Welcome aboard.

I never thought that doing an AAR would be so time consuming and difficult.

Also I play on a 1366x768 laptop, but about half the time it is attached to an external 1920x1080 screen so if any of you also do that it would be good to know your settings.

A hint for those kind of configurations:
Create two desktop shortcuts to the WitP AE .exe. Rename them accordingly, and set one command line up for 1920x1080 and the other for 1366x768. This way you do not need to change the command lines every time, but simply launch the game from the appropriate shortcut. Am I making sense? Hope that helps!

Welcome to the forums!

+1. I was about to type all that out, but you already did it!

Let us know if you need help setting this up.

Shortcuts... Here is what I have on my desktop:

Image

Each has it's own custom settings and directs the launching of separate copies of the game from different directories for each game. Allows me to keep each separate along with all the associated files.

Thanks again for your help. I'm set up with two quick starts and text I can read. And my oh my isn't the Pacific large.

I was just starting the Thousand Mile War - Attu/Kiska scenario when I ran across a thread in which someone had prepared a spreadsheet for assisting in the opening moves of the Grand Campaign. I downloaded it and then saw there were some 4,600 units and locations that could be given orders on Day 1!

I see from the game credits that God is kindly thanked for his assistance in designing the game, though I'm inclined to believe the Devil had a hand in the detail.

I have just stated playing this game again and as a new player I made a list and start at one end of the pacific. It took me several short period to get first turn done, but it got a little easier after that. I would start and then save the game when I got tired/ confused or wife needed help. Once I was finished I would then end turn and watch results. Also I make lots of notes and list thing I wanted to check in manual. Am playing scenario 6, Dec 8; Full Campaign. WITPAE with official updates.

You really need to update to the latest beta. You really are missing out on a lot of critical updates. The beta only changes the EXE. so you can update the game an not lose anything you have already done. In other words you do not have to completely restart the game to get all the latest goodies [:)]

Well I've got the latest beta and I'm ready to go and awaiting the manual so I thought I would catch up with some SIGINT on the whole war against Japan.

This goes a bit off topic now but my most immediate eye opening bits of info are :

Japanese force allocation:
50% vs Chinese
25% vs British/Commonwealth
25% vs US

US had 4 carriers at start, about 100 at the end. (cf UK now has one, but we can't afford any planes).
In March 1944 new US planes were being produced at a rate of one every 5 minutes.

In the ten months to October 1944 the Japanese air force failed to sink a single significant American ship.

1.25 million Americans served in PTO and over 40% saw no action whatsoever. (reflects admin/logistic ratio)
400,000 British and 2 million Indian Army served.

In all, some 5 million South-East Asians died as a result of Japanese invasion and occupation, including 75,000 slave labourers on the Burma Railway.
China's people paid a vastly more terrible price than any other beligerent, at least fifteen million dead, for its part in the struggle against the Japanese.

Nimitz good; MacArthur bad.

Japan Pearl Harbor attack - very bad move. Only one ship sunk that wasn't repaired, brought US into war. Not a good strategic payoff - bit like sacrificing a queen to get a pawn.
Japan not invading Russia in 1941-42 in support of Barbarossa - bad move. Foreign minister Matsuoka resigned because Tokyo resisted his urgings to.

Great Marianas Turkey Shoot - 475 planes destroyed (cf 60 Luftwaffe planes destroyed on 15 September 1940 - biggest day of Battle of Britain).

Pearl Harbor - "mostly top brass and hookers"

Nimitz told a joke to MacArthur: Two frantically worried men are pacing a hotel corridor. One finally asked the other what was troubling him. 'I am a doctor,' came the answer,'and I have a patient in my room with a wooden leg, and I have that leg apart and can't get it back together again.' The other man said 'Great guns, I wish that was all I have to worry about. I have a good looking gal in my room with both legs apart, and I can't remember the room number.'

When you graduate to playing a campaign scenario, you may want to adjust the screen resolution. I use 1920 x 1080. You fix that in your shortcut target field. Also, I reccomend changing the the Japanese flags to the IJA flag. Those IJN battle flags are hard on the eyes. Go to the artwork mod forum to find the code. You use the editor to apply it.

What I said about changing the flags using the editor is incorrect. You simply go to the art folder and switch the names of two files.

Image

First rename the the mapiconsJ_altJ_P1 by adding "temp" to it. Then rename the mapiconsJ to mapiconsJ_altJ_P1. Then rename the temp file to mapiconsJ.

** The files you see on the screenshot are after the change.
