I am trying to generate some surface combats to slow down his push into the Shortlands area as his Carriers are else where. While I missed the landing in the Shortlands I did kill a CM that was trying to do something I would not have liked.

The area around Davao, not looking good as his moved very fast into the area and caught me before I could consolidate the forces.

In the Philippines I have not been able to get any hard data on this six units but within the next six days I expect him to hit my link in Clark.

We should have around 40K of mainly combat units in Clark next turn (fort 1 + 10%), 40K of mostly combat units in Bataan (Fort 2 + 14%) and around 12K of mostly HQ units in Manila (Fort 0 + 10%). The stacking limit is 40K at Clark and 45K at Bataan. The hope is to be able to rotate units so they stay fresh at Clark but we will see.

He has started the landing at Kuantan, we had just evacuated this turn (not sure if it was the right call or not). He has a large number of BBs and CAs here for support but we were gone. The fall back to Singapore goes well and Mersing is still held but a brigade of Assuies --- they will fall back soon but I don't want him landing this far south just yet. My Air Force did a number on the ships landing the question on the table is do I keep trying to hit the landing as I expect he will send in LRCAP????

RE: This will End Badly Rook749 vs AirGriff

Post by rook749 »

It seems this turn there was a dramatic increase in effective torpedo, The Emperor even went so far as to lodge an official complaint with the League of Nations through Switzerland.

"You should have a chat with your ordinance people in Manila. They appear to be slipping torps WITHOUT that fabulous magnetic exploder to your subs."

In other news....

The United States Navy just completed a moral and welfare visit to the USSR by the second in ranking officer and second ranking NCO from all Navel Fleet commands. There was a unscheduled cultural exchange at an undisclosed Siberian gulag where Naval personnel had lunch with the former soviet torpedo technicians and current rock breaking technicians.

Combined Fleet Sighted.......

Seems After the raid at Peal the KB withdrew northwest of Wake to bomb the island and has just appears Northeast of Christmas Island. Burn that fuel baby and rack of some system damage. Air Griff pulled a neat trick with the subs and and them warped to Peal turn one and then move to this area for this operation, I can only assume this has been the plan from Turn 1.

At this point there neither Palmyra (Base Art & USN Std Base Force) nor Christmas (Std Base Force) can hold if he plans to land in force. Renforcements for both hexes and larger amounts of fuel and supply for Christmas are four days out near Pearl and have been held in place. If its just a raid we will let it roll through and the release them to continue to there bases.

The Enterprise is one hex north of Malden Island after moving south due to the large submarine activity in and around Christmas Island. It will withdraw to San Diego and meet a replenishment task force in route.

The Saratago was two days out of Christmas Island and will be routed to meet the Enterprise.

There are four P-40E's at Christmas Island and two more Fighter Squadrons in route with the reinforcements [:@]. Not sure if we would have spotted this or not with the PBY's but the KB hit a small AKL task force and gave me a solid lock. I have one squRD ON PBY's at Palmyra and two at Christmas hunting the subs. Two of these will be running away (maybe three). The three ASW task forces will withdraw to San Diego. All Submarines have been routed to this area.

Now that you've got a clear idea of where the KB is (or at least a sizable chunk of it), any plans for a quick raid elsewhere?

As someone who plays mainly Japan, there's plenty of trouble a quick "cut-and-run" can acomplish in the Gilberts, or even at Truk. What's worse is that the in-theater assets are poor - Truk only has Claudes for CAP on Dec 7th!

I am trying to finds something fun I can do to him as I have the mini-KB and KB located. I have turned the entire DD/CL/CA forces around and I am going to engage the landings around the Shortlands but....

My Carrier Forces were six days from being ready to do anyreal deep operations out of Christmas Islands but his operation will set that back a bit as I had to hold the AO and supplies till the KB passes. The Lexington is at Dutch harbor and is about ten days from its replenishment task force to allow a deep raid.... But Next Time, Next Time.....

Other than that so far this is not much I can seem to be able to do but I will keep looking.

Overview of Dec 16th - 17th

Main KB: Sited North West of Christimeas Island. All inbound convoys held, both carries in the area head to San Diego....

Mini-KB: Last sighted one day ago at South West of Davao location: 71,94. Due to the air operations this has run I suspect it withdrew to Turk to resupply and will next head to the Rabaul area.

Lexington: At Dutch Harbor, Renames USN Car Div 2 and RADM Spruance given command. Will pause for this turn for fuel to unload and refuel the ships and then depart to the Wake Area to see if I can catch anything at sea. There is a replenishment task force in route to Dutch harbor that is six days out that may or may not follow.

Enterprise: South of Christmas Island. Appears to be undetected. There are a large number of submarines plus the KB - running away.

Saratoga: 18 hexes Christmas Island. Appears to be undetected. There are a large number of submarines plus the KB - running away.

The overall plan to hold the Philippines and Singapore seems to still be intact. No progress for him at Wake, fast supply transport in route as the KB has been sited.

Small supply transport to Midway and a mine field will also be put in place here.

All Southwest pacific surface forces are going to sweep the sea around Rabual for the next five days and then fall back.

ENG unit and supply in route to Horn Island. Supply convoy in rout to Port Morsbey.

Shuffling units to the islands around Pearl and hope for the best. At this point it hard to tell what he may be up to but for some reason I am thinking OZ.

I wish I could do more as the KB and Mini-KB are located but I am just not ready to smash back just yet....

Japan can't be strong everywhere at once. The Lexington is at Dutch Harbour. Why not detach some of her escorting destroyers, and send them west in to the Kuriles and raid Japanese shipping, or even better, bombard the oil on Sakhalin?

In all likelyhood, you'll waste some fuel and only sink a couple of small merchantmen. At worse, you'll lose some very expendable destroyers. At best you'll rattle your opponent in to diverting resources for the Kuriles to stop them and damage the oil production. If he doesn't, do the same again in a few months time, but send crusiers as well.

I was looking at hitting the LI at Kushiro but your idea might just be better[:D], I have to pause for this turn as I am pretty much out of fuel for the entire task force at Dutch Harbor as I had to take a wide detour around the KB that followed me NE from Wake (or at least was checking to see if something was in the area). But next turn I will split the task force and distract him with the CV and bombard the oil with the DDs or at least see if I can bag a merchantmen or two.

Why risk the Lex? Send her to Seattle where she'll be safe under land-based air cover until the KB departs or you combine your carriers. Sending her along is too much risk for what is a drop in the ocean of Japan's possible oil production.

For the purposes of raiding, the destroyers will be enough, and the distraction comes from the raid itself, not the ships you commit to it.

Sorry it seems that I was not very clear on my thoughts. The Task force the Lex is part of is at 15 ships. My thoughts are to take 3 -6 DDs out of this and hit the oil and then send the carrier north of Wake to sink the second invasion task force that should hit Wake as the 1st one did not succeed. My goal would be to keep the Lex north or Wake undetected unless this force shows up before the KB disappears.

Some Quick comments before I have to go back to work for the the night....

The Combined Fleet withdrew to four hexes northeast of Canton with only killing one xAKL that war part of the thundering heard and the my two DD raid from Singapore worked really well as it generated some nice air battles at sea.

RE: This will End Badly Rook749 vs AirGriff

Post by rook749 »

We are up to the 22nd and another turn should be completed tonight, I have been tied up so I have not been able to post but here quick summary.

The Combined Fleet turned around after covering a landing at Canton, as did my carrier forces. My carries are now set to run northeast towards a replenishment task force 24 hexes from Christmas Island and should stay out of the range of combat. One Navy fighter Unit and one Marine Unit are now on Christmas Island to join the 4 P-40Es.

We have decided to send in the reinforcements that two land at both Christmas Island and Palmyra in the teeth of KB (assuming it moved north) as there is a small invasion task force that has been spotted. Palmyra has a marine def art in route and Christmas an air, air hq, and port base unit. Its not a lot but I hope with the level 1 forts at each it will be enough. Three DDs forces (4 DDs each) have also been sent to Christmas Island under the air cover to hold off the landings (we hope).

Another Marine Def Art is in route to wake under the Lexington CV Task force. We are going to see if we can get anything else to land there as well. One CA and two DDs were slpit off the Lexington CV force and will bombard Shikuka to hit the oil.

We are looking to see what we could get into Rabul as he is busy everywhere else. Even if these units can make it in time we can re-route them to Port Morseby.

All other fronts holding......
