Cafe Mocha Latte filled Styrofoam cut by a soft, male manicured hand ? No. A calloused hand slow smoking a freshly butchered hog in a stone and mud smokehouse for days on end? Yes. One talent a novelty, the other a means of survival. I've cast my lot already.

I am with you on that one.

For my fifth choice I submit a singer/songwriter who manages to capture both light and the dark.

Paul Simon - Rene and Georgette Magritte With Their Dog After The War

A country folk song about a Veteran coming back an addict.

Pretty morbid but good.

Sam Stone - John Prine

Missouri_Rebel,

Thanks for that. Currently battling with my own addiction. Trying to give up my beloved pipe.

My sixth choice is ....

Red Army Choir - Midnight in Moscow

So onto 8/20. Early 80's new romantic and synth pop will always be my favourite period. There are so many contenders for the 2-3 maximum slots available.

This song though has remained near the top of my playlist continuously since it first graced my earbuds. Stonkingly brilliant, incredibly sad, its:

Soft Cell - Say Hello, Wave Goodbye

Saw by chance that Blutengel released an album in February. I previewed the album on itunes but apart from the opening track, I didn't think too much of it. Until I came across this one. Absolutely beautiful!!!!

Re classical - what shall we do with symphonys? It seems a bit unfair to be allowed a whole symphony when a pop song is circa 5 mins? Should we limit to movements?

If you do that, then Echos by Pink Floyd would count as 4 songs, as it clocks in at 20 minutes. This of course would be one my 20.

Right music lovers. How about we set out our all time top 20 toons.

Warspite1,

My apologies. I did not translate "toons" as "tunes or songs lasting no longer than five minutes." In future, I shall pay more attention when translating post-modern English into any intelligible language.

And Dangnabbit... Echoes by Pink Floyd was going to be one of my twenty...

No hard and fast rules - my view is a track is a track no matter how long. One of my choices is almost 18 minutes long.

The question re symphonys came about because I'm not sure if the movements within should count as one track or if we should be allowed to include the symphony itself?

Gut feel says it should be limited to movements but I'm happy to go with the flow.

Warspite1,

You may have a point there. Still, not planning to include any more symphonies.

My ninth selection ...

The Grateful Dead - Ripple
