Reloading and supply

Post by Dabrion »

I find it most annoying that I spend more time looking at loading bars than looking at a hex grid.. on top of that I have to restart the game client after two consecutive reloads of a solo-mode savegame? Why is that necessary?!

Perhaps let us manually trigger a supply calculation, as this is the sole purpose of the reload.

Since no one has a clue what you are currently working on, how about: SUPPLY! How can work be done on other things, if such an integral mechanic is not working without flaw?! I am puzzled!

You're not wrong. The supply bugs are highly annoying and reloading doesn't always fix them. And it's true that even if/when all the crash bugs are hammered out, this bug makes it impossible to play the game as intended. But as usual, ranting and raving isn't going to make the bugs go away or give Steve a sudden burst of superpowers to fix them. All it will do is bring out the hear-no, see-no, speak-no crowd and turn the post into another troll fest.

I do wish that Steve would, at a minimum, give us some idea what he's working on. I've seen some hints he is working on supply but confirmation would be great

Others have mentioned taking the most obvious HQ (that should be supplying) in-hand and then pressing Esc - will cause a supply recalc. That's less intrusive than moving the HQ and then undoing the move.

Hope that may help.

I will try that! But it should only work in steps where the HQ is leagally selectable, right?

Perhaps whoever mentioned it can clarify. What you expect sounds reasonable, but what all triggers Supply recalc is unknown to me.

Here is a condensed list of what I want to work on concerning supply this coming week. I have a lot more details for each of these and there are another half dozen lower supply issues not listed. For each of these I have a saved game - sometimes more than one.

Although the list is long I think that there are probably only 3 or 4 bugs that need to be fixed. Almost all of these concern overseas supply. Note that the choice of optional rules varies in these games, as do the relationships between the major powers and minor countries. The code for determining supply is over 10,000 lines long and it takes me quite some time (3-4 hours) to get my head around it each time I begin analyzing it.

---
Supply
- Japanese HQs in Manchuria are OOS.
- HQ Umezu moves 1 hex NE in China. Once Umezu has moved, a couple of Japanese units are shown OOS. However, they should be in supply through Yamamoto. Moving Umezu causes Yamamoto to disappear from the list of valid supply sources. However, the units Yamamoto is supplying are still shown as in supply. Very confusing.
- German HQ in Morocco is OOS although he is next to an Italian unit which can trace supply.
- German units in Albania should be able to trace supply to a port and then through the Italian Coast to a primary supply source in Italy.
- Germans in India are OOS.
- Italy has conquered Egypt and an Italian HQ there should be able to trace supply via an Italian convoy in the E Med and rail through Greece and Yugoslavia, which are German controlled, back to Italy. They are shown as OOS. If there is an Italian convoy in the Italian Coast the supply works.
- Italian units, which should be OOS after the Commonwealth DOWs Italy and closes the Suez Canal, are shown as still in supply to a secondary supply source (Mogadishu). Restoring a saved game after the DOW has the supply correct.
- Libyan territorial is shown as OOS although it should be able to trace supply through the Eastern Mediterranean.
- When setting up the USSR units east of the Caspian Sea, with a convoy in the Caspian Sea, and using Limited Overseas Supply, the land units are shown as OOS until the next phase.
- Calculating supply for Commonwealth units near Gibraltar causes an infinite loop.
- The Commonwealth is at war with Vichy France. Free French convoys should work to give Commonwealth units a supply path overseas but they do not. The Free French CP in W Med should give supply to the CW units in Tripoli and Tunis but they are shown OOS. If the Italian units are not in the W Med the supply does work. The LOS option is ON.
- French units in Rouen are OOS.
- Free French units in New Caledonia are stated as OOS, but there are no enemy ships in the Coral sea, so they should be in supply.
- USSR units are sometimes able to trace supply through an enemy ZOC.
- Moving an HQ with other units causes the other units to be OOS because the HQ is not on the map. Then when the units are placed in a hex, they are disorganized. This is very bad when the HQ is being used as part of a stack to overrun enemy units.
- Advancing a unit as part of Land Combat Resolution failed to cut supply to other defending units.
- Expending a supply unit does not immediately make an HQ a primary supply source. The game first needs to be saved and restored.
- Value of Notional unit is wrong because supply status is determined incorrectly. The most likely cause is that the presence of the invading enemy unit is exerting an enemy ZOC into the Notional unit’s hex.

When the supply goes wrong, I usually try a quick diagnose. Sometimes you will see that some units are listed twice in the F8 dialog (lower unit panel). Unsure if it is a further symptom of that bug or linked to its cause. Might be worth a look.

p.s.: thanks for the list! gone fishing..
