Naval Air Support Question

Post by jcrohio »

Playing around with the tutorials - have the following questions.

Trying to move a naval air unit with a movement factor of 9 from Scapa Flow to the North Sea. Getting the normal target shaped cursor that has a little 2 in the lower left and the letter E in the lower right. The two I assume means I can land in sea box 2. What does the E mean?

Also, why only sea box 2 instead of 3? Reading rule 11.3 it states that if I have 6 movement point left I should be able to move to boxes 0,1,2, or 3. I feel like I should have 8 movement points left so should be able to move to any box except 4.

Hope this is clear. I wanted to take a picture but could not.

Thanks

Perhaps This is a move in reaction to a combat attempt? In that case range is halved so 2 box is highest it could go

The E I think means enemy presence which shortens movement as well

Orm - I was using interactive tutorial 18 Naval Combat and screwing around trying some things out (was not following the script).

Markb5ok - The game was in the Init Air Support Phase - looked up the enemy presence and it only affects naval units

Aircraft flying during the Naval air interception steps fly at half range. Hence the aircraft has only enough MP to reach the 2 box.

The 'E' you mentioned is the marker for aircraft flying at extended range and this seems to be a bug since the Vildebeest do not have the ability to fly at extended range.

May I suggest that this thread is move to the Tech Support forum?

Edit: Here is the relevant rule.

11.5.3 Naval air interception
Once combat is initiated in a sea area, each side (active side first) can fly aircraft units into it. You can only
fly units that could fly a naval air mission into that sea area (see 11.3).
You can’t fly naval air interception missions if you chose a pass action.
An aircraft flying a naval air interception mission flies it like a naval air mission except that:
• the aircraft flies with only half its range; and
• a naval air interception mission doesn’t count against your air mission limits.
You can fly an aircraft into any sea-box section it has the range to reach, even a section that doesn’t already
contain friendly units.

I got it - I was messed up on terminology - I was looking at the "Sequence of Play" which named this step as "Att. Air Support" and was not associating it with "Naval Air Interception".

Thanks for the help.

I understand why it was moved to WIF school thread but I still think that the 'E' that appears in the cursor looks like a bug.

Unless I am mistaken, 'E' is for enemy presence, not extended range.
