March 28, 1942

YAY!!! Supply went from 19 to over 50,000 in 1 turn at Kalgoorlie. The game is back on!!

Every available flak and artillery unit with flack is OTW to Kalgoorlie. I have a division plus tanks heading for Esperance. The push back for SW Australia has already begun.

4 or so squadrons of P40E's are unloading at Sydney for transport to CAP the front.

Plans are being formulated to assault Addu Island, North Male Island, Tulagi, Maleolap, Horn Island, Port Moresby, etc. A large contingent of troops and equipment are headed for Adak Island to build a base for northern operations. I will put a sub base on Attu as well if I get a chance.

In India, NJP has been largely unsucessful in doing anything useful. His army is between Madras and Calcutta on the coast. Since he abandoned the plan to take Madras I do not think he will be able to take Bombay or Calcutta as Calcutta is over 1200AV with hundreds of thousands of tons of supplies. I am not sure if he will continue to try to push it here.

I have the 6th & 7th Australian divisions combined and in 3 days the 70th British division shows up and they have 80EXP!! Add to that the tank regiment and I have a significant stack to oppose whatever NJP wants to try in India. I think his best move is to get the troops out of there but what do I know...

In Australia he owns Perth, Geraldton, Cunderdin and the other minor bases along the coast. I already have 400 AV headed for Esperance. Once I get all the flack there (over 120 guns within a few days). I will set up some deadly CAP and then start to move toward cunderdin with most of the rest of the troops.

He managed to take Perth but didnt get any significant supplies nor fuel out of it. He didnt get any in India either. I would say that since he didnt surround and kill any significant amounts of troops that both expeditions failed.

It will leave him shorter on fuel and supplies and not really good in the point category. He has over 13K while I still have 9K. This is mostly due to the fact that he has not attempted to attack Singapore nor any of Luzon. He will likely have to move his troops from India and Australia to take those bases.

I hope to put up an overview soon. His Amphib bonus is almost run out.

Pardon the sloppy AAR but the game is going fast and furious and I would rather play than write about it although both are fun!!

We have passed a critical time ending with the Japanese Amphibious assault bonus (I am not even sure what the bonus is). Overall I would say the war is going good. I will cover the theatres in detail in the next several posts.

NJP has been beating Diego Garcia as much as possible with bombardments by his battleships and cruisers. I have managed to deploy 75 mines with more on the way but it did not interfere with 2 STF forces bombarding last turn. On the down side he is beating on the 18th division and the replacement squads are few and far between. He is also dusting a good number of fighters and other aircraft. I am not as irritated as before however even though my subs have been largely ineffective and nothing else seems to work properly.

The good side is that he is blowing a lot of supply and fuel running the BB's back and forth from somewhere nearby along with having the mini-KB hanging out. In about a month I will have a solution to some of this as invasions are in the works. I think he is paying way too much attention to Diego. In the meanwhile I have had almost unrestricted access to the north shipping lanes from Aden to Karachi so there is not much to move to the continent.

The Indian continent has been frustrating so far for NJP. He has not managed to capture a major city up to this point and his current movements indicate he may have given up with the exception of Calcutta.

Since Kalgoorlie fell to the Allies it has been reinforced with every flak and artillery piece available. The drive is on to take back Esperance and move back toward Perth.

The arctic has been completely quiet and the pacific ocean quiet as well. Adak is now a beehive of Activity with troops and supplies flowing to the base. Within 2 weeks it will have over 250 AV of troops and support units to start developing my northern attack strategy.

NJP has been largely ineffective at interdicting my convoys and fuel is flowing into Australia on both the east and south coast.

My carriers have been in refit and most will be fully operational within a week. There are 2 in the IO tasked to the amphibous landings in a month or so. There are another at Australia that are not currently assigned and the other one is in Los Angeles in preparation for transit to Pearl Harbor.

One possibility is to fake an amphibious assault on Perth to attempt to draw the KB from whatever hole it is hiding in. Then make the amphibious assaults. Also there is a possibility that attacks can be made on the Marshall islands at the same time as attacks in the IO. We shall see. I need PP's to buy out about 3 divisions yet. I am behind compared to my other game and it might be due to the Dutch units I bought out and using a lot more PP's for leader changes.

NJP has been almost completely frustrated in India so far

He took Ceylon with no opposition and then moved troops to Vizig(whatever) in the center of the south Indian coast. From there he spread out both east and west. I managed to thwart many of his movements and get 1500 AV into Madras when he thought there were only 500 AV. He managed to get enough in to stop my plans to kill him. However, during this time I cut the rail supply to vizig(whatever) and that took him out of supply.

Eventually he started moving his forces east and we end up where we are today. He has 30 units with an undetermined amount of AV although I would say that it exceeds 1500 AV easily. This is just NW of Calcutta.

In Calcutta I have 1200 AV behind lvl 4 forts. The AV is mostly small indian and british units. I am hoping it is enough to prevent any surprises. You can see by the number of guns that many of the mountain gun, flak and artillery are also in the city. He will get a real surprise in counter-battery fire if he chooses to siege the city.

He recently had units as far west as Bezwada but now they all seem to have strat moved into the huge pile near Calcutta. I have 4 units converging on the base for a total of about 500 AV. The plan for that stack is to take Bezwada and then start to move east along the rail line.

On the road just SW of Jamshedpur I have 245 AV in an infantry and an armor unit moving south along the road to cut the rail line just East of Cuttack. In Jamshedpur I have the 6th and 7th Australian divisions along with some artillery and the 70th british division is on the way by strat move. That will give me over 1200 AV of 70+ exp troops to maneuver against NJP.

It appears that if I cut the rail line east of Vizig(whatever) that he will be out of supply as there is no other land base. Now, he has captured all of Burma and will shortly capture Chittagong but that base has a limit on supply draw (1800). So I am wondering if this is going to put him in a bind or not. He might just walk the whole stack into Burma but I doubt he is going to give up India just yet.

The battle for SW Australia is shifting back to attack.

I have a division plus 5 armor units and some AA heading toward Esperance. I am not sure where his main force is but I am guessing Perth, Geraldton or maybe Cunderdin.

Fighting hard over Perth is a strategic Japanese mistake in my opinion. I have destroyed a regiment of troops plus attrited a lot more. Most of the battles have been one sided in NJP's favor however, these troops in Australia are restricted and fighting in Australia just allows the Allies to attrit the Japanese with forces that may have never entered the war otherwise.

Also, there is no oil nor other resources and it cannot be held indefinitely.

He may still try an end around amphibious assault so I have about 800 AV at Port Augusta in case.

The plan here is simple. Capture Esperance and move the main body of the army to Cunderdin. Secure Cunderdin and then Perth. If NJP still has over 3 divisions here it should be quite the battle.

I've been following this AAR and have been particularly struck by the unjustified, upbeat, dare I say over confident assessments of the Allied player.

No.  That is not how logistics operates.  Supply can still flow if he retains ports/bases west of Vizagapatnam.  Furthermore he will soon open up a far superior eastern LOC between supply depots and the frontline.

You seem quite complacent about losing Chittagong, having already lost all of Burma.
 
The short answer is that he will not be in a bind.  In fact his strategy will be working perfectly; and that strategy does not involve giving up India. 
 
3.  Whether it has been intentional or accidental, and I very much suspect it has been the former, your opponent has engaged in a very good logistical campaign in both India and Australia and you have fallen for it hook, line and sinker.
 
4.  When Japan captures Singapore and the Luzon bases, you are going to see a massive shift in VPs towards Japan.  That he already has a 14.4k to 9.2k VP lead (two months ago gametime you had a 500 VP lead) without those conquests means that Japan is in an excellent position to achieve an auto victory at the earliest possible date (=1 January 1943).
 
5.  He doesn't need the Amphibious Bonus anymore.  He doesn't need to launch any further beach invasions against strategically important targets.  He can just walk there.
 
6.  "Fighting hard over Perth is a strategic Japanese mistake in my opinion. I have destroyed a regiment of troops plus attrited a lot more. Most of the battles have been one sided in NJP's favor however, these troops in Australia are restricted and fighting in Australia just allows the Allies to attrit the Japanese with forces that may have never entered the war otherwise."

Another example, of the many, where you have miscalculated the long term consequences.  there will come a time when you will regret losing all those Australian devices and squads and thereby lacking the auto upgrading of pool obsolete squads.
 
 
In short, your opponent may be playing with only an eye out for 1 January 1943 but that is considerably further out than you are.

Thank you for the advice about the pool obsolete squads. As I have never played this game against a human past July of 1942 there are many things I simply do not know.

If NJP wins in January of 1943 I will tip my hat to a superior player. I am learning a lot about the game and have a great teacher.

April 7, 1942

As if to underline Alfreds statements the KB shows up and smashes 2 large groups of cargo ships, and there are landings at Noumea and Cairns. The warships were smoking so he has been putting them to some pretty hard use without any rest and repairs.

I guess I live in interesting times.

My faith has wavered. I am going to give up Kalgoorlie and move the troops back to the east coast of Australia to hold there. Once that is done then Perth is lost for another 6 months and he has 1100 AV free to move about the map but I dont know what else to do.

I think it's time to begin concentrating on VPs for your part. He's going to take those VP troves in the DEI sometime. You should add up how much of a VP swing that will be (+VPs for him, -VPs for you) and see where that leaves you. That's before LCUs and any air units/ships lost as well.

I wouldn't be surprised if you come up with something around 3.5 or 3.7 to 1.

So how can you boost your side of the VP calculation before 1/1/43 (really before 11/1/42, I'd say) without relying on sinking KB or other major IJN combat forces? You need valuable ground.

Noumea, for example, is a big VP multiplier for the Allies, but I'm not sure you can hold it right now. So you may need to plan to take it back before '42 is out.

The big goal for 1942 is to take Ceylon back. I have plans to capture Male and Addu in about a month and if that goes well then I can plan to assault the island from multiple locations.

Noumea is going on the list along with anything else he takes. I have fortified Canton and Christmas islands along with a few others but did not touch Noumea or Suva as I feared he could easily take them if he wanted to. The KB still rules the seas.

Honestly, I am doing the best I can and trying everything I know. Maybe pulling out of Burma completely was a bad idea but the extra forces in India are causing NJP trouble. I just hit one of his troops today and it was low on supply. That is a good indicator he needs to get an LOC up and running before other things. Every little bit of time helps on my side.

Counting points is not going to fix the problems I have with them. Planning attacks like on Noumea will help. Time to set up a whole new set of invasions.
