Your opponent needs someone as an advisor... It seems he is more defensive than offensive if your dictating terms this early in the game (CR type players excepted!!!)

Gunnulf appears to be a pretty solid player. He has good control of his naval forces and does not use them recklessly.

I think he was focused on where he thought the attack would come from and not on other areas. He will need to be careful with that in the future.

Also, he did not expect the PM attack at all. There was no detection on anything and his subs missed my troop movements over the water.

There is a great likelyhood that this game is going to start getting a lot tougher for me going forward.

I am going to travel the 1st of 4 legs and will likely escape detection this turn.

I noticed that Darwin is 18 hexex from Cloncurry. Moved all of the B-17 forces to Cloncurry & re-assigned them mostly to USN Air Cen Pac which is moving in from Cairns.

July 8, 1942

Moving 2nd of 4 legs of Invasion to Wessel Island. Hopefully the island hides the invasion fleet. I am not too hopeful.

Because detection is likely I have launched an air attack from Cloncurry containing all the B-17's at my disposal. I have over 70 of them there so I am hoping for a hit of 30-40. With them being attached to a HQ present at base will helpfully keep them from too much disruption.

My CA TF got behind so I ran it at full speed today to catch up with the rest of the fleet. I almost never run at full.

Tomorrow I can hit Darwin with the Heavy Cruisers depending on what happens.

The ship at Wessel was not detected today so hopefully his searches are still light.

Subs are spreading out north of Darwin.

I have pretty much all of my surface forces and a large chunk of my carrier forces invested in this op. There is no telling what happens next...

July 9, 1942

Good news/Bad news. The news is mostly good and the invasion continues.

My B-17 bombers reached Darwin with no issues and he had no CAP over the base. Once they got there they couldnt hit crap though. Extremely disappointing runway damage for the number of bombers used. Max range is not very helpful. After considering the invasion I decided to put the bombers on standby for the next day. They would not really help and would only manage to damage the airfield further which I dont really need additional damage above what is going to be done by the bombardment fleets.

His detection lit up only 2 of the invasion task forces. It showed the 10 DMS ships and the CA fleet. The transports, BB TF & CV TF remain undetected. This will not last beyond this turn.

So, what is he thinking???? He has a B-17 attack on Darwin and sighting of a DMS & CA group at Wessel Islands. This is going to lead him to believe 1 of 2 things. Bombardment attack on Darwin to eliminate his air power or invasion. He has CA fleets spotted up north of Boela at the base on the northern tip of New Guinea. One is about 2 days from Darwin and one is about 3 days out. One or both of these could contain CV's. If he makes a mistake and throws a mini-KB my way it might go really badly for him but considering the war so far it would be foolish for him to do so. Ultimately, it is very likely that he will react strongly to the intrusion with both LBA and STF's.

CA's and DMS are going to hit the base in the morning to take out the air field and check to see if it is mined.

I bought out the 27th ID and getting it ready for transport along with other goodies. I will likely send it directly to Australia.

Gunnulf is sweeping Imphal daily so I threw up 3 squadrons of Warhawks to mess up his sweep. I also moved bleinheims to the base and bombed Jorhat. I want to make noise in other theatres of the war to keep his attention divided.

I have also started loading the 18th British Division and the 6th Australian Division along with an armor unit for transport to Cochin. I will move these assets by rail to Jorhat and hit Gunnulf with a 2 or 3 to 1 advantage and blow him out of there and hopefully mess up some of his divisions.

The next turn decides whether the invasion goes through or aborts. This could go really well or really badly. I have almost all the US naval forces in the area however and I think he is pretty well scattered about from Rabaul to Soerbaja. It all depends how fast Gunnulf can get his forces together and pursue and how far he wants to pursue. Horn Island and Merauke can hold lots of dive and torpedo bombers already. He cannot move too far into the sea in that area which gives me a safe zone. Same thing for him coming in from Rabaul. The LBA could be deadly.

Transports and warships continue to converge upon Perth. Invasion of Broome is at least 14 days out. Some of that is dependent upon whether he decides to double down on Australia or pull out. If the Darwin invasion is sucessful he is likely to try to reinforce Broome to allow for retreat.

Still no detection at Port Hedland.

Kodiak is almost 6/6 port/AF so I will be moving troops to Adak soon.

Merauke is 51% to lvl 4 AF Horn is 4% to lvl 5 Wessel Island is 64% to lvl 1.

CC has it pretty well right on... As the Japanese player I too would be salivating over the chance to bomb that many concentrated troops.

I wouldn't even be insistent on taking Horn Is. The key here is AF bases... Lae, Rabaul, and Wewak. All 3 bases can be built up and are supplyable from Truk (even by air)
Lae is for fighter sweeps over Port Moresby (Range< 7), Rabaul & Wewak are bomber/escort bases (Range< 10) The L/R escorts would need drop tanks and the fatigue would be a factor... but If you suppress his CAP then Allied losses are inevitable, I guesstimate 50% - and who wouldn't expend the materials/men to eliminate a division and a half? As CC noted its not friendly terrain and the shipping would be bombable too... so resupply for the Allies is dicey too - definitely worth the risk for the reward IMHO.

I agree it is risk vs reward. I have a division and 2 regiments with about 700AV and 175K supply along with 3 AA units and other support.

The hex is wooded so I get 2* defense plus it helps out alot against enemy bombers. Even if he managed to knock me down to 1/2 strength he would still have to deploy about 4 division to get 2-1 odds.

The japanese player could spend all that blood and treasure building up those bases and isolating my forces and maybe even eliminating them.

However, there is a huge opportunity cost to that. He has to devote a large number of aircraft, LCU's and naval units to the area to sustain the attack until he takes back PM.

Meanwhile I can attack him from Townsville which is lvl 9AF/lvl 7 port which can resupply any naval units I need. If he gets serious about Darwin there are several dot bases on northeast Australia that can be built up to support the base.

In addition, I have no interest in the region at all. Strategically I want to be on Java and I can bypass the whole area we are talking about if I choose to do so. If he doesnt match me in that area because he is reinforcing somewhere that is not seriously contested by me then I move forward faster. Eventually he will have to pick up those troops on Rabaul and surrounding areas and move them to a 2nd perimeter defense. When he does that I can take the area out at my leisure. In addition if he fights for PM then it adds another front for him. And his supply lines are long to support this area as well.

In my opinion, he was going to go for Perth as the Japanese frequently do. When I hit PM that invasion was delayed or cancelled. I am in even further control of Perth and surrounding bases without any Japanese interference. The Japanese player lost the initiative and momentum. Now if he reinforces and attacks around PM it will make the Timor area easier to conquer.

Ultimately I hope he does go after PM and try to take it back. Strategically that would be considered a victory by me.

BUSTED!!! The KB was not as far away as I had hoped it was...

Next turn will be interesting to say the least.

The invasion fleet got 5 hexes away from Darwin. However, I detected the KB 1 hex NE of Boela.

I cannot get the invasion fleet to Darwin without getting attacked so I am aborting the invasion. All ships are pulling back to Wessel Island this turn. If the KB moves a normal 9 hexes there are about 3 hex locations that would put him within 8 hexes of Wessel island. If the KB moves at full speed he can be anywhere in the region.

My intel says he has 6 CV's with 82 fighters and 126 bombers on his decks. My carrier TF has 368 active planes with 238 of them being fighters. I am going with an 80% cap as I do not believe he will come within 7 hexes of me. If he does make that mistake then my planes will attack with a light escort.

I managed to bomb some really good AP's of his due to a carrier strike on Saumlaki. Between the bombardment of Darwin and the carrier strike I managed to take out over 1000 japanese troops this turn. So it is not all bad.

In India Gunnulf is pulling his troops out of Jorhat after a pretty decent bombing of him this turn. Therefore I am cancelling the movement of the 18th Division, the 6th Australian Division and other components. I will likely move the 2 carriers near Perth up to Columbo to assist with an invasion of Port Blair.

He cannot cover both locations adequately so I might as well put pressure where I can.

With the focus on the South Pacific, don't forget the Northern Theater. Seeing Allied units up north is discomforting for Japan, and even more so once the bases are built right up to properly support operations.

If Adak is yours, I'd start seriosuly looking in to small raiding operations. A couple of DD's to slip in on the Hokkaido resource convoys or the Sakhilin shipping lanes. Hardly any risk, and forces Japan to buy stuff out to respond (they can't fly stuff in either, most of the Kuriles are 5th Fleet HQ), and is a win-win for you.

If you're more of a risk-taker, pull a couple of carriers back (or even the CVE's, there are a few due) and throw a couple of regiments and a bunch of engineers on to two or more islands (though secure them first with the small Marine raider units dropped off by APD's) and seriously screw up the Japanese strategic plan.

Chances are your opponent will have to strip the southern front to respond, and by the time he's deployed anything bar Home Islands restricted units, you'll have a pair of nice airbases, mined, with troops well dug in defending airstrips loaded with aircraft. You've got a toehold in the inner permiter, a wound Japan can't afford to ignore and a much easier time in the south.

Just because it isn't 1943 doesn't mean you can't push all over the map. Get engineers on to Adak en masse, and get that base in to a proper redoubt!

Very good ideas. I have about 300AV at Dutch Harbor and over 150AV at Kodiak.

I am just setting up a USAAF Base Force at Annette Island so I can transfer all of the restricted aircraft up there.

Kodiak is 97% to 6/6 and the day that it tops out I will be moving an engineer unit to Adak along with some other LCU's. As I get more engineers than I will know what to do with in the next 8 months I will be sending some up here to build up the area.

Adak is pretty much the only real estate short of the Kuriles worth having. If Dutch Harbour is secure, start pumping things in to Adak, it's the best all-round base in the Aleutians.

You're saying that naval proximity to Japan makes things dangerous. I think you're looking at it from the wrong angle. You've Pearl what, five days sail away? Seattle and the big repair yards are a week tops, and plenty of big bases between that you've built up.

Where else in 1942 and '43 will you be fighting with such assets so close to the frontline? The KB's concerned about SWPAC, so get things moving on the other side of the map. Make sure they're big and that your opponent sees them. Got any of the older battleships around? Have them cover, along with what crusiers you can rustle up, but I'd wager your opponent only has a token force covering the northern approach.

Paramushi-Jima is 4/4 airfield but the other kurile islands appear to be undeveloped and likely unoccupied except for the AA that starts there.

July 11, 1942

No big boom this turn.

The KB solidified it's position near Ambon but did not advance into the sea. I feared being trapped in Darwin harbor so I pulled back to Wessel island.

At this point he is obviously onto me so it is time for plan W. Plan W is for whatever

Decided to unload the troops at Gove. It is a land base I can use to supply troops near Darwin, can be built into a decent air base and allows me to start moving another division towards Darwin without fear of it being sunk. I have another ID enroute from America that is 100% prepped for Darwin if I decide to eventually go in with an amphibious assault.

Going to pull back to Horn with the fleet and transfer some fighters across Australia to the CV's I now have at Perth. They will go north to assist in an invasion of Port Blair. If he keeps the KB as a blocking force near Darwin it cannot cover that area as well. It will force him to make choices.

Men and materials continue to move from America toward Australia. The stuff comes in waves and I have about 20 days for the next wave including a division and many engineer & BF assets.

Merauke jumped to lvl 4 AF. 3 days or so till Wessel goes lvl 1.

Kodiak should hit 6/6 soon.

Lots of reinforcements within the next week including a lot of engineers.

July 12, 1942

A quiet turn. The KB and crew disappeared somewhere or are just not being picked up by my searches this turn. A good bit of the ID division heading for Darwin got ashore along with a CEB. The base is already 5%/5% developed to lvl 1.

Wessel Island goes to 88% development.

Merauke is at 23% to lvl 5.

I have some armor swinging west around Daly waters and my 2 divisions are moving up south of the city. The unit swinging out might give him some concern. I also have armor moving up the coast from Normanton.

Up in india units continue to move towards Dimapur and Jorhat. I will come close to 2-1 within a week. Disruption and fatigue is high though so I will have to see how they firm up.

Units are boarding transports for Adak island. Going to build that up to max lvl to threaten the kuriles.

July 13, 1942

Quiet turn all around.

The Troops continued unloading at Gove. In 1 turn they should be done. Gunnulf has some ships and possibly cruisers up at Saumlaki and I am getting bold enough to do a sortie north to 6 hexes away from the base with my carrier group. If I am lucky he will take some damage to cruisers. If I am not lucky he will have left the area.

He has no AF an Samlauki so the only other issue could be a CAP trap. I have the BB bombardment fleet and CA bombardment fleet from Darwin covering my AF carrier fleet.

Gove jumped up 10% on both AF & Port this turn so within 9 days it will be functional. Wessel island will go to LVL 1 af tomorrow likely. Merauke is 40% of the way to lvl 5.

I am unloading the 40th division at Horn Island for re-packing as an amphibious task force. I will likely drop them at Gove. I need to get some ships into upgrade them and there is going to be some quiet time for some of the fleets within the next month to do it in hopefully.

I have a cruiser and destroyer making a solo run up into the northern territories to see how much search he has and to see if I can get behind his lines and into his supply convoys. Also good for Psyops...

2 carriers are at Geraldton. They dont have fighters on them yet but already have 40 LBA CAP and more av support and planes on the way.

Another ID just left the east coast heading for Australia.

I think he may be trying something sneaky in China but we will have to see.

I have 790 AV in Jorhat working on about 1K before I attack his armies there. Also hoping disruption and fatigue goes down a little.

July 14, 1942

It was a fortuitous day for the Allies. The CA fleet I thought was covering the unloading of troops to Saumlaki turned out to be 2 CVL's and 4 BB's with other assorted goodies including fleet oilers.

This was no match for the assembled carrier might of the US navy. Nothing sunk outright but there were several ammo/fuel explosions and I did see one magazine get flooded. I expect some points out of the encounter. Those fleet oilers might have been as important as the CVL's.
