Highlight the stack you want to rename, hold down the alt key and left click. When the name pops up in the dialog box, backspace to clear it and enter what ever you want the new name to be.

You can only rename armies via a round-a-bout method:
1. remove the 3 star from the stack, then create the army with him
2. rename the force stack (see OldSarge's note) to what you want the army to be called
3. now, drop the 3* into the force stack (not the other way around!)

Army will be called what the force stack rename was. Seems the receiving stack name takes precedence.

Alternatively if you have another unit or supply wagon to add to the army, simply rename it to the army title you want and then drop the army tab with all its units into that newly named tab.

I've tried this but when I backspace it simply pushes the old name to the edge of the box. I tried typing the new name but it results in a mix of both names.

I see from another post that this is a bug in the latest patch.

Yep, the bug appeared after 1.04RC6, I rolled back to RC6 and it works well so that is a possible solution for now.

The only other problem I encountered was the unit chevrons had disappeared, from earlier screenshots I took it occured around RC6. This is due to a syntax error in the file userinterface.opt and is easily fixed by removing the semi-colon from the line containing the key inoChevronRation. Credit goes to a poster over on the AGEOD forums for spotting that one.
