Easiest, non grog, arcade settings for newbie.

Post by altipueri »

I bought this game today just to see if it was as ridiculous as some people said.

Boy were they right.

330 page pdf manual, says on page 13 to read the accompanying tutorial documentation - where is it? Five years or so after the game came out?

Screen text weirdly almost unreadable, sort of skinny Times font - can it be changed?

Best scenario for newb - I thought maybe Attu/Kiska ?

I've downloaded and now eagerly await by post my hard copy manual + CD. Something to treasure.

I think my 80 bucks would have been better spent on beer and pizza. But at least I can now say in a deep voice that I have WITP-Admirals Edition.

Posting a screen shot of what you see may help about the screen and its setup. The game like all games does not play well on some systems. Please post a screen shot.

Yes you have just consigned a good chunk of your life to the AE rubbish heap! But you are not alone, as we are there with you. I would suggest the Coral Sea scenario as it is simple, quick and relatively balanced! Plus it also happened! Then move to Guadalcanal. But that's just one view. Good luck and welcome aboard. Hal

There are switches you can set to give you and alternate font. They are in a readme file in the install. May be in the latest update, which is highly recommended. It is a little clearer, but that is one of the limitations of the very old game engine it runs on. The game is not all about the game, but the richness of the data behind the game along with the endless possibilities.

Start out with the smaller scenarios to get a feel for the mechanics. Save often, especially before the end of the turn so if you royally screw something up you can easily back up and try something else. Also, before you make large changes to something that has significant ramifications later on, it is a good place to save.

Once you have a feel for the mechanics, post in opponents wanted and take on a live opponent.

Also, read, read, read this forum. Ask questions. We all love to help future victims, errr, players. [;)] Seriously, this is one of the best forums out there for any game. The knowledge base on the game and the history associated with the PTO is amazing. I learn something new everyday from keeping up with here.

And, one last thing, if you have a SO, tell them goodbye. If you have kids, tell them goodbye. Your life as you once knew it, is over... [:D]

Fonts: you would probably prefer the -altFont switch.

If you have not, patch the game up to the current official patch plus data patch. Then read the Addendum notes on how to set up load switches. If you don't understand, people will help. Then take a look at the beta patch in the Tech sub-forum. Most of us play with the latest one.

The tutorial was never done. But there are videos available, as well as newbie AARs in the AAR sub-forum. As daunting as it seems, you need to read the manual at least once cover to cover, including the Appendices, to begin to get the game's innards. Then read it again, slowly, while playing.

Opinions differ on how to begin. Most play a scenario or two, some all of them, some jump into a grand campaign versus the AI. All approaches have pros and cons. I prefer the 1000 Mile War scenario over Coral Sea for a start. Coral Sea is carriers and naval and short. The game rests on understanding logistics, and 1000 Mile introduces some of that.

Ask if you get lost.

Welcome.

Game UI is outdated. Learning curve is terrifying.
Forum community is welcoming and helpful.

Give it the hours it demands and AE pays back unlike any other game I have played.

Hooked another one, by gawd! [:D]

Seriously, either initial game is good. Even both. The game is not cheap, but dollar per hour spent it's the cheapest game out there. The forum here is, as said, simply the best. And The Moose is wise. Heed his words, it will save time, and pain.

When you graduate to playing a campaign scenario, you may want to adjust the screen resolution. I use 1920 x 1080. You fix that in your shortcut target field. Also, I reccomend changing the the Japanese flags to the IJA flag. Those IJN battle flags are hard on the eyes. Go to the artwork mod forum to find the code. You use the editor to apply it.

Here's the shortcut. I forget what the -fd does. I think it makes it full screen (non-windows) which I prefer. You'll need that -archive to.

Are newbees different than worker bees or drone bees? OK, we need to determine who the queen bee is in the WitP-AE forum. Everyone please do a waggle dance to express your votes. Let me try: wig (bull) wag (wink) wog (ell).

I believe there is only one female on this forum. Or at least only one female who posts anywhere near regularly.

So I think the queen bee by default is Gräfin Zeppelin.

I take it you're an anti LGBT activist. Any person regardless of chromosomes should be allowed to aspire to queenhood. What sort of moderator do you profess to be? In any case, Gräfin Zeppelin can be my queen bee any time she likes.

Thanks for your replies.

I updated to a version dated Jan 21 2012 from the startup screen. Should I go beyond that at this stage given a high propensity to screw up a pc if a program doesn't have an idiot proof installer.

Also I play on a 1366x768 laptop, but about half the time it is attached to an external 1920x1080 screen so if any of you also do that it would be good to know your settings.

Thanks again.

To really set the switches well you need to know your CPU set-up in the PC that drives the game. The notes give the syntax, but a multi-core PC needs different settings than a single core.

The screen resolutions can depend on what the screen is physically capable of , and sometimes what its native resolution is. Laptops are sometimes more tricky with the video than desktops with stand-alone video cards.

FWIW, this is my switch array. I have a quad-core desktop though. I play with fairly high resolution graphics on a pretty large monitor. The monitor is capable of going higher, but the icons are too hard on my eyes at maximum rez. This is a good mid-point for me.

-altFont -multiaudio -archive -dd_sw -cpu4 -fd -px1680 -py1050

A hint for those kind of configurations:
Create two desktop shortcuts to the WitP AE .exe. Rename them accordingly, and set one command line up for 1920x1080 and the other for 1366x768. This way you do not need to change the command lines every time, but simply launch the game from the appropriate shortcut. Am I making sense? Hope that helps!

Welcome to the forums!

Read the beginning of the readme.rtf file in the top level of your install folder.
