December 29th

One of those turns that leaves you feeling better after a few hard turns.

DEI

Things start of well. Miller confirms that the Repulse is a goner. With Prince of Wales damaged, it's just crusiers in the DEI.

Then things get scary. Fuso, fleeing alone from yesterdays battle, stumbles on an American crusier task force. But even super-ship Boise can't dampen today! The Fuso eats a torpedo, hardly feels a scratch, and sails away without a by-your-leave to the Americans.

The Allies then stumble on Ise with a pair of destroyers limping back to Cam Rahn Bay, and sink one destroyer before withdrawing. A minor niggle compared to what happens next.

The Betties and Nells of Siagon make an appearance, torpedoing a few ships. A hoard of IJN crusiers are ready to sweep up tomorrow and sheild Ise and Fuso from harm.

To top it off, Singkawang is left alone again today, it will be operational by the new year.

Moves in the eastern DEI are underway.

Malaya

Singapore is swept. Nothing, not even a mouse.

I'll wait till Johore Bharu is Japanese before starting the air campaign so that the Nates can die as escorts while Oscars and Zeros sweep. IJA armour is a day or two away.

China

The 35th Division gets mauled as feared. On the bright side, it's now the perfect size to act as a garrison for newly capture Loyang! The small victories even in defeat! IJA units are repositioning to crush the Chinese on the open plains, and the move against Nanyang will be made in around four to five days.

Industry

The Home Island convoys are humming away. Resources are rising, and supply is stable at just over one million total in Japan proper. The majority of factories are repared, with only the biggest still completing repairs.

Aircraft pools are alright. Not great, but alright. I've little Zeros and Oscar Ic's, but the demand on them is highest. At present, I can endure some more fighting over Singapore.

With no Allied fighters operating in China or over Burma, it's a blessing - there's no demand for competitve fighters there and the Ida's and assorted trash can bomb away. I've even got Nates shooting up Chinese units.

Image
Retribution is sailing on a collision course for the massive force of British, Austrailian and American crusiers. It won't bring the Hyuga back, or the three crusiers, but it will make the diving off the shore of Sinkawang the best in the world.

That looks like a tough battle. I like the Hyuga. I'd be upset by that.

As an Allied player I would gladly pay 2-3 of ANY cruiser I start the game with for a good Japanese BB. Yes, even the Boise. If I can sink them early when they have the advantage I'm going to lunch on the surviving few when I have radar and full-war crew experience in the USN.

Low moonlight generally favors the Allies in the early-war in my experience, especially at close range. High moon favors the IJN.

I prefer low- to medium-moonlight as Japan. Low enough to close so the Allies can't escape, but high enough that I don't get TOO close so that your guns actually hit. If you noticed, the only good hits I landed on the CLs in our last turn were at 4k yards.

I live for these.

Divide the 35th ID and let it sit a while, garrisoning some cities while you await garrison units from your reinforcement queue ;).

+1

I was just going to post that!

Once you get Singkawang going his job will be a lot tougher, but you still have to worry once you go for Palembang. Those Brit CL in combination can put a damper on an invasion! Hopefully your next turn does remove a few of these.

DEI

The intercept works as planned. At least one British crusier is likely to sink, and there are a couple more licking wounds thanks to the IJN.

I have made almost no progress in the Eastern DEI, but that's soon to change with the transfer of a regiment from Indochina and the relocation of the Minadano forces.

Malaya

Allied air resistance over Malaya is broken. Scarce twenty fighters remain, down from eighty. It's been costly for both sides, but it was a price that needed to be paid. The siege of Singapore will start in a few days.

China

The campaign aganinst Yenan breaks through. There's now eleven Chinese units stuck in that hex, with the IJA ready to block off the road running out of the hex. I'll bomb the airfield so that it can double as the surface of the moon before forcing a river crossing and removing the threat from my flank.

Elsewhere, things are quiet.

January 1st to January 5th

Ugh.

China

The Chinese Air Force makes an appearance over Changsha, jumping a few units on the daily milk run. A sweep of Nates goes wrong, so the next turn Zeros are flown in and wipe the floor with the Chinese.

On the ground, things are progressing well.

DEI

I lose Ruyjo to a Dutch sub off Manado. Doesn't matter what I do, the subs get kills unmolsested. Mini-KB transited here to cover invasion, and now it's lost most of its strength.

The only upside is that the ship was still carrying Claudes. The pilot losses, however, will hurt.

I'm building up for Palambang. The troops are loaded and the covering fleets are sailing to Sumatra. Sinkawang is nearly ready to base Nells and Betties to cover, and sweeps of Palambang have shown no Allied resistance.

Malaya

Sinagpore is well supporessed, but Miller's converted the AVG to P39's. I'll be glad to destroy Allied airframes trapped that far forward.

Strategic Implications

So far, three crusiers, a battleship and a light carrier have been sacraficed for the DEI oil. This depresses me, being the worst losses I've incurred taking the DEI. On top of that, plenty smaller vessals are gone as well.

This concerns me. At this rate, with these average losses, I'll not see 43. Not much I can do about it, however. I can't seem to shake off the feeling about being bogged down in January 1942.

Check your pilot reserves. You will see a lot of the Ryujo pilots there, with a due date in about a month.

The forum swallowed half-an-hours work, so excuse the short post.

January 5th to January 22nd

The crux of this post is a carrier battle in the DEI.

I lose two carriers, Shokaku and Hiryu, to three American carriers. Kaga is in peril, as are the rest of the remaining IJN carriers. Singapore still holds, behind level four forts, and eight thousand Japanese perish in exchange for just over eight hundred British!

The Chinese front is stalled, except in a few areas, so I'm moving units around to hopefully create some new options for advances.

All in all, things are going poorly.

Do you have a combat report to post? That is an early CV battle for sure!

Has the kitchen sink arrived at Singapore yet?

Yes, nearly 1k AV advantage. My problem is some IJA units are still not recombined to divisional size, so they get slaughtered in attacks.

That said, the level 4 forts dont help much either.

Nice job on the allied fleet. That is going to set back his assaults at least a year I would guess.

3 USN CVs down hurts him bad, but you're down 2 decks as well... Good thing you got the Hermes and a couple CAs as consolation! [:D]

Only 1K advantage? How much does he have there? Did he send in the Brits and/or Indians that are on those convoys, or is it just the Aussies holding up the defense? In my experience, you need to shut down fort building at Singers as early as possible via daily massed air raids, which places a high priority on first accomplishing air superiority as well... and then you need every available unit there. I usually send 33rd Div and Imp Guards Div (are they only in Scen 2?) rather than going into Burma right away with those, and bring in the pieces of the 2nd Div that are in Japan/Philippines at the start. Burma can wait (a bit) and the PI can wait even longer. Singers can't.

FWIW, I also brought the 4th Div and two of the 50-something Divs out of Japan in my most recent sally into Singapore. As I said, everything.

Still, you're only in late January. All that moving of extra units made my capture of Singers sometime in mid-February, so you may still be ahead of me.

Did you save the injured?

You got some good ones there for sure. Curious though why your initial CAP was only 24 A6M2? What was your setting for the CAP? With all six there it seems like it should have been in the 50-70 range if not more. Especially since your initial strike only had 54 escorts.

Just a pity it cost me two fleet carriers. Still, omletes and eggs.

As of the present point in the game, Miller has:

5/14th Punjab Battalion
2nd Malay Battalion
2nd Gordons Battalion
22nd Australian Brigade
3rd Cavalry Regiment
11th Indian Division
SSVF Brigade
27th Australian Brigade
2/17 Dogra Battalion
1st Manchester Battalion
1st Mysore Battalion
2nd Loyal Battalion
1st Malay Battalion
9th Indian Division
3rd HK&S Light AA Regiment
110th RAF Base Force
224 Group RAF /1
Malaya Army
22nd Indian Mountain Gun Regiment
109th RAF Base Force
Malayan Air Wing
Singapore Fortress
III Indian Corps
1st HK&S Heavy AA Regiment
1st Indian Heavy AA Regiment
AHQ Far East
2nd HK&S Heavy AA Regiment
24th NZ Pioneer Coy
1st Hyderabad Battalion
109th RN Base Force
3rd Heavy AA Regiment
111th RAF Base Force
Singapore Base Force
1st ISF Base Force
112th RAF Base Force
223 Group RAF /1

For a total of 1023. IJA units ammount to 1328, down a bunch since there are plenty of trashed units. Southern Command is moving in in two turns to assist in the capture, with a hotshot fire-eater of a commander who has the reputation of going out at night to look for fights.

The forts being so high is unfortunate. By commiting the AVG so early, Miller basically forced me to wait till I could destroy fighter resistance over the base, which didn't really happen. By switching the AVG planes to Airacobra's, Miller prolonged the resistance. Now the situation is even worse, as the American carrier aircraft are being thrown in the fray as well!

The units needed to recombine the divisions are already making their way towards Malaya, so that solves that.

I keep worrying myself over Singapore not falling, I suppose I need to pinch myself and remember that it's only January!

You got some good ones there for sure. Curious though why your initial CAP was only 24 A6M2? What was your setting for the CAP? With all six there it seems like it should have been in the 50-70 range if not more. Especially since your initial strike only had 54 escorts.

Yes! Kaga made port last turn in decent condition considering the damage. She's a bit too close to the frontline for my liking, but she's under heavy air cover to deter any long-range air raids. The rest are a turn out of Cam Rhan, but with a few Dutch subs in the way, so they're routed around them.

The CAP problem was due to the fact that one or two Zero squadrons were set to sweep, and as a result didn't become involved in the battle. If I had double-checked before the turn ended, I'd probably not have fared as badly. Lesson well learned.

January 23rd to January 24th

Malaya

Distaster over Singapore. A mixture of IJA and IJN bombers get all muddled up and fly bit-by-bit into the awaiting Allied deathtrap over Singapore. USN carrier pilots and AVG volunteers get a turkey shoot. Bad day for the Japanese, who are going to take a day to rest, refit the aircraft and go in the following day to seriously attrition the Allied air force.

DEI

A few scattered sweeps do well against Dutch and British aircraft, but it doesn't make up for the poor showing over Malaya.

In the eastern DEI, units are moving to secure Timor, and though Ambon proves a stubborn redoubt for the regiment tasked to secure it, things seem to be going well here. Makassar is next on the list.

Dutch subs swarm around Sinkawang, but I've some crack ASW air units in the region, so here's hoping we can nail a few!

China

Units are pulling back to get a few days rest, awaiting a burst of newly created units before undertaking on a new offensive. I'm concerned that Miller may have locked this theater down very well - I have all my units stuck where the frontline is static, and where the situation is fluid, there are scarce enough units to advance.

Central Pacific

A few weeks of flying supplies on to Wake ends in disaster. 800 Japanese dead, no gains on the island. I'll need to sort this, there are some elite troops that are wrecked as a result of my mismanagement.

Phillipines

I've declared operations mostly finished. Clark is well suppressed, and the US units contained. I'll leave them to stew for a few months before wiping them out. As a result of this, as well as the difficult nature of the Malaya campaign, I'll be switching air units around. A big 42 Nate unit with good experiance has upgraded to Oscars, and will shift over to Malaya in the next week. The two-engine bombers are being replaced with one-engine units for the milk-runs over Clark, and the 2E's will be sent to Malaya as well.

Moving the AVG to Singapore is an extremely smart move. I hadn't thought of that before. That's probably where they can make the biggest impact, which you're learning now. I would stop the bombing raids on Singers until you have his fighters all knocked out, if you can. This is going to mean lots of sweeps. With the AVG there too, it's going to mean lots and lots of sweeps. The Tainan Zero Sentai is ace, as is the 1st Sentai on the IJA side if I recall correctly, so those would be where I'd look first. But you'll still need more. I like to double up on sweeps just to be sure (actually, this applies to all of my "must haves", be it ground/sea/air).

You need more AV in Singers. With level 3+ forts, a 1.3:1 raw AV ratio isn't going to cut it. Even with the disablements your raw AV is a max of what, 1.8k or so? That's not enough. You'll be waiting for him to run out of supply before you can take the base, and that can take a long while. You need a lot more AV there ASAP. I'd say at least 2200, if not 3k+. Where can you find it?

EDIT: That would actually involve another shock attack over the causeway if you moved it all in at once, so I'd do it piecemeal. That will take a while, but it would at least be less bloody for you.
