port for repairs. [I’ve got to remember to use waypoints; should have moved well north of Adak.] Due to the number of aircraft and aviation support the Americans have assembled at Adak, it would require a substantial operation to rescue the 2nd China Division on Adak, so further resupply efforts were suspended in early June. On 13 Jun 42, after being out of supply for 10 days, with disruption in the 90’s due to constant air attack, the remaining defenders succumbed to an overwhelming deliberate attack (201:1) and were destroyed.

Java – On 23 May 42 Probolinggo was abandoned by the British/Dutch defenders on Java and quickly captured by the Japanese, with resources undamaged. Loemadjang was also occupied. When it was determined that Bandjoewangi on the tip of the peninsula was lightly defended, the 56th Division was dispatched from Soerabaja to take it. This was accomplished on 1 Jun 42, leaving the remaining Allied troops (about 33 units) isolated in the tropical mountain between the 3 named bases. Because the stacking limit here is only 25,000 men, the major divisions were withdrawn to Singapore to train for Burma. Additional artillery was brought in and continuous bombardment with occasional attacks began to wear down and destroy the Allied units. But, as of 29 Jun 42, 18 Allied units survive, though fatigued, with low morale, and no supplies. Only the x3 terrain and my unwillingness to cripple my own units with a shock attack have allowed them to remain. The 5th, 18th, 38th, and Imperial Guard Divisions have returned to Singapore, leaving the mop-up operation to 1 Kure Assault Division, 24 Infantry Regiment, a brigade of 56th Division, and the artillery.

Midway – A rehearsal for things to come: On 22 Jun 42, after a heavy cruiser bombardment, American troops began landing on Midway Island, which the Japanese had captured during the first 2 weeks of the war. At least 7 heavy cruisers and 3 or 4 aircraft carriers participated in preparing for the landing. The first shock attack (22 Jun 42) reduced our defensive forts from 4 to 3; a second shock attack the following day reduced them to 2. More CA bombardments and a major CV airstrike paved the way for the final assault on 26 Jun 42, recapturing the base for the Allies. No American divisions participated in this operation. The Vals on the island flew search missions, but never tried to attack the Allied transports or any other ship. Meanwhile, on 25 Jun 42 we captured Baker Island from a port unit, and on 28 Jun 42 landed troops on an undefended Ndeni island.

China – Although the front has largely stabilized once the Chinese retreated to defensible terrain, we continue to move units around probing for an opening. An attempt to capture Pingsiang was canceled because once overstacked for the attack it was impossible to supply it. Those troops have moved SW for another probing attack yet to occur near Kukong. An offensive operation from 24 – 28 May 42 captured Nanning, but bogged down east of that base. Air attacks on Liuchow (clear terrain) have diminished the number of Warhawk fighthers defending, but Japanese bombers have been sporadic in flying their missions. 4th Air Division has been dispatched from the north, by rail to Shanghai, then ship to Canton to provide much needed aviation support.

Burma – We control Moulmein; the British/Indians/Burmese control the rest. On 1 Jun 42 a British CV (or 2) west of Rangoon attacked a surface force sent to intercept transports sighted in the area. BB Ise and CL Jintsu were sunk; CA Kumano limped back to Mergui with major damage (87 flotation damage when it arrived). It will be stuck there until at least November before enough major damage can be fixed to allow it to move to Singapore. There is a Sentai of Oscars at Port Blair, but I failed to put them on LRCAP over my surface force (until too late). On 3 Jun 42, 4 British battleships bombarded Moulmein damaging some Betties and Nells stationed there, while Betties at Tavoy failed to fly against these ships. On 6 Jun 42 a lone British CL (Colombo) sailing south (looking for Kumano?) was met west of Phuket by Admiral Tanaka and 3 battleships; it’s not reported sunk, but nevertheless it’s in bad shape. On 11 Jun 42 3 British destroyers bombard Moulmein (no damage) and are intercepted by Tanaka the next day. Two of the DD’s were sunk, but Nagato sustained enough damage that repairs in Singapore are necessary (it will be out of action for several months). The lone surviving British DD bombarded Port Blair on 14 Jun 42, then is intercepted and sunk by CA Nachi TF between Port Blair and Victoria Point on 15 Jun 42. Betties and Nells stationed at Tavoy and Bangkok attacked Rangoon port on 19 and 20 Jun 42, sinking 7 transports. By 23 Jun 42 the fighters defending Rangoon stopped flying.

Andaman Sea / Burma

5 Div is marching north from Tavoy to Moulmein, where it will join 33 Div and other units already at Moulmein to force a river crossing to the NE. This will occur in conjunction with an assault landing at Pegu (LCU at Sabang and Singapore waiting to load transports). Land-based bombers at Tavoy, Bangkok, and Rahaeng (now level 4) begin to prepare the battlefield. Oscars sweeping Pegu encounter a larger force of Hurricanes operating out of Rangoon. On 13 Jul, fighter escorts at Tavoy fail to fly with the Betties and Nells, resulting in 15 being shot down for minimal damage on the ground. Air HQ’s are enroute to Bangkok (3rd Air Army) and Rahaeng (3rd Air Division), while a third is already at Tavoy (22nd Air Flotilla). Carriers are enroute; CarDiv2 (Nagumo, Hiryu & Soryu) near Babeldaob, CarDiv3 (Yamaguchi, Shokaku & Zuikaku) just departed Yokohama, and CarDiv4 (Junyo & Hiyo) near Davao; all headed for Singapore with additional battleships. CarDiv1 (Akagi and Kaga) is in refit at Yokohama for another 2 to 3 weeks.

Aleutian Islands

On 7 and 8 Jul BB Warspite bombarded Amchitka. On 10 Jul RO-64 found a very large transport TF at Adak and took 6 DC hits; destination unknown. Nishimura’s cruiser TF moved to a position 9 hexes north for a high speed run into Adak should more intel on the transport TF develop. CA Kako took a bomb hit from a Hudson out of Adak, but sustained no damage. Nishimura retired to Amchitka on 12 Jul as no clear target was identified at Adak. On 13 Jul Nishimura made a high speed run at an ASW TF operating NE of Adak, but failed to engage and retired to Attu, with most ships sustaining a week’s worth of damage due to the speed (damage would repair quicker at Hakodate, but that trip would require a week round trip and fuel).

R&D

On 20 Jul, R&D on the A6M5 Zero reaches 30/0 at both Gifu and Maebashi and is 33% complete. With over 500 Ha-35 engines in the inventory, R&D will be 100% in less than 20 days, moving availability up from 1 Oct 42 to 1 Sep 42. Likewise, the Sen Baku is at 20/0 with 76% completion on R&D. As it also uses the Ha-35 engine, R&D will be 100% in about 12 days, moving availability up a month, as long as I make sure the engine inventory stays over 500. There is a possibility that one or both of these aircraft could be available sometime in August, but I’m not counting on it.

CA Takao, CL Naka, and a DD are sunk. The Warspite was hit hard enough that it detached, but I assume not hard enough to sink (although 4 torpedoes could do it). In any event Warspite should be out of action for some time. CV’s Akagi and Kaga and BB Yamashiro will complete upgrades & repairs in a few days at Yokohama and will be dispatched to Paramushiro for action in the Aleutians.


Burma

Where to from here? And yes, I realize I’m wa-a-ay behind the timeline of the real WW2 invasion of Burma. But, since RL stalled out in 1942 and stayed that way until 1944, what difference does a few months make?

Situation (friendly forces) – 4, 18, and 38 Div at Pegu; 5 and 33 Div moving to Pegu from the SE; 56 Div arriving by sea at Pegu on 2 Aug; plus assorted tank regiments and artillery. All Japanese troops suffer fatigue (~30%) and some mild disruption (~10%), but are otherwise at full strength and well supplied.

Situation (enemy forces) – 17 Indian Div at Rangoon probably not combat effective after the 30 Jul battle at Pegu; 39 Indian Div (renamed from 1 Burma Div?) now at Rangoon in bad shape after 1 Aug battle at Pegu; 3 Indian brigades at Rangoon wrecked after 31 Jul – 1 Aug battles at Pegu; other major forces unknown. Allied forces should be well supplied at Rangoon, but likely suffer from inexperience and low morale. The supply situation in the northern bases will deteriorate after Rangoon is isolated.

Near term plan – clear Pegu and advance on Rangoon with 4 divisions and artillery, while 2 divisions and tanks move to take Prome, Bassein, Toungoo, Magwe, Meiktila, Mandalay, and Taung Gyi. Two parachute regiments at Moulmein are prepped for Magwe and Meiktila.

This attack showed the defense based on 17 and 39 Indian Divisions, both at slightly over half strength after fighting at Pegu. With fatigue and disruption in some Japanese units at Rangoon over 60%, bombardment attacks were conducted on 7 and 8 Aug 42 to allow some rest and gain time for the units enveloping Rangoon to the north (see below).

18 and 56 Divisions moved NW from Pegu to cut the main road and rail line from Rangoon to Prome on 9 Aug 42. 18 Div turned southwest to join the battle in Rangoon, while 56 Div split into 3 brigades and moved toward Prome and Bassein, effectively isolating Rangoon when captured. 2 Recon Rgt will lead into undefended Prome.

The naval bombardments of Rangoon shown above prompted the British fighter force stationed there to relocate inland to Bassein and fly LRCAP missions. After some Army bombing missions on 6 Aug 42 went unescorted by Army fighters, the Zeroes aboard Shokaku, Zuikaku, Junyo, Hiyo and Zuiho swept both Bassein and Rangoon on 7 Aug 42 and downed 7 Hurricanes, while Army Nicks from Tavoy got 3 more, with no losses on our side.

Both good points. To the first, oil will be available when Magwe is captured (within days). To the second, he will likely bomb both Rangoon and Magwe, but not right now; my Oscars and Zeroes can easily CAP against Blenheims; when he gets better bombers then I'll have a problem. I will be interested to see how soon he tries strategic bombing. I've been doing some against him in China (our house rules have no restrictions), so it may start soon. You're both right, though, fixing the refinery is a huge waste of limited supply; thanks for the input.

An Allied TF lead by BB Colorado bombards Attu on 16 Aug, followed by BB North Carolina on 17 Aug. I’m beginning to think this may be his major axis of advance, as there is little activity in the Solomons (Noumea is defended by 1 unit); the Port Moresby area is at a stalemate until someone brings in many more troops.
