Canary Cage Mystery

Post by GBOATZ »

Been playing Canary Cage the past few days and just as I am approaching the landing zone my ships suddenly just start blowing up! I have 3 helos in front of group Alfa and an Orion overhead yet suddenly my ships are shooting at something unseen and two of my frigates just seem to get destroyed! Mines perhaps? Whatever, I did a full 180 degree turn and ended the game as I have been kicking (_[_) the past few days but this is starting to get quite frustrating. More, the three bases I am 'blessed' with have very few munitions, yet all the enemies seem to have all they want! I didn't want to use the option to have unlimited weapons and loadouts but apparently this must be the way to go as I have no attack planes whatever! Wondering if anyone else has played this scenario? Maybe its a "no win" scenario? (Sigh)

Probably one of the subs got you. CC is winnable it took me a few tries though. Found that taking out the air bases is a must, then use your subs to take care of the surface group, and used the CV group and the harpoon loaded planes to take out the missile boats. Plus I killed a lot of whales! Sorry Greenpeace. [:'(]

My losses were horrible, all my Harriers were gone, one destroyer, and two subs, also lost a few P3's and a tanker. But I took the side doctrine as whatever it takes to get the group on shore. You dont take a penalty for losses so long as you dont lose any amphibious ships in the process.

If you think CC is tough, try Brass Drum. I ran out of AMRAMMs now I cant load out my ground pounders. [:o]

Yeah, I killed 3 whales also and felt awful about that! LOL Problem is that I tend to jump on any goblin that gets near my carrier with my helos. In fact, one didn't move an inch until he got one of my Perry's! I guess gone are the times in Old Harpoon where I could build my own formation with lots of Vikings on the perimeter, helos inside and a few frigates for early warning for subs. I think I'll replay the scenario from scratch and this time will concentrate more on my ammo stores and plane loadouts. And I'll try and "save the whales!" LOL

Actually you can still do whatever formation you want... In fact the formation editor is much more powerful and flexible than the one in Harpoon, you can use the P-3 in front of the ships, detach a frigate as an ASW look out and much more.... It's true that the formation editor won't win any prize as user friendly but I wouldn't change it.... the key is to use reference point relative or fixed to the ship or formation you want to protect...

Yes we have discussed in another thread the loss of whales we were thinking of using the oil for lamps. [;)]

Hmm.. it seems there is indeed a far steeper learning curve involved here and I have to stop thinking so much as a "harpooner" and concentrate more on all the ramifications of this game. And you're right Blas De Lezo, I completely missed the reference to doing any recce. I guess I just got right into setting up an offense/defense and start shooting! Once the supreme "micro-manager" in harpoon who rarely lost a plane or ship, it appears I've been humbled and gots lots of 'thinnin" to do!

I didnt take oyt the airfields - the Falcons were enough. A continuous tanker-supported CAP screen between Mocro coast and in front of Alfa does wonders - got most of the surface groups with low altitude flying F18 harpoons and Tramontana did the rest. I didnt encounter enemy subs though...?

Sorry, but until the Spanish marines are taking a cold beer in the beach-bar the misión is still running...

What did you use in your cap? The harriers from Rota and the carrier? And how far away did you put the tankers? Curious about this strategy as I lost almost all my harriers cuz I needed the hornets for harpoon and bombing missions.

There are plenty of CAP hornets...
I used the Rota Harriers only after the hornets took out most of the enemy a/c. I did use numerical superiority I.e. put 5 hornets in a flight group and order them around. Works better than assigning single aircraft.
