The lack of contrast makes the text hard to read.

I agree. A white box with the text in it would be much better.

There are several versions of Francesco's counters mod to choose from--not just the one shown in this thread. He also has created a "models" mod for the unit builder interface that accurately depicts equipment.
The models mod is limited to use in other mods depending on how much was changed. The counters mod can be used with most anything. Francesco is a talented and much appreciated fellow with HoI 3 players
Regarding HoI 3, it is well into its 3rd (and likely last) major add on. If you are going to play this game, don't even consider the base game--it is archaic compared to the most recent version TFH. Stability wise, I may not have had a CTD with the game in years (likely more than 1000 hours). The only time I have a problem is with a new mod that is in an early beta status.
BTW, adding any mod or DLC (not expansion) to the main game folder makes it very hard to run any mods. TFH has a mod folder for everything--except one or two that used Mod Dir.

I have Hearts of Iron 3. I bought some of the extras, but it crashes a lot, and sometimes the mods won't work. Common Weapons of WW2 I think I could never get to work correctly. Anyway, I bought it on sale when I bought it and got some value out of it. I played it fairly deeply into a campaign. Russia took over all of Europe after beating Germany, and I was gearing up as the USA to take them on. But, then I got bored after making some landing in Southern France.

I experienced many crashes also. The other day I installed a user made program that doubles the available memory for the exe and have not had any so far, although I haven't played much. HoI3 is decent. Not great imo but not horrible either. If they would streamline certain things while expanding others AND make it turn based, Id probably enjoy it more.

The concept very much interests me, especially how you can't research all techs, so you jhave to make a choice on how you're going to play.
