The turn continues and the Germans press deeper into France but because of being disorganised, the big prize will elude them this turn.. They are also unable to attack the French targets due to the weather (-2 attacks).

I am asked if I want to enforce a peace between Finland and the Soviet Union.

Lets see what happens if I say no.

Weather and Initiative

The Allies win the Initiative. The Germans seek a re-roll and win it back!
The weather is pretty rubbish though so Paris may not fall this impulse.

The Germans align Hungary.

The Germans decide not to attack Paris, given the -2 modifier, and instead decide to try and take out the unit to the southwest of the capital.

Meanwhile in China the Japanese try a ground strike against Kweillin. The Chinese contest this with their Mohawk and the Japanese counter with their long-range Zero at a 5.0:3.0 advantage.

Round 1

16 (AA) The Chinese abort the Zero
11 (DC) No effect

The Japanese appear to have caught the "Luftwaffe bug" and decide not to risk another round at a 2.0 disadvantage...

The French did well to hang on until the bad weather kicked in, but its surely only a matter of time now... Do you think that the aggressive defence mounted at the outset (a la Dyle Plan) played a part in delaying the German offensive on Paris or were other factors involved in knocking the German off their stride?

The Germans shape up to attack the 5th Infantry Corps southwest of Paris, while the Japanese go for Kweillin.

The French take a chance and bring their Breguet bomber to the hex. The Germans respond with two fighters

Round 1

11 (DC) No effect
13 (DA) The French bomber is aborted.

Fact is I mucked up the German attack by trying to take out Holland and Belgium at the same time. THAT is a no-no.

That enabled a forward defence by the Anglo-French, with a large CW contingent in Belgium.

Given that poor German decision (and the air battle results) I think the Germans have done well to get to where they are now. Paris could take some time to fall yet too!

Onto the combat resolution. In Kweillin its a 5:1 no modifiers on the Assault table and so the Japanese are feeling confident they can take the city and really open up the south of the country...

...a 6 is rolled, which destroys the Chinese defender for no loss.

I think the turn where Warspite burned the O-chit and didn't double any units on the attack is the only reason why France is still around. He had 3 attacks that turn and all miscarried. If he had doubled the units involved, those three combats would have been far different including the likely loss of Gort. The German units would not have been disorganized and the French would be out quite a few units.

It is all good as these early games are a learning fest for those of us trying to get our feet wet with the "modern" game. For me, the Italians have been "winning" battles in the Med, but I don't have a lot of Italian fleet left.

The Allies spend the turn getting into position for future operations - the CW thinking about the Med and China trying to survive. The Soviets start to move into position to attack the Finns but I accidentally fail to cancel an attack at 1:2 [8|]. Fortunately only one Soviet division is lost...
