RE: Dec. 18/42 Update

Post by SqzMyLemon »

I had an epiphany last night while completing the turn regarding reinforcement of the Kuriles. I've already changed the majority of the bases to 'General Defense HQ' so that means I can airlift in reinforcements directly from Japan. I'm going to deploy the 52nd, 53rd and 54th Divisions. I know the heavy equipment will be left behind, but this means I can get some decent AV established in the theatre. When PP's allow I can then buy out the divisions to move the heavy equipment.

I'm looking all over the map for ways to reinforce a number of areas. I've got more combat and support LCU's heading to the IO to shore up that flank as well. My defensive priorities remain to secure the flanks and Marianas before worrying about what is happening in New Guinea or the Solomons. The first series of roadblocks and stronger defensive positions are being put in place to slow Allied movement and give me a chance to interdict before they hit the MLR. This may sound hard to believe, but I have too many units in the Solomons and Central Pacific. I wish I had half the aviation support units back and deployed in more effective positions. I've begun withdrawing a number of units, hopefully I can get them out before the Allies are fully established and can interdict my forces.

Can't your big flying boat transports move some of the medium equipment? I don't have time to look up load costs at the moment, but the Emily transport carries a big load, as does the Mavis.

The Helen and Sally transports aren't too shabby either, though their range is much less.

pretty sure that transport load only matters with supplies. With devices, they either move 1 or 2 depending upon whether they are < or > 2000kg. They can only move up to load cost 7? devices ... anyway, Emily moves 2 devices, that's it.

I thought there was a calculation for load cost vs. transport load, and that the really big ones could move small AFVs and larger guns, due to having very large loads.

For paradrops, I know that you can't paradrop anything with a load cost higher than a certain amount (12?). I'll need to look in the manual.

Right now all my Emily's and Mavis's are performing naval search missions. I'll re-deploy an Emily unit to troop transport and see what it can move.

I'm still bleeding supply in the Home Islands. I'm at a loss as to why I'm losing 7-8k a day which translates into spending about 30k a day in the Home Islands including what is produced daily. There's no way I've repaired 30k of R&D a day over the last month. Very few units are rebuilding and none of which are larger than a Naval Guard unit. I'm not exporting supply so where is it going in such large quantities daily?

The game has slowed right down due to events in Jocke's other game. I may get a turn today, but if not, I'm nerding it up on a regular basis with my models anyway.

OT - what models?

What about air unit replacements? What about units drawing in organic supply? Anything? Are you sure there isn't a CS convoy set up somewhere?

I'm working on about 5 kits right now. A 1:48 scale F6F-5 Hellcat, 1:48 scale Corsair, a 1:350 DD Yukikaze,a 1:700 scale CV Shokaku and lastly a 1989 Ferrari Formula 1 car. I've also been receiving most of the new kits I mentioned in a previous post awhile back.

As to the supply issue. No idea. I do have some plane replacements and reconstituted small LCU's rebuilding and of course R&D. What I don't get is the consistency of the usage. I usually follow my production closely, but I've never encountered this before. I know I increased R&D more than in the past, but it should show more fluctuations then what appears to be a consistent daily drop. I'm getting quite worried because I don't think I've done anything too crazy here in terms of numbers, especially when I see other player's production figures. I'm well below most of them yet my supply is dropping like a rock. Replacements for 95% of units in the Home Islands are turned off as well, so that shouldn't be the cause either. I just don't know what is happening.

did you run out of sufficient oil for the refineries to produce their 1 supply per turn?

Well, you can always turn everything off if your supply is getting low. Factories repairs, unit replacements, the whole nine yards.

What is the number? Are you under 1M? Is it dropped 30k/day every day? In my experience, the only thing that can cause that kind of a drop is shipping supply.

What about Yokohama Ku U-1? They should be flying the H6K2-L, the cargo version of the Emily. They, IIRC, cannot be tasked with recon / Nav Search and would be good candidates for this sort of work.

The benefit of this is that you can also make sure a fragment is left behind in case they are isolated.

You can do this with the Bonins as well, a the Emilys will go there, then you could even extend it out as you change other bases father on to General Defense, but it would take some PPs. I guess it's important to find out if the cost is worth it.

You should get all of your Patrol and all of your transport ready now to fly troops both in reinforcement and in retreat. Use the IJN 2E Nells for naval search primarily.

My Emily-L actually can take bigger guns than a patrol Emily. So the load matters. There are a few gun types in big early war full divisions that don't fly, but some of the later divisions I can pull the whole thing. The Tabbys do pretty well and get a ton of troops moving. Also, if they are in regular range they'll often take two trips a day. Love the Thalia for this also due to it's range, although the Helen transport is a beast too and seems much more sturdy than other IJAAF transports.

Jocke loves air transport. [;)]

Do any of your transports ever take more than 2 devices?

Hi Andre,

I thought I had been, but I've sent another by PM. I think I was thinking that if I responded via my e-mail they would go through, at least I thought they went through in the past. I could be wrong though. Anyway, PM sent so hopefully we're good.

Not sure. I just notice when they're closer they do double work, but I've not tested any of it.

Dec. 20/42 Update

Post by SqzMyLemon »

Another quiet turn and there was a focus on Tarawa by Allied recon. I'm not sure I want to risk sailing KB around in the hopes of interdicting an amphibious operation on the periphery. As much as it would be nice to whack something, I'm not inclined to let Jocke know where, when or how I'll interdict his operations moving forward. I've already tried to interdict three such operations and come up empty every time. If I don't get adequate warning from search I most likely will not respond. There isn't much in the way of LBA support for KB on the perimeter either, so I don't want to risk an even odds encounter with all the American CV's just yet.

An American submarine hit a mine at Milne Bay during the replay and sinking sounds were heard later. Tracker showed it as hitting a mine and subsequently scuttled. Jocke has scuttled a fair number of heavily damaged ships. Is this just to deny me a few VP's? If so it's kind of cheesy.

No action is planned for tomorrow, but there will be some aircraft R&D advancements to report.

Dec. 21-22/42 Update

Post by SqzMyLemon »

Dec. 21/42:

Just bombing in China. Chungking's airbase and troops east of Kunming being the targets.

Production:

Ki-43-IIIa Oscar advances R&D to 4/44
D4Y2 Judy advances R&D to 3/44

DD Tamanami joins the fleet.

Dec. 22/42:

Southeast Pacific:

An Allied landing at Ndeni. SC's provide naval support for xAP Kota Inten to unload the 161st Infantry Rgt. I will not contest this landing and the defence consists of nothing more than a JNAF AF and Naval Guard units. I have bigger worries than a small invasion in the Southeast Pacific.

China:

A bad roll in China results in a drubbing against the defenders blocking the road to Kunming. Jocke has reinforced the hex, overstacking as usual and it pays off once again. I've been bombing this force daily for three days, yet despite the attacks and AV advantage, the terrain and supply levels are enough for the defenders to hold. AAR follows:

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ground combat at 70,48 (near Kunming)

Japanese Deliberate attack

Attacking force 34807 troops, 405 guns, 157 vehicles, Assault Value = 1087

Defending force 21956 troops, 101 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 656

Japanese adjusted assault: 601

Allied adjusted defense: 970

Japanese assault odds: 1 to 2

Combat modifiers
Defender: terrain(+), experience(-), supply(-)
Attacker:

Japanese ground losses:
3278 casualties reported
Squads: 22 destroyed, 171 disabled
Non Combat: 22 destroyed, 118 disabled
Engineers: 3 destroyed, 15 disabled
Guns lost 103 (91 destroyed, 12 disabled)
Vehicles lost 27 (12 destroyed, 15 disabled)

Allied ground losses:
853 casualties reported
Squads: 2 destroyed, 69 disabled
Non Combat: 2 destroyed, 15 disabled
Engineers: 0 destroyed, 3 disabled

Assaulting units:
15th Division
60th Division
13th Division
19th Tank Regiment
23rd Army
1st Mortar Battalion
2nd Mortar Battalion
11th Army
21st Mortar Battalion
2nd Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment
10th Ind. Mountain Gun Regiment
52nd Ind.Mtn.Gun Battalion
20th Ind. Mtn Gun Battalion

Defending units:
40th Chinese Corps
26th Chinese Corps
54th Chinese Corps
7th War Area
7th Group Army
3rd Heavy Mortar Regiment

A ridiculous result considering the circumstances and 91 guns lost on the side of the Japanese seems excessive. I get more divisions trashed facing out of supply Chinese forces now than ever before. I knew from the first reduction in AV during the replay I had gotten a bad roll.

Economy:

However, invasion at Ndeni or a bloody nose in China are meaningless compared to what is happening in the Home Islands. I continue to burn through roughly 25-30k supply/day which drops the pool daily by 5k. At this rate I will be out of supply in Japan proper within 260 days. I'd stopped sending supply out some time ago to not reduce the stockpile further. Reduced supply to the Empire means a weakened dfensive capability throughout the map.

I'll post more on this later once my Tracker finally fires up and I can post the numbers.

Besides checking to see if too many airframe and engine factories are repairing, double check your "CS Convoys" to see if they drop off Resources and return with Supplies. I've done it in the past, so I know it can be overlooked. [:(]

this supply situation is quite troubling. Did you check tracker to see if there is some spoilage occurring somewhere?
