Single digit above/below zero lows. kids, three days off from school. Loved Alabama yesterday; everyone hit the panic button at noon, massive traffic jams.
That's rich. You guys crack me up.[:D][:D][:D]

I hear 'ya, Schani. It's pretty funny to northerners, but it's what happens when there is one salt truck per county and it only gets used every 3 or 4 years. How many miles on those salt trucks and plows up yonder? [:'(]

Ice is tricky, even up here. From what saw and heard was a lot of the traffic jams were caused was from vehicles running out of fuel and being abandoned. People, was there no notice ahead of time of the approaching weather.[8|]

The big thing up here is fire. At least a dozen homes/trailers in the area this last week heavily damaged or destroyed. One death only. And a couple businesses and grain elevators since December.

The next problem facing you down there is if the cold continues ground frost can become a problem. Water mains begin rupturing. Good luck.

You stocked well Mike. How's the schnapps holding up?[;)]

Being a retired firefighter, I can tell you first hand, that life sucks when you become a "firecicle". This is a firefighter in near zero conditions spraying water on a fire and the spray freezing on the turnout gear that is insulated, so goes to ambient temps very quickly on the surface. This freezing spray then forms layers of ice on the gear. This not only limits movement, but also adds a lot of weight to the firefighter. All this makes the job so much harder, plus all the ice on the ground that is freshly frozen and very smooth with a coefficient of friction near 0.

When you first arrive, everything is nice and toasty, with the fire going. But, the better job you do containing/extinguishing the fire, the colder and more of a firecicle you become.

Support you local firefighters. Either volunteer or paid. It is better to have them and not need them than to not have them and need them.

Anyways, off my soapbox.

Good, it is lunch time! I have some Arby's coupons! [:D]

Alabama was worse today. Mobile was shut down, ice on the roads, and the local 15 News was out in force screaming at people who were driving. I hooked up my old Cali go-to-Big Bear tire treads, and was moving right nice. Was going to Winn-Dixie for milk, butter, eggs, and ice cream and got the corner of Fairhope Ave and 98, when some A-hole newsy starts screaming at me about how I'm going to kill people by being on the road, so I point to my tires and say "those are tire chains and I've driven in these, and worse, conditions almost every year for the last 25". Needless to say, that segment wasn't put on the news. I got my milk, butter, eggs, and some salmon, crawfish, crackers, brocolli, peppers, onions, soy, oyster sauce, yogurt, and a fresh baked, still warm, Tuscan boule. I was the only person in the whole store; now that was a trip. But, I got my stuff and drove home just righty tighty.[;)]

They (we) crack me up, too. A $25.00 set of tire treads and all the nonesense stops. Oh well, there ain't no accounting for intelijense. Woof !!

Ciao. JWE

I hope you pointed out to said A-hole that you were better equiped for conditions than he was [;)][:D]

I'm back in the office today, but schools are closed for one more day. The street in front of my house got plenty of sun yesterday and was completely clear, but I quickly learned why the school buses are not running today when I headed into work. Almost everywhere that didn't get a bunch of sunlight yesterday was a skating rink. Main roads are clear and dry, but there are still lots of terrible places to try to drive. That's what happens when it doesn't go above freezing at all yesterday and is 8 degrees F this morning! Warmer temps today near 40 and lots of sunshine will clear up the rest of the bad spots. Saturday and Sunday are forecast to be upper 50's and mid 60's. I'll be riding my bike on the same roads I could barely keep my car on this morning in 3 days time. [8D]

6" of the white stuff in the driveway this morning. School buses on time, even though the roads were unplowed. 20F and little wind. A quiet morning. [8D]

I'd hate to have to be the poor SOB that had to commute in the stuff though! [:'(]
