[DONE] Simple scenario for comments: Kiwi Strike

Post by NickD »

Hello everyone. As my first submission, I've created a simple scenario modelling the training exercises which the squadron of Royal New Zealand Air Force A-4K Skyhawks stationed at HMAS Albatross south of Sydney regularly conducted against Royal Australian Navy frigates between 1991 and 2001. Both the frigate and the Skyhawks (which were modified through the Kahu project) turned out to be more capable than I expected, and it's interesting to compare this scenario to those depicting Argentine Skyhawk attacks on British ships: the stand-off capability provided by the Skyhawks' Maverick missiles makes a lot of difference, but the aircraft remain very vulnerable to the frigate's air defences.

I'd appreciate any comments on this scenario, and hope that you enjoy it.

(Edit: final version of the scenario uploaded)

nice work

run through 1. let the AI do an auto attack at low alt. on the FFG, hit with 3 mavericks but lost all A-4's. Silly Ai tried to jump to max alt. just before missile attack. I has split force so one A-4 came in low fromthe south andtheothe 4 at low alt from the north.

run through 2. manual attack run, military power 550 knots at 70 metre height, hit with all maverick, FFG a flaming/sinking wreck.. off for beers in the mess ..... huzahh. The FFGfired a few SAMs but none hit

I tried it out. Good work. Nice short scenario where you have to manage your aircraft to win. What finally worked was that after spotting the ship at a distance, I dropped to 60 m altitude and turned the radar off and searched until I spotted the ship again and then stayed low until the last moment, then popped up to 300 meters to launch missiles. I got progressively better as I played...

Attempt 1: "Disaster"--all aircraft lost; frigate unharmed
Attempt 2: See above
Attempt 3: "Disaster"--three aircraft lost and the frigate was only heavily damaged
Attempt 4: "Triumph"--frigate destroyed; only one aircraft lost

Nicely done, all looks good and probably done unless I'm mistaken?
Thought I was being clever and was going to do it on the first attempt.
Nicely balanced and my first attempt was a bit of a shock to the system, a disaster rescued from what I thought was a winning position.
Managed it on the next one, but you have to get it just right.

Hey NickD,

As an old (literally) harpooner, this kind of scenario reminds me of a lot of the "jellybeans" we used to be tasked with pitting one set of units against another for a specific purpose. In fact, I believe this scenario would be perfect for any CMANO beginner to try as it teaches a number of basics tasks whether playing manually or allowing the AI to do it (e.g finding/plotting the enemy's location, knowing weapons parameters, avoiding enemy counterattack, et al).

Great job!
