where to get info on weapons?

This is a great game, but it is rather mind-boggling with respect to weapons and their capabilities. Sure there is a lot of information in table form on each aircraft or ship. But where can noobs who have no idea on what an F22 is good for, or which ECW platform one should use for an attack mission find information on weapons and platforms that are geared towards a more-or-less novice? (yeah I know, a F22 is a stealth fighter, but you get the idea...).

I have found that for a specific platform or a specific weapon,in addition to the game database, Google is pretty useful, but in both cases, that is only AFTER one has decided to look into the details of something specific.The video AARs are also useful, as well as the manual, but I am thinking of something more integrated - maybe like a course on naval warfare for newbies.

BTW I looked on Amazon, and the Harpoon II Official Strategy Guide looks interesting, but it costs over 100 bucks! And there is little info on what the book contains.

I'm gradually working on the Soviet and Chinese weapons. In my next database image package, I'll include the .txt files to add to the weapon descriptions. A sample of an entry (for weapon_1481, the SS-N-12 SANDB0X) is below. I'm using mostly the web, although I also have access to Janes. OVERVIEW: The SS-N-12 SANDBOX (P-500 Bazalt) is a long-range, liquid-fuel turbojet-powered supersonic surface-to-surface anti-ship missile with an active radar. It has a 750-1000kg high explosive and possibly a 350 kt nuclear warhead.

DETAILS: Targets for the SS-N-12 were originally detected by Tu-95RT BEAR D aircraft. Beginning in 1979, ESM and radar equipped satellites also provided targeting data. The target information was then transmitted to either shore or ships, and targets allocated to the SS-N-12s. After launch, the missile received mid-course guidance by command links using aircraft, Ka-25 and Ka-27 helicopters or the launching platform. Possibly satellites could also provide updated mid-course targeting information. The SS-N-12 may also use a datalink between missiles launched in a salvo. In this reported mode, one missile would fly at between 16000-23000 feet and use its active radar to detect and transmit targeting information to other lower flying missiles in the salvo. In addition to its active radar homing, the SANDBOX also has an EECM packaged designed to jam the fire control system of a target warship.

NOTES: The SS-N-12 entered service in 1975 and used onboard the ECHO II and JULIETT SSGNs, the KIEV CHG and SLAVA CG.

Must be nice to have access to Janes since it costs several thousand $ to enroll, so I assume your access is on a professional basis? If so then I'm sure you probably have to be careful what you use?

I might be interested in helping with your project. I have access to a lot of unclassified and open source info from my 32 years in the Army, and also from my old Harpoon days I have a lot of info. Get with me via PM and we can discuss what you are looking for. I like your sample, I can definitely help with that. I'm probably more of use with land based systems though, like air defense and ground weapons.
