Australia Resource Production?

Post by LargusMeans »

Hey

Doing the commonwealth setup, have 2U convoys all the way from Cape Naturaliste to Bay of Biscay. I have 2 idle factories in Manchester. Assign the Broken Hill resource, no problem, 1U convoy left on the route. Assign Newcastle, it shows no problem. Look at my unused convoys again, once again I have 2U all the way on the chain and both resources now have Melbourne listed. When I look at Melbourne it shows "254 of 1 idle" in the producing column. I have this saved and can send it to you.

There seems to be a general issue with the resource routing from Oz. It tried to implement my CW convoy template and was not able to route more than one resource across the Pacific to Canada. All resources would not find a valid factory in Toronto, but find one in Montreal (with the correct route). So it should not be about the path, but about the order of meeting the user constraints. Set Canadian factories/resources to idle does not help the case.

Seems related. It would also be helpful to expose a log of the automatic scheduling or give a more detailed reason why and where user imposed constraints cannot be met. All this is not so important for setup as you have no problem reaching full production there, but it might become serious in from 40+ if the Axis engages in a serious BotA.

A couple of things.....

I approached it differently and sent all Indian Resources to England and Aussie Resources to India. Same thing happened again. When I isolated the Newcastle resource to go to Melbourne instead of the Mt Isa resource, this seemed to allow everything to work with my new routes.

Secondly, some times routes are shown in the window as blue, sometimes as green and then when broken they appear as black? Is there any info that the color of the route shows up in that we should know about?

Reference for the colours is Players Manual Vol. 1, p233-234.

green - default routes
blue - override routes
black - computed routes (not mentioned)

I also learned that I should use default routes and not override routes by revisiting the section. Default routes respected at all times once set. Overrides are good for just this turn. Anything without a default or override will be picked up by the scheduling algorithm. At least that is my understanding rn.

Another thing to keep in mind is that if you are trying to set up all the convoys for the Commonwealth at the very beginning of the game, then the Commonwealth is not at war and will only be permitted to save 1 oil point!

So on the first turn other than the US and Japan which have to place convoys. Is it better to position CW convoys in port and deploy them once war is declared?

No, you should always set up your convoys where you need them. You can only sail one ship per naval move as a neutral MP! So it would take forever to sail CW convoys. Further they are quite strike target sitting amassed in a port ;) Halved AA and no air missions when you are surprised...

I think what Steve meant to say is that you should wait until after the compulsory DoW in Impulse 2, S/O 39. Or at least refine the saved oil settings after that point in time.

This may matter for preliminary production but we know automatically the CW will be at war when final production is done.

This is what I have learned in playing with the CW (or any MP) convoys/production.
When placing your convoys during setup you can open the production form. As you place the convoys work from closest resource outwards to the furthest away. After each convoy chain choose the idle resource and "produce" it. You will then have a choice of a factory. It doesn't matter which factory you choose, just choose one. click on calculate. The program will then auto link any resource along that convoy chain and it may not be the one you initially chose. example: if you run a convoy chain from India to UK through the Med with just 1 convoy in each sea zone and you chose PRODUCE and chose a factory in the UK and then click on claculate the program will grab the resource in Cyprus. That's okay with me anyway as it is closer.
Just place your convoys 1 at a time and recalculate with each resource. The program works great. Yes, you can only save 1 oil point if neutral.
You will get another chance to adjust your convoys during movement and then a final calculation during production.

Someone my correct me on this but the program does not auto update as you place convoys; you have to click on the recalculate button.

Take note on the production screen about the convoys not used. Check out the paths of each resource. If you do this and take your time you will understand how the software works.
Always place your convoys first before other naval so you can decide where to place your navy to best protect your convoys.
The two forms, Naval display and naval summary are your friends during setup of the CW and Japan navy.

My point was a minor one. I didn't want players trying to save a lot of oil points for the Commonwealth before the Commonwealth declared war on Germany. Tweaking which oil points are saved needs to be delayed until that happens. Until then it is best to just let them sit Idle.

Very nice.[&o][&o]

---

You can place convoys in sea areas during the Setup phase and moving them from port out to sea during the Naval Movement phase.

---

You can bring up the Production Planning form pretty much anytime you want (it isn't available during the Production phase and a couple of other phases near Production - I forget exactly which). During the end of turn phases, there are two Production Planning phases: Preliminary and Final. What happens between those two phase are all the Stay At Sea and Return To Base phases.

The purpose behind having two phases is so you can work out you routing of resource in the preliminary, and then decide about which units stay at sea. For instance, you may want to bring some unused convoys back to port. The second phase gives you an opportunity to simply OK your original plan, or perhaps tweak your routes if something nasty has happened at sea. For example, when returning units to base, naval interception combats can occur, which may wipe out some of your convoys.
