RE: What could possibly go wrong? Wargamr(A) vs njp72(J)

Post by Mike McCreery »

SW Australia Feb 14, 1942

NJP moved a stack of 760 AV including a division and 3 brigades east along the road to Kalgoorlie. I believe it was his intention to secure the rail line from Geraldton to Kalgoorlie and then do an Amphibious assault on Port Augusta or nearby locations and secure a rail head which he could propagate the war very close to Melbourne.

I am not sure if he knew the strength of my forces in the SW Australian area. I manuvered 2 divisions past his troops heading for Kalgoorlie and managed to shock attack Cunderdin and achieve a 3 to 1 victory against the troops there.

He now has a problem... He can move troops back from Kalgoorlie but if he leaves any strength there then he would not have sufficient force to attack my 2 divisions. He has additional forces of unknown strength to the NW near Geraldton but those will take time to move.

I was moving troops out from Perth to assist in the attack on Cunderdin but they did not get to the area in time so I am moving them back again to garrison Perth. Between the 2 divisions that attacked Cunderdin and the forces at Perth I have over 1000 AV and 40K supplies. He has (had) about the same amount of forces before the Cunderdin attack.

Within 2 weeks the Americal division will be formed at Melbourne and within a month there will be 300+ more AV in the Sydney area just due to reinforcements. I pulled several brigades out of Sydney to garrison Port Augusta. That will give them approximately 250 AV which would not be sufficient to stave off a concerted attack but might delay NJP enough for other actions. I also have 3 cruisers at Port Augusta if he comes in with naval forces. He has a large Naval fleet off Geraldton ATM and that is what led me to believe an Amphibious assault is likely.

Worst case scenario he cuts off and kills 1000 AV of troops in SW Australia. Best case scenario is that he manages to lose a big chunk of Japanes forces early in the war.

SW India Feb 14, 1942

I have noticed that NJP attacks in force but is not defending any of his territory. Due to that I took a city last turn and will take 2 more this turn. He may come back and chase me around but it uses his supply and costs him time.

He has a unit at Madras but nothing sufficient to case the base serious concern.

My plan is to keep manuvering small units and take back everything possible while baiting him to chase after me. The more diluted his forces are the less damage they can do.

He is running out of time...

Diego Garcia Feb 14, 1942

This area has been heating up over the last week or two. NJP put a sub or two in the lane between Diego and Capetown and I have been chasing them around.

This surface fleet is just northwest of Diego
BB Haruna CA Atago CL Jintsu, Shell hits 1 CL Kinu DD Hagikaze

I have the CA Dorsetshire and the CL concord in a surface task force at Diego Garcia and another 4 DD's of an ASW combat.

The airfield just went to lvl 2 and I have wildabeest torpedo bombers attacking. It is a small group but it will make NJP piss or get off the pot. He is going to either bombard the base or pull back IMO as he probably doesnt want his BB to take a torp.

A transport fleet showed up but I have it diverted and waiting south of the base. It is just more supplies that I do not need ATM.

Anyway, I am really glad this is happening right now as I want NJP's focus to be on Diego Garcia. If this turns out to be an amphibious assault he had better have brought 4 divisions because I have over 500 AV behind lvl 3 forts and I am not going to give up easily.

Jan 15 1942

NJP is pushing on the hex just northwest of Siam in China. I have about 1100 AV he has about 1600 with more on the way. I have 1700 AV in Siam. I am going to lose the city anyway so I am moving all 1700 into the hex NW of Siam and then moving the entire stack of 2800 AV backwards into the rough/mountains, etc.

I will lose Sian but I will lose it anyway and it is much better to get into good terrain.

China might be one of the theatres I cannot hold NJP in.

Allied Bases Captured

Pegu

The SS Nautalis is forced to the surface due to ASW attack and does better as a surface ship than as a submarine. Good shooting boys!!

NJP performs an amphibious assault on Pegu and takes the base this turn without opposition. I think his assault on Burma is going to go flawlessly!! Rangoon falls tomorrow or the next day and I can stop losing a point of VP finally.

There are naval forces off the coast of Diego Garcia. I am not sure if NJP has any idea that I have a heavy cruiser parked there. From what I see he has a task force of a cruiser and destroyer (likely the surface task force I saw before) and 6 ships with 4 CS ships. I am guessing that is a mini-KB. We are going to find out because I put the heavy cruiser surface group on high speed and headed directly to the AF task force through the surface task force.

If it is the forces he had recently in the area I am likely to take a beating but hopefully it will work both ways and also keep his attention for a few critical days.

NJP cleverly puts a minefield at Geraldton to keep my subs out.

RE: What could possibly go wrong? Wargamr(A) vs njp72(J)

Post by Mike McCreery »

February 17, 1942

The allies won a tactical naval victory today off the coast of Diego Garcia. A task force consisting of the CA Dorsetshire, CL Concord and 4 destroyers go up against a Japanese Battleship and several heavy cruisers.

During the course of the battle the BB Fuso takes 3 torpedoes and a Japanese heavy cruiser takes another one.

Meanwhile, back at the ranch.... It appears that one of NJP's submarines detected my AF carrier TF at Bombay. So much for that surprise. 2 carriers sailed in through Diego Garcia and arrived at Bombay for refulling yesterday. The AF carriers will be protecting reinforcements arriving from Aden and conducting shipping raids along the Indian coast and Ceylon.

The 164th infantry regiment should arrive at Sydney tomorrow for transport to Melbourne where it will combine with the 2 other regiments of the Americal division.

My forces completely moved out of Sian and are trying to shock attack his forces. I have all my pathetic Chineese bombers trying to ensure he doesnt get out of the hex NW of Sian but I might be a day late.

Either way it is now a fighting retreat to the capital.

Allied Bases Captured

Salem (again)

NJP attempts an air attack against Diego Garcia and finds 3 squadrons of fighters to his dismay. I dont think he knew about them. He loses a bunch of planes and hopefully some good pilots.

I attempt to shock attack NJP NW of Sian and lose over 13,000 troops including almost 1000 squads... OUCH!

Allied Bases Captured

Rangoon

It was another great day for the Allied naval forces.

NJP had not one but two more STF's led by battleships. They encountered my light cruiser group and several destroyer groups. I think the rain played a large part in the outcome of the battles.

The first combat involved the BB Mutsu, CA Myoko and the CL Kitakami along with a DD escort. The Japanese naval forces were surprised and the first salvo included 2 torpedoes that went into the side of the Mutsu.

The DD O'Brien was sunk during the action.

The next engagement was between the BB Kongo with the CA Nachi and a DD Escort versus my CL group. I put the CA in the port to rest up which turned out to be a mistake.

The third combat was a little lopsided in the Japanese favor but that is obviously to be expected.

The Kongo and escorts stumble onto another ASW group and sink 2 DD's to 1 of their own. By this time the CA Nachi seems to have the fires under control.
