Quite embarassing when all you need to do is look at a decent WWII flight simulation to show the spacing is all wrong. Another movie down the drink because of the special effects department... [8|]

I had Gene watch it, he's ex-belly gunner B24, one thing they got right was the sound ... really loud all the time, and you never heard the hits, the holes just appeared ... and it happened really fast ... d___, that had to be scary ... tough SOB's to have done that ...

My Dad and I watched the movie Memphis Belle together before he passed away. He was a B-17 pilot in the Eighth, and liked the movie. He didn't get into ETO until Aug '44, and by then many the most desperate efforts were behind us. He flew in several of the "1000 plane raids" into the Ruhr and elsewhere.

I wonder what he would say about this movie. He could be rather sanguine about things like this, and end up saying something like, "well, they tried, but they missed the mark." I'm guessing he would appreciate the effort, and be a bit humbled by the attention.

Oddly, with Memphis Belle, the one scene I recall him saying was close to 100% accurate was a very large dance with tons of balloons dropping from the ceiling. I thought it was extraneous Hollywood drama, but he stated that is exactly what it was like - as if the movie was footage of one of the squadron dances. Go figure.

I do remember watching the TV show 12 O'clock high with him. During one episode he did get a bit animated as a pilot & co-pilot of a damaged aircraft were flipping switches and pulling levers. Dad hopped out of his chair and stated rather loudly and forcefully, "that stupid bastard just dumped his port fuel!"

In the memories of flight crews during and immediately following the events, the aircraft would likely seem closer together than they really were and even 30 fighters can seem like a 1000 to the lead crew. Successful film makers the world over try to reproduce the emotion the events inspired. This generally requires exaggeration...

In the memories of flight crews during and immediately following the events, the aircraft would likely seem closer together than they really were and even 30 fighters can seem like a 1000 to the lead crew. Successful film makers the world over try to reproduce the emotion the events inspired. This generally requires exaggeration...

Being a teacher of film I always try to show how exaggeration usually produces a less effective film. Moments of empty tension amidst flurries of action are what produce the feeling of being right there. Look at any good horror film and you'll notice that the truly scary parts are few, but the build up is long and drawn out. Exaggeration is the easy way out.

EDIT: Just watched it. Worse than I could have imagined. Looks more like a scene from The Empire Strikes Back than WW2.

I rather watch this one than 98% of the garbage coming out of hollywood...at least they are trying. They do have to earn money on a movie and if that means sidestepping historical accuracy and exaggerating stuff to make the movie thats fine by me. I rather they make WW2 movies hollywood style then none at all. Hopefully this one have small amounts of hollywood.

Keep in mind they will of course have the most "dramatic" scene in the trailer. So the rest of the movie might not be a wild!

obvert, I agree with you about the pacing of dramatic events and the impact on emotion. Too many dramatic events, particularly when compressed as many modern movies are, entertain but do not create much emotion. The highs and lows are lost in the frantic flow of events. To me, this is not the same as exaggeration in proximity or numbers prevalent in combat memories. For most of us, the shell exploded closer to us than it really did. The volume of fire was greater than it actually was, etc.

It just sucks when you know they can do it well. Band of Brothers and The Pacific are two great examples that aren't prefect but get the pace, feel and emotion without the over-dramatization to the point of silliness.

One story I wold love to see made into a decent film, or mini-series, is that of the coast watchers. No need to embellish drama there!

There is exaggeration (I call it artistic licence) which is fair enough if done properly, and then their is rank stupidity - making something totally and utterly unrealistic...
