I don't often check plane fatigue. I add reserve aircraft whenever allowed so if the AI is only rotating pilots and not airframes that kind of sucks. I thought when aircraft were under maintenance it was the high fatigue airframes that were being worked on. Isn't that the whole purpose of performing maintenance? If not that could explain why I'm losing aircraft at the current rate.

The impression I get is that the game only rotates aircraft into maintenance (replacing them from reserve) when they reach high levels of plane fatigue (something like 50+). I also don't think it does a good job of picking the least fatigued aircraft to fly. Below is a Mavis group that has been on 50% search, 50% rest, range 14 for the last couple of months. As can be seen only half the aircraft are damaged.

Interesting thought about the effect of advanced weather on ops losses.

OT - Out of control

Post by SqzMyLemon »

The game is on hiatus at the moment with Jocke out of commission with a sore back. I don't wish back pain on anyone after starting to suffer bouts of it myself over the last few years. In the meantime I'm occupying some online time ordering new kits.

Argh, I'm totally addicted to online model ordering! A large Christmas bonus and some extra money came my way over the holidays and I've indulged in getting some kits that I wasn't meaning to anytime soon, but figured what the heck.

Here's the latest damage:

1:32 Tamiya A6M2b Zero (beautiful kit from all accounts)

1:48 Eduard Spitfire Mk. IX (This is a royal class kit which means two airplane kits and 15 marking options, photo-etch and resin extras)

1:48 Eduard Me 109E-4 and 1:48 Eduard Me 109E-7 Trop

1:32 Wingnut Wings WW1 aircraft kits of a British SE.5a, British AMC DH.2 and a German Rumpler C.IV Early

I blame Jocke for not being able to send any turns and keeping me otherwise occupied. [:D]

I received a turn from Jocke this morning so looks like there's a chance to get this game moving again. Hopefully his back will cooperate!

Jocke, when sending the next turn, confirmed that the CV was actually Lucky Lady Lex that was targeted and not CV Saratoga as my intelligence indicated. CV Lexington took two torpedo hits back in July during the Allied resupply operation to Makin. I'm assuming she was heading back to Pearl Harbor after completing her repairs on the West Coast. The CV was heavily escorted only by DD's which leads me to believe she was only in transit and will pick up more substantial escorts for combat operations.

Perhaps Jocke has been waiting for her return before conducting further operations. I'll try and improve my search capability to provide adequate warning of the Allies being on the move again.

Dec. 3/42 Update

Post by SqzMyLemon »

A good day in China and a couple of successes for the Navy.

China:

Chinese troops were indicated as moving out of Chungking with the intention of crossing the river to occupy the rough woods hex directly southeast of the base. I believe this move is meant to control the hex and create an open hexside retreat route for the large Chinese force isolated in the area. I had already been moving a division to block this maneuver and it arrived in the hex today. Facing the threat of the Chinese somehow being able to open a retreat path for 11 trapped LCU's, I decided I'd risk attacking with the only force at hand, the 6th Division.

I performed a recon artillery bombard the day before to see what I was facing. With 11 LCU's, including seven corps, the Chinese could only muster an AV of 415. The Japanese 6th Division was ordered to launch a deliberate attack today and it was extremely successful. This enemy force, in 2x defensive terrain, has been bombed mercilessly for months and is spent as a fighting force as the following AAR shows:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 77,48 (near Chihkiang)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 12557 troops, 102 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 456

Defending force 29794 troops, 94 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 347

Japanese adjusted assault: 363

Allied adjusted defense: 3

Japanese assault odds: 121 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), disruption(-), fatigue(-), experience(-)
supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
84 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 13 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 1 disabled

Allied ground losses:
12498 casualties reported
Squads: 644 destroyed, 81 disabled
Non Combat: 706 destroyed, 4 disabled
Engineers: 9 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 77 (77 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units destroyed 8

Assaulting units:
6th Division

Defending units:
87th Chinese Corps
84th Chinese Corps
7th Chinese Corps
20th Chinese Corps
74th Chinese Corps
5th Chinese Cavalry Corps
9th War Area
Central Reserve
37th Chinese Corps
57th AT Gun Regiment
4th Heavy Mortar Regiment

6th Division is ordered to attack again on the 4th and wipe this enemy force out. I'm not concerned with re-spawning. The destruction of any Chinese units is the goal at the moment. I'll post a screenshot of China next update, but it mostly likely won't show the trapped enemy force since I expect it to be wiped out next turn.

Sub Ops:

A rare successful attack. [8|]

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submarine attack near Pentecost Island at 120,151

Japanese Ships
SS I-33

Allied Ships
xAKL Ngakuta, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage

xAKL Ngakuta is sighted by SS I-33
SS I-33 launches 4 torpedoes at xAKL Ngakuta

ASW Ops:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Sub attack near Umboi Island at 100,125

Japanese Ships
PB Taijin Maru

Allied Ships
SS Narwhal, hits 5 (one was even a direct hit!)

SS Narwhal launches 2 torpedoes at PB Taijin Maru
Narwhal bottoming out ....
PB Taijin Maru fails to find sub, continues to search...
PB Taijin Maru fails to find sub, continues to search...
PB Taijin Maru fails to find sub, continues to search...
PB Taijin Maru fails to find sub, continues to search...
PB Taijin Maru attacking submerged sub ....
Escort abandons search for sub

It seems I can't hit anything other than lowly xAKL's with my submarines, but at least it's something positive. I am pleased with an enemy submarine taking one right on the kisser though. I can't think of a more rare event in this game.

Wow. Nice of him to giftwrap those LCUs for you! His supply situation must be beyond dire if one attack straight up destroyed those guys.

I like to think I had something to do with trapping this force [;)]. Unfortunately, it's a completely different situation trying to make similiar progress in 3x terrain. Still, it's encouraging that if I get enough time I should be able to wear down the resistance in the mountainous terrain due to the lack of supply.

China:

Two big Chinese Corps were eliminated during the second deliberate attack today at position 1 on the following map. I was surprised at the haul of destroyed squads. One more unit to go and all the trapped enemy forces will have been eliminated. AAR follows:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at 77,48 (near Chihkiang)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 12481 troops, 102 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 446

Defending force 17260 troops, 39 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 159

Japanese adjusted assault: 181

Allied adjusted defense: 3

Japanese assault odds: 60 to 1

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), disruption(-), fatigue(-)
morale(-), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker: fatigue(-)

Japanese ground losses:
159 casualties reported
Squads: 0 destroyed, 16 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 2 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled

Allied ground losses:
16635 casualties reported
Squads: 954 destroyed, 1 disabled
Non Combat: 898 destroyed, 0 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 51 (51 destroyed, 0 disabled)
Units destroyed 2

Assaulting units:
6th Division

Defending units:
74th Chinese Corps
7th Chinese Corps
87th Chinese Corps

I got lucky at position 2 today as the Chinese unit moving from Chungking shock attacked across the river into the waiting arms of 68th Division and suffered accordingly. I am so lucky I arrived at this hex the day before. The 68th Division is ordered to deliberate attack and clear the hex. AAR follows:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at 77,46 (near Chungking)

Allied Shock attack

Attacking force 835 troops, 18 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 14

Defending force 7746 troops, 56 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 175

Allied adjusted assault: 0

Japanese adjusted defense: 400

Allied assault odds: 1 to 99

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), leaders(+), experience(-)
Attacker: shock(+), leaders(+), supply(-)

Allied ground losses:
476 casualties reported
Squads: 31 destroyed, 0 disabled
Non Combat: 0 destroyed, 21 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 0 disabled
Guns lost 18 (12 destroyed, 6 disabled)

Assaulting units:
95th Chinese Corps

Defending units:
68th Division

There are actually six Chinese units caught in the open there. The Chinese force two hexes east of Patung contains 10 LCU's. In total there are 22 Chinese units that still face total destruction.

Last turn the remaining Chinese unit at position 1 surrendered, as did the Chinese unit at position 2 netting another 366 infantry and 535 non-combat squads destroyed. The enemy force directly southwest of Chungking consists of six LCU's that have a retreat path to Chungking, but can't move West, Southwest or Southeast.

Bombers are concentrating on the enemy forces directly southwest of Chungking and two hexes east of Kunming. It's time to isolate Chungking fully and break the stalemate on the road to Kunming.

I've netted almost 500 VP's in the last three days from destroyed Chinese units. I'm back to just over a 3:1 lead. Now if I can only start causing air and naval losses to the Allies over the next 6 months before the Essex's start to arrive.

Yer darn tootin'! That's the spirit! It's not only Allied missteps that can spell disaster for the Allies in China. It has a little something to do with a capable, supplied and well-lead opponent too.

Is there any chance at all you can approach the 4:1 ratio within the month? A January 1, 1943 autovictory would be sweet...

First year anniversay

Post by SqzMyLemon »

It's taken us a long time, but we've completed the first year of the war. There won't be a turn from Jocke today so I plan on providing some information to show the state of the economy.

First up is the overview from tracker. I've slowed my HI stockpliling somewhat in order to produce more aircraft in the short term. Mostly bombers and floatplanes. I'm still addressing the lack of fuel in Manchuria, so the HI numbers are only what is currently producing. Once the fuel situation is under control that number will increase by roughly 500 HI.

Here's the overall situation:

Here the latest resource history for Japan proper. Supply dropping is a concern, but immediate needs for the A6M3a and D4Y1 require some factory expansion. Added to this are R&D factory repairs which are exceeding expectations and using up more supply than anticipated.

I recommend that next time, you map out how much supply it's going to cost you, and compare to what you'll be producing. You're still OK for now IMO (only down ~3.75k per turn these past 20 turns), but you may need to curtail either factory repairs or supply shipments if you get much lower.

Here's the intelligence report:

Image

A2A losses are low because of the complete lack of combat. Where I'm getting killed is in Ops losses. A heavy air campaign in China and the need to constantly fly air ASW and Search missions is taking it's toll.

I was having a hard time accepting that R&D was using that much supply so I took a hard look at what is happening in the Home Islands that is preventing supply stockpiling. It's not R&D or factory expansion that's the problem, it's base and fort expansion. I recently instituted a country wide increase in construction for defensive purposes. That's where my supply is going. I will be cancelling all construction to determine if this is truly the cause, but I expect supply will start to stockpile once again as soon as I do. I will then resume high priority construction in a more limited fashion.

An encouraging note from the overall availability of resources is that I'm getting the majority of oil back to the Home Islands with less than 500k available to export. I'm still dragging my butt getting fuel back though and there are still large stockpiles at Palembang, Singapore and Saigon.

With 1943 quickly approaching I'll begin to post more about the state of my overall defences and force dispositions. I think 1943 is going to be an extremely busy year and will see the war heat up in a number of areas. I can only hope the sitzkrieg has helped me prepare enough positions to make things difficult for the initial Allied advance into a few key areas. I will be looking for advice on how to effectively fight back against an Allied force that is almost 100% intact and has any number of grand slam type operations available to pursue.
