New Scenario for testing - Operation Spitfire 1991

Post by Maromak »

Date: 13 November 1991.

Location: Timor Sea

Playable Sides: Australia

Introduction

This scenario is a fictional aftermath following the actual Santa Cruz massacre which occurred on 12 November 1991 in Dili, East Timor/Timor Leste.

Santa Cruz massacre

During the tragic events of 12 November, a visiting delegation of Portuguese diplomats, UN Special Rapporteur for Human Rights on Torture UN, and a number of western journalists were killed (false although some journalists were seriously injured). These events along with the killing of at least 250 Timorese provoked a mass outbreak of violence by the residents of Dili arming themselves with rocks and improvised weapons.

As of 13 November 1991, the fighting continues in Dili between ABRI (Indonesian Armed Forces) and Timorese militia groups. The UN Security Council has passed Resolution 1272 calling for the immediate cessation of armed conflict in East Timor and the deployment of peace-making forces '..to provide security and maintain law and order throughout the territory of East Timor.'

Following the passing of the UNSC resolution, the Australian Defence Force (ADF) has commenced preparations to deploy forces to East Timor.

As usual, any feedback will be greatly appreciated.

Interesting set up, but there wouldn't have been an Australian embassy in Dili given that Australia regarded East Timor as being an Indonesian province at the time. I doubt that there was a consulate or any other presence in the city. I also question the order of battle: if most of the RAN had been moved to the waters off northern Australia to operate against Indonesia and the Government had authorised combat drops of paratroopers and special forces units, RAAF units would also have been transferred at about the same time, so making players re-position them seems to be an unrealistic chore. As a minor note, No. 292 Squadron doesn't have any Orions permanently assigned to it (it uses No. 10 and 11 Squadron aircraft), and there's no way that its trainee crews would be deployed as part of a shooting war, so I'd suggest dropping this unit. The same applies to No. 2 Operational Conversion Unit and (to a lesser extent) No. 6 Squadron, though those two units do have their own aircraft.
