scenarios and stuff

Post by Falcon1 »

Hello all, just wondering where to go for extra scenarios for the game? I saw in another thread that there was an updated version available for at least one scenario included in the game. Wouldn't want to miss out on stuff like that. I went to the Games Depot link provided here and saw that the latest scenario was uploaded in 2011. Is there somewhere else that the community goes for a consolidated list of downloads? Or are they spread all over?

Also wondering, is this pretty much the most active community forum or is there a different favored place?

Try Rugged Defense or see some links at the TOAW Beachhead http://thetoawbeachhead.wordpress.com/ or the Gefechtsstand :)

Falcon1,

Welcome to TOAW.

Rugged Defense is the best place to get scenarios for TOAW III. You can also install most of the COW scenarios but you need to convert them before use. To convert them, you need to load them into the TOAW III editor, save the scenario, and then you are ready to go.

The TOAW 1, TOAW II, WOTY, and COW 100 scenarios you will not be able to load into TOAW III.

In this case there are two things you can do. The first is to visit the Gamesquad forums. In the TOAW download section you will find more scenarios for TOAW III and COW. You will also find Several volumes of the Legacy Project. There are about 10 scenarios in each volume. These are TOAW I, TOAW II, WOTY, and COW 100 scenarios that have been converted to TOAW III. Be aware, however, that these are mechanical conversions and will contain conversion errors. They will almost always require work in the editor to get them to play as they should. Sometimes this is a 5 minute job. Sometimes, it will take you a month or more. You might like to check out the TOAW Scenario Catalogue. This is a work in progress and not yet complete. But see what you think.

As an alternative to the Leagcy Project, you can look for Martin Goliath's excellent TOAW converter program. This will convert any TOAW scenario into TOAW III. I don't have the link right now but you should be able to find it easy enough either on this forum (check the old posts) or on Gamesquad. Using Martin's program means that you only need to download form Rugged Defense the scenarios that you are interested in.

Since you are new to TOAW, I would not recommend playing around with the editor until you are more comfortable with how TOAW works. But certainly check out the editor when you are ready and play around with it. The sooner you get used to it the better.

Please feel free to ask any questions. There are a whole bunch of really helpful people here and they will always be able to help with any problems you might have.

Enjoy.

Best wishes,
Steve

There is also "The Wargamer's Scenario archive. Kinda short, compared to what's available, but easy to find. Just search "The Wargamer." Herr Oberst wrote a great article about TAOW that is still easy to find in The Wargamer.[:)]

PRUSSIAN TOM,

Last time I checked the Wargamer Depot was broken. I have been trying to get them to fix it. It has been a few months since I last checked so it might be fixed.

Best wishes,
Steve

It must be working as I was able to download the converter and a couple of scenario files.

So what about the scenarios included with the game? I notice most of them are labeled with a version prior to 3.4. Will these all work OK? I read in another thread that even 3.2 scenarios might not work right.

Yes and no. I would suggest to modify the AD and MRPB at some scenarios that are prior to 3.4.

As per Bob Cross the setting for the AD; MRPB should be 3.

As to guidelines, assuming the values are linear, then here would be the values for the setting, along with some values I've actually used for it:

Whole-week: 2 (Examples: Germany 1945 & Soviet Union 1941)
Half-week: 4 (Examples: CFNA, France 1944, The Next War 1979)
Full-day: 14 (Examples: Killer Angels 1863, Cambrai 1917, Kaiserschlacht 1918; Exception: Okinawa 1945)
Half-day: 28
6-hour: 56 (Example: Waterloo 1815, actually set to 40)

Okinawa is the exception to the rule due to the need to model the Jap cave defenses. It uses an AD of 50. And, at 40, Waterloo must have needed to be bloodier than normal WWII.

Supply might need to be updated/modified, too. Any scenario in particular you want to update/play for 3.4?

Falcon1,

This is why familiarity with the editor should be a high priority once you get used to the game. Don't rush it but don't put it off either.

I read in another thread that even 3.2 scenarios might not work right.

I'm wondering about this too. With the updates in v3.4 and the other unofficial updates that look good, I may try getting back to some TOAW gaming over the winter months. Btw, great article in The Wargamer, a good reminder.

If possible, it would be nice to have a repository in one place we can go to and download scenarios that have been verified to be compatible with the latest version, now v3.4.

I prefer ETO or Russian Front scenarios at the corps/army level with working Axis and Allied PO. Any recommendations for v3.4 that have already been converted and are running well?

Designers and Modders aren't going to make the effort without noting it. Therefore, scenarios tested or updated with 3.4 will say so in the Scenario Briefing. Whether or not they specify which 3.4 features to use is another matter.

In the manual, I read that you should make sure that the PO is enabled before playing a scenario against the AI. I notice that many scenarios, especially in the "Classic TOAW" folder, do not mention the PO at all in the description. What will happen if the PO isn't enabled? Does that mean the AI will just play like a total idiot? Are all these scenarios for PBEM only?

Probably. Shunwick has a nice scenario catalogue that details some of this info.

For a little more detail on the situation, the Programmed Opponent is just that, because the designer has to program it. This programming takes place when the designer assigns Objectives to formations in the scenario. The number of objectives assigned to each formation can range from 1-99. There is no handbook for this, and each scenario is designer specific, so every scenario is different. Even with minimal objectives assigned, some scenarios will play decently, and some with a multitude of objectives will still play like an idiot.

Also note that Elmer - the TOAW III KI - can handle certain situations better than others. His strength is the offensive, he is not so good at the defence. Delaying he can't really do good. Amphibious invasions is a no go. Elmer is more Zhukov, less Manstein, he likes it straight, bloody and relentless.

Falcon1,

All the scenarios in the Classic folder have PO set for both sides. The scenario catalogue is available at the Gamesquad Forums. It contains information on every scenario available for TOAW including whether or not the PO has been programmed.

I can't seem to log in to that site. Apparently I have logged in in the past, it knows my username and email, but I can't remember the password. When I try to reset it, it keeps telling me I got the question wrong, which is "What is the first word of the web site you are visiting". I tried game, gamesquad, forums, reinventing. Anyone know the trick to this security question? Or maybe post the catalog here?

Falcon1,

Not sure about the first name of the website. You seem to have tried everything I would have suggested.

I can help with the catalogue though. Click on link, click on file, click on download.

Scenario Catalogue 01122013

And the really nice thing about that download is that it does not contain any adverts, flashing lights, and other annoying things that you sometime get such as mediafire as a horrendous example.

Best wishes,
Steve
