About infantry recon units

SPWaW is a tactical squad-level World War II game on single platoon or up to an entire battalion through Europe and the Pacific (1939 to 1945).

About infantry recon units

Post by Silvarius »

To get pinned by an OP fire while searching an area is actually the worse encounter result that can occur to the weak recon teams and patrols. That is so true that the idea came recently to my mind to fire myself a mortar salva to force it to withdraw ! Image. And paradoxaly, the more experienced the unit, the worse the pb, as it gets more difficult for the team to be put in a "retreating" state.

I think I'd like to see these units granted the special ability to withdraw when fired at, perhaps only a small fraction of their movement rate and only backwards. That would take into account the fact that they are not here for fighting but mainly for scouting dangerous unknown areas. And most important, that would also make them more interresting to play.

Perhaps snipers and FO could be granted the same ability. But I'm not sure ...

Silvarius,

This seems reasonable and realistic. I'd say that this would help make recon units more useful.

I vote for this. Any other opinions.

OK, maybe just a bit faded.

Hi, I have noticed that units with real high 100+ experiance (long campaign) will move (take cover) when approached by armour. (They also back up during advances sometimes-I move them a hex and then on their own they back up "No I ain't going there sir!!!")I would like during OP fire to be able to pop smoke or back up rather then shoot sometimes.
Recon units should have this retreat/take cover mode as part of their training, so I agree with the above posts.

I usually overcome this problem by setting the range to 1 or 0 and moving slowly. I have walked up next to enemy units and not been spotted, next turn, run and hide.

Definately the way to employ recon units is to go to one hex movement when anywhere near the enemy. However the idea of granting them special abilities to break contact is a good one and realistic too. Reconnaissance units train hard to get information without becoming decisively engaged. I always use recon units but assume that they will die when contacting the enemy, it would be nice to have them survive once in a while.

Seems reasonable, and accurate. I also think snipers should have this capability, not convinced FOs need it.

Hi, Grumble I was an FO (USMC 73-77) and I was real good at hiding and would never have considered shooting at anyone (unless he wanted in my hiding spot). FO's like snipers have to be able to remain in a place for long periods. (I am refering to FO's out on a forward OP not a FIST with a infantry company). However FO's will normally have some support with them and be somewhat to the rear hehehe.

Mogami's post makes me think tbat it could be also interesting to grant these units a bonus in stealth (= more difficult to spot)if it is not already done.

Sorry, my English is failing me ! please read "(more difficult to BE spotted)" if you have not already corrected the fault.

By the way, Mogami, would you be kind enough to explain how you actually did your FO job ? Were you only calling for arty with radio (and had you specific devices to do so efficiently) ? Had you any other missions ? That is just curiosity Image !
