It just keeps getting better!

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

It just keeps getting better!

First, there was SPhack and MOBhack, then there was Jim Bello's SPobedit, then came paintshop pro, and the ability to view, create and modify LBM's...Then came Fred's shpedit and the ability to create and modify shp files...Now, with WAW MAP in its latest version, comes the ability to copy maps, or part of them, and paste them onto another map...Man, it just keeps getting better! I never dreamed that I'd have this much capability to create scenarios!

With WAW MAP's latest version, and one short email from Mr. Chlanda, I'm quickly creating a map series covering all of the battles around Bastogne. And because of the ability to copy and paste, they are interlinked, except for the Champs battle site, which was relatively isolated from the engagements east of Bastogne. I've currently finished a large map covering the engagements around Marvie, Mageret, Neffe, Bizory and Mont, another covering Marvie and the terrain south of Bastogne, and I'm presently working on two that will cover the battles around Longvilly and Noville (remember TF's Rose, DeSobry and O'Hara?), east of Mageret. And, they have been done using topo maps for that area, so they are accurate in their scale. It is really neat when, if you run out of room for the area that you want to cover, you can just copy a portion of one map, paste it into another, and continue. I think that it will make a great scenario series.

I don't know why, but I've had a heck of a time trying to do anything in WAWMAP. I did figure out how to make smaller maps out of bigger ones, but I know there are alot of additional powerful features that I could use.

Going by the text files that came with, I don't seem to be able to get anywhere. Is there anywhere else to learn this great program? Or anyone who would be interested in doing a step-by-step tutorial for my tutorial project?

Thanks!

I've gotta feed the little one right now, but I'll log back on later and help you out if you haven't already found your answer.

Don,

Here goes...

1. Go into SPWAW and save a blank map that is the size you want your new map to be.

2. Load WAW MAP

3. File: Set shp directory...Open shp files in SPWAW and load Ter04z0.shp

4. Click on LOAD WAW Map and open your map folder in SPWAW, then load the map that you saved; your map should be on-screen.

5. Find the upper left and lower right map coordinates of the piece of whatever SPWAW map that you want to copy.

6. Go to Load-copy to clipboard and input those coordinates, then hit copy.

7. Load your new blank map.

8. hit tools-paste from clipboard, and input the upper left coordinate on your new map where you want your copied portion of your other map to go, then paste (make sure these coordinates are even numbers).

9. Your pasted piece won't immediately show up. Browse your map a bit and let the program load the correct icons.

It is very simple once you get the hang of it. It's like Shpedit. It just takes a bit of time to get the correct steps down. But once you've learned, it opens up a whole new world. I never would have attempted to reproduce a village, for example, on another map. Now, its so simple, its almost a crime!

Good luck,

David Boutwell

David,
Since you are doing the Bastogne maps, Have you thought of coverting Talonsoft's Battle Ground Bulge scenarios for SPWAW?

Thanks David, I will copy and paste that to a text file and keep it. It did take a while to get the hang of ShpEd, and now I want to start using WAWED to edit units - it seems easier to do it there than in SPWAW.

Larry,

I don't have that game. I'm using Osprey Publications' "Order of Battle: The Ardennes Offensive" for the U.S. and Germans, as well as S.L.A. Marshall's "Bastogne: The First Eight Days". These resources are very detailed, and should be all that I need. If I need more, I've got access to an expert on that campaign, as well as some other secondary resources. If you have any detailed oob's from that games, I'd love to see them, though.

I know this has absolutely nothing to do with what your discussing. Dave, your scenerio, "Reducing the La Carillion Salient" was pretty decent. I enjoyed playing it, thank you.

Mech,

Thanks a lot! I made that scenario this Summer after SPWAW came out (while out on summer vacation and watching Bear in the Big Blue House with my then 15 month old daughter!). I had just bought the Armed Forces in Action series book titled "St Lo". It had an awesome map of the Le Carillon salient (very detailed info. on the German positions, just begging to be made into a scenario). Not including experience with previous versions of SP, I didn't know what the heck I was doing in the area of programming troop movements. So, if you play the AI on both sides, the darned American troops look like the Chinese swarming a hill in Korea! They are really bunched up unrealistically, as far as tactics are concerned. I need to go back and fix that scenario by adding waypoints and objeectives for the Amis. But, even with those problems, it is an action-packed little scrap, is it not?
