Even though there were ore escorts set than strike planes, a lot of strikes looked like this, which didn't work well at all. No more LBA made it through the CAP, but I suppose they wore it down for what came next.

This is the first and only big KB strike of the day, and it did well. Lots of planes came in late and were creamed, but some luckily chose to turn back, so not all of the strike planes were lost. Our Sams here really cut through the Allied defenses again, in spite of about 600 Corsairs and Spits on CAP. [:)]

These guys mostly targeted CVEs, which is too bad. A few attacks did go against the Randolf and Implacable, and a few CVLs, but about 20 CVEs were hit hard enough to be sunk or in sinking condition, so not too bad. [;)]

Then came the hard part to watch as about 100 strike panes came in alone to their doom.

The Allied strikes finally came late in the morning phase. They are massive and well coordinated. The CAP was fantastic, with all kinds of LBA supporting, but nothing was going to keep all of these planes out.

A few CVs were put out of commission and this of course meant the afternoon strikes were smaller.

The CAP fought them on the way out too, getting a good bunch of strike planes. The Allies lost nearly 1,000 planes on the day! [X(]

The Japanese of course still lost more with the LBA included. About 1,200 no the day!

The afternoon KB strike was anemic and couldn't get more than a few planes through to add to the morning's devastation.

In a side note, our strikes at Moppo tank fully went in again today, and found some stragglers at the base. The fighters actually were able to get up as well, but these strikes came with a healthy escort and punched through easily to close the airfield again.

The afternoon Allied strike was smaller, but still big enough to get through the very hefty CAP over the KB.

Kaga was hit hard, and Katsuragi as well. These later strikes were really the most important for the Allies, and changed the battle in their favor.

Some of the later strikes did get a few planes through and they mostly hit the CVEs, putting those down for good.

Amazingly, this TF was virtually untouched, apart from one hit on Akagi. The air groups are wrecked of course, but there is the possibility of flying more planes on for tomorrow. I'll have to assess whether a second day strike attempt is a good idea as I look at he bases, air groups and positions of the fleets.

Here are the air losses for the day. Wow! Better for us this time, but still a lot of planes downed. Glad the Allies lost so many as tomorrow could get interesting.

Here is the current list of Allied ships lost for June 1. I think it will end up being 20-22 CVE sunk.

THE GREAT BATTLE OF 1 JUNE, 1945
___________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

SUBS: Subs played no part in anything today.

KOREA: This is a bold move by the Allies, and asserts their intentions of really fighting it out for the troops on Korea and for the Moppo invasion. Not that I doubted they would, but this changes the situation dramatically. Still, the possible 8 hex strike is viable for the future of our remaining KB, and combined with a much stronger LBA for June 2, could give the Allies trouble. We'll see.

The battle is fairly even in terms of outcome. It's too bad most of the strikes going for fleet CVs missed their targets. Flak was effective for the Allies, and at least 5-6 flights of Judy missed the bigger flattops. The one hit on CV Intrepid is critical though as it was a Grace kami that produced an ammo storage explosion message. That likely means serious damage. Enough at least to need shipyard time. So 20-22 CVEs taken out plus a CV sidelined is not too bad for this point in the war, especially since the Allies still haven't opened Moppo or gotten reinforcements in.

There is a chance they're going to move in force tomorrow. That would be ideal, but I now have to decide if I commit the IJN surface forces or just the LBA. I hesitate to lose the bombardment option by naval forces as the bombing can be sporadic due to weather and slowed if the Allied CVs settle in close.

STRAT BOMBING: None.

HOME ISLANDS: A division heading to Fusan has it's convoy struck as CAP was tired and out of position late in the afternoon phase. Two transports sunk, but there is still 20k supply and most of the troops are fine on the bigger ships, docked and unloading now.

It'll take a while to set this turn up. A lot of decisions to make. A lot of air groups to get ready.

CHINA: The IJA in China is in trouble, but the focus is farther North of Japanese command. These orders ware given knowing what could happen. Some units are being flown from Formosa to shore up the Shanghai area, even though there is little to no supply here.

Also in the news, Hong Kong falls. Kweiyang is also over-run once the Commonwealth troops made it in and probably also opened a supply path to the Chinese. They still take 20k+ casualties. China is in the endgame. It will all be Allied by the end of June 45 I predict.

CAP engaged:
VF-7 with F4U-1D Corsair (20 airborne, 10 on standby, 4 scrambling)
20 plane(s) intercepting now.
6 plane(s) not yet engaged, 0 being recalled, 0 out of immediate contact.
Group patrol altitude is 10000 , scrambling fighters between 6000 and 39300.
Time for all group planes to reach interception is 38 minutes Some groups had long full group intercept times, although a lot were already in position, likely due to none being higher than 10k. Our strikes were all set to 15k today, which is a bit of a switch from previous practice. I've been going in at 10k for all of the other recent battles. [;)]

This is interesting. Haven't hit that yet, or seen evidence of it there. Hmmmmm.

Wow looks like another carnage in your favor IMHO.

At this time in the war, what do you need carriers for? CV planes from land bases will not be quite as effective as a good CV fleet, but still get the same job done. The only disadvantage is that the less CVs you got, the less of his own he needs to divert to hunt em down.

Congrats on the fight you are putting up at this stage.

Thanks. A fun one again.

Using the beta the CV strikes are still the most useful to punch through the big Allied CAP. One of the goals of my aggressive positioning of the KB has been to lessen the number of CV/CVE in the near term, so to limit the CAP that will face LBA strikes.

While we did lose about half of the KB and many more top notch pilots, the Allied losses in airframes, pilots and decks should cut their CAP in half and limit possibilities for LR CAP over reinforcement forces to Moppo. The LBA will have to step up now, and hopefully we can follow up before the Allies have a chance to replenish. Any of he CVE or CV Intrepid and VL Princeton that were damaged should still be in range tomorrow.

There is also a strange grouping of what look to be supply shipping around the Chinese coast. There is a lot that could be spread out to cover tomorrow, and with no air base in range, our fresh LBA groups will go against a tired but expert Allied CV CAP.

Here is a map. Obviously if the Allies go to Moppo everything on map will try to hit them. If they choose to make for safety to replenish, a lot of transports, plus some damaged ships, won't be able to completely make it into safe LR CAPed island territory tomorrow. If the CVs do stay with them they may have to spread out to deal with various speeds, or slow down and stay in the main firing range around Southern Korea. I'll pop a few things over to Taihoku and the Chinese coast to see if they can nail something shying away from the Japanese main bases.
