Oct. 31/42 update

Post by SqzMyLemon »

China:

The river assault against Kienko went fantastic. No negative supply modifier was applied. I failed to notice if it looked like the HQ bonus was applied or not. I'll look more closely at the combat report later. Of the five defending Chinese units one was destroyed and the remainder retreated west. Another 300 Chinese infantry squads alone were destroyed while Japanese losses were only 227 casualties. These particular Chinese troops have been defeated three times now and their combat effectiveness is negligible.

A different story in the rough terrain southwest of Chungking. Two and 1/3 Japanese divisions attacked five Chinese Corps and were bloodied. Raw Chinese AV was 1288 and was only adjusted down to 850 AV after the modifiers. Japanese disablements were high, over 250 squads. I'll have to recover while sending up reinforcements including artillery.

Another deliberate attack against the encircled Chinese force at position 22 (see previous map) destroyed one HQ unit. The addition of an armoured regiment seems to have added the punch needed to finally reduce this enemy position. Another armoured regiment is on the way to reinforce further.

Sub Ops:

Well, this sucks. E Hato was torpedoed and sunk near Nauru Island. That's the third dedicated ASW ship lost in as many days. Can't results in this game be anything other than extremes? First Japanese naval ASW is overpowered in stock, now it's just plain non-existent.

I might have heard a submarine sinking sound but had my volume too low to verify. If so, that means my air ASW might have bagged a submarine. I will have to rely on air to counter the enemy submarines since the navy has been completely neutered. I will be moving my best anti-submarine bomber units around the map to counter enemy submarine concentrations.

Production:

The A6M3a enters production. I will convert an existing A6M3 factory to A6M3a production. I'd like to keep all the R&D factories. I have a choice of switching the existing A6M2 factory to the A6M3a or one of my Nick factories. I see no point in keeping the A6M2 factory going even though it upgrades to the Sen Baku later. Is this aircraft even worth producing? The current size is 100(0) and will change to 0(70) if I convert it. So 70k supply will be wasted if I make this change. I'm kicking myself for once again expanding the A6M2 factory too much, but I anticipated more combat. At least I didn't over expand it like I did in my first AAR to the tune of 280!

The D4Y1 Judy and Ki-43-IIb Oscar will enter production starting in December as will the Kawasaki 60 engine. So the option to produce some Tony's will be available if I choose to build any of the early models.

Thoughts:

With Kienko captured, it's time to turn my attention to Chengtu. There were last reported 30 enemy units there, but will they stay is the question. I fear they will run for the hills and I may be too late to cut them off. Jocke isn't one to stay in bases. A few more easy battles against Chinese forces in the Central Plains, but then it's going to be a grind after that. I'm happy with my position, but wish I'd moved troops from Burma to assault Paoshan months ago. Fun times.

I'd say go ahead and change the A6M2 factory. Way to long to wait for the Sen Baku and the upgrade path back to the fighter line.

I agree, no Sen Baku for me!

Well...consider this:

Sen Baku - > A6M5b -> A6M5c -> A6M8

make your calculations.

If well invested, you can have the A6M8 by early 1943. And it's a great plane to be a japanese navy-carrier fighter.

About subs: Japan has to use them in a very smart way. Keep them away from any enemy detection. Then rush them in at full speed and saturate the area where his CV/BBs are coming. You have just 1 turn to fight, then you have to move away.
But if your DL is 0, you're gonna escape most of the enemy Attacks at night... obviously when mid 1943 arrives and the allied DDs get their extra ASW upgrade is basically over... but untill that time, you can do wonders!

I've done very well with subs against QBall..losses have been tremendous so far, but i think i've taken with me some 3/4 BBs, 3/4 CVEs and damaged many CVs so far

Doesn't the Sen Baku come in 2/44, or is it different in DBB?

Envious, but can't say the same. I flooded Makin and area with submarines when the invasion was inbound and achieved nothing, a lone DD sunk.

Spotted enemy CV's approaching New Caledonia, I lost two submarines and never launched a single torpedo.

Single patrolling submarines far from enemy air search and no hits on any TF's I run across if escorted. I've had little to no success if the Allied TF contains even one escort.

My very first game as Japan in a non-AAR game saw great success with Japanese submarines. In my two PBEM AAR'd games I have had zero success. I've tried everything, commanders, proper patrol routes and trying to maintain low DL's. Absolutely nothing is working. It's obviously me as I read success stories in all the other AAR's, why mine perform like crap I have no idea.

Yes. Now imagine to build some 6x30 A6M2 factories. Upgrade immediately to Sen Baku...intact!
With the Ha-35 bonus.... 12 R&D points/day since 1st jan 1942... how long does it take to get to the A6M8?

Never even heard mention of the A6M8 much before so never thought of even trying to get it. Have to be my next game perhaps. How can you set factories to R&D of the A6M2 when it's already in production at game start?

Or, more simply, get to the A6M5 as fast as you can and keep on R&Ding on the same line. With some heavy Investments you can get to the A6M8 very very early.

Mr.Kane, against me, managed to get the A6M8 in early 1943[X(]

Ah, well that I can do. I have four R&D factories on the A6M5 right now. Won't be early 43, but I'll look into what I can do to accelerate this airframe.

All good, but it doesn't change that Joseph won't be able to use those factories in this game to produce the A6M8 until after the Sen Baku arrives, at the least.

One difficult thing about the A6M8 and the Sam are the range settings. They need drop tanks just to get to 8 hex range. Still great, and I wouldn't trade the Sam for any longer range zero, but it puts a lot more fatigue on the pilots and planes, so you have to really watch what you're flying and how much.

Mr Kane sounds like a bit of a maestro. How do you find em, GJ? First rader and now this guy. He's also got what like 4-5 games going at once? (Or did at one point I think I saw).

When I send off the next turn the game will be on hiatus until next Tuesday. I'm going on a short trip to Phoenix. I told Jocke he might as well hang onto the turn until I return. The break may be longer if he's miffed about my comment in MrKane's AAR. [:D]

I just had an epiphany. I'm reinforcing failure by trying to hunt detected enemy submarines. I'm losing that battle and even if I find them I can't damage them most times, let alone destroy them. I will rely almost exclusively on air ASW to damage/sink Allied submarines, while I use my escorts to do just that, escort, and hopefully eat a fish protecting a tanker rather than current practice.

I thought when you switched from production to R&D, no matter if it was a direct upgrade, the factories became completely damaged?

With a new month I made some production changes.

I switched a number of R&D factories to the next model in the upgrade path, in particular the D4Y2 Judy and the Ki-43-IIIa. I screwed up big time switching the Ki-44-IIb R&D factories to the IIc some time ago, but now I realize I should have kept advancing the IIb because of the better gun value. I can't convert back without damaging the factories so I'm stuck waiting until February 43. Stupid!

I converted the A6M2 and A6M3 factories to the A6M3a and they will produce 70 and 24 planes respectively. I don't plan on producing any Tony's in the immediate future so I decided to convert the R&D Kawasaki Ha-60 engine to the Ha-43 instead. That now gives me five factories researching this power plant. Add to that the three R&D factories I have working on the Ha-45 it's clear I'm all about cranking out the Frank, George and Jack in 1943 and hopefully advancing the Ki-83 and Shinden as far forward as I can.

It never fails, you swear you're going to be on top of R&D yet often overlook things and waste HI, manpower and supply. Overall I'm happy with progress, but not quite the R&D guru yet. I think if I play Japan again, I will maximize research by coverting all R&D engine factories to only two engine types and leaving all other engines to arrive on their preset dates.

Hey again from the shadows Joseph. [:)]

The Ki-44-IIc is much better than IIb: same performance yeh but the c has armor rating of 1 instead of 0 and has 4 * 12,7mm HMGs where the b has just 2 ct HMGs and 2 40 mm caseless ammo wing cannons with an accuracy of 8(!!!!), hence the gun value which has nothing to do with how good the armament is in practice. Even against bombers the b model performs identically to a.
