Here's a new one...

It's 1963, a coup in Ecuador (which really happened) has turned into a civil war (which did not really happen), the pro-communist rebels have gained control of about half of the Ecuadoran air force and crippled the government's remaining air bases, and so the Americans have sent a carrier battle group to take out the rebels.

Nice little scenario.

The US fighter pilots need to be sent back to air combat school, though. The rebels fire a single .50 cal burst, shooting down an F-8; over the next hour or so, the other fighters expend 38 missiles and 70-ish cannon bursts to shoot down 4 F-80 and 2 AT-6.
