New Scenario for Testing: In the calmest waters swim the ugliest fish (1985)

Post by Pergite! »

Hi!

This is a beta release for a short and not that complex "peace-time" mission set during the cold war.
Any inputs would be helpful for the final release since this is my firs real attempt on mission making for Command.

Hints:
-Micro-management is very useful, especially of the dipping sonar (thanks for adding that command in the latest update).
-Read up on the capabilities of the few assets you have at you disposal so that you use them correctly.

In the calmest waters swim the ugliest fish (1985)

Sweden vs USSR (Littoral ASW)

Background

The submarine hunts or submarine incidents were a series of several incidents involving foreign submarines that occurred in Swedish territorial waters during the Cold War, more specifically during the 1980s. In this time, there was intensive debate and speculation in Swedish media about the possibility of Soviet submarine infiltration of Swedish territorial waters.

The Swedish navy responded aggressively to these perceived threats, increasing patrols in Swedish waters, mining and electronically monitoring passages, and repeatedly chasing and attacking suspected submarines with depth charge bombs, but no hits or casualties were offically ever recorded.

Reports of new submarine sightings and television imagery of Swedish Navy helicopters firing depth charges into coastal waters against suspected intruders became commonplace in the mid-to-late 1980s. They remain, for many Swedes, one of the iconic images of the Cold War and of the Swedish relation to the Soviet Union—for some underlining what was considered a major threat to Swedish sovereignty.

Scenario setting

This scenario takes place on 1 May 1985. You are acting commander of the Swedish West Naval Command (Marinkommando Väst) with HQ in Gothenburg, the port of Scandinavia. Its a national holiday and limited forces are currently available through out the country.

Two patrol vessels HMS Modig and HMS Munter are out in the Kategatt, conducing vessel traffic controll along the heavily trafficed shipping route between Sweden and Denmark. Alert figher jets are standing by at Såtenäs airbase, and the helicopters are being readied at Säve airbase. Except for the officers, all other ranks throughout your organization are manned by conscripts.

Comment on some initial feedback:

The scenario provides you with snippets of intel. They point you in the right directions and give you clues, but its up to you to draw conclusions on where to task you limited sensors. Read the messages given through events and try to think of what the information actually mean, and how you should use it.

Interesting scenarios. Only minor issue is, that is possible to play for Natural side.

Thank you, appropriate checkbox unchecked.

The neutral side is probably a bit boring to play. But on the other hand, people apparently both actually buy and enjoy different train-, farm- and etc. simulator games. [:D]

Not a comment on the scenario(s) but I just wanted to say that that's an awesome picture!

Ahhh!! Just played this and found it very frustrating (and I mean that in a good way [:D] ) I need to rethink my approach I believe. Good challenge.

From the v1.02 release notes:
You can now manually order a helicopter to hover and use its dipping sonar if it has one. The key combination is Shift+D.

Good to hear!

I could possibly make it more random, but it would take a lot of effort to get it to synch with corresponding message actions.

Nice scenario [:)] (although I believe that Ola Tunander is right about the submarine intrusions). The 48. ptrbdiv won it for me while researching for this message [:D]

EXPENDITURES:
------------------
1x Tp 422
1x RB 12 Penguin Mk2

I'd suggest that you rename HMS Mode from P 151 Hugin to P 154 Mode. You could also change the names of the helicopters to "Yngve" something (Y 67, Y 68, Y 69, Y 70, Y 72 and Y 76 were based at Säve (from Skipper))

You could also consider adding a Depth Charge Rack [8 DC] for the Hugins?

Thanks for the research! I will change the designations and try to add some depth-charges.

Spoilers:

Regarding Tunander: There aren't just soviet submarines active in the scenario [8D]

I was sidetracked on something bigger, but I will put on some finishing touches and send it to wherever the community scenarios go! [;)]

Unless there is some additional feedback?
