hello,

are you using the Beta version to TOAW3.4.....?
that's the only version I have seen where the planes attack their own bases.
The regular TOAW3 never behaved like that.... I did a fair amount of testing.

Which scenario and the best way to prevent Elmer doing it is to gain air-superiority. Off-map airfields are not off-limits to attacks, they just represent airfields that are a distance away, hence off-map.

Yes, my Version is 3.4.0.202.

This happens for example at the classic Scenario "Kasserine 43". I play as Allies. The AI (Germans) Starts. The computer attacks in the first round several times on my airfields. When it's my turn, I have no more aircraft to gain air-superiority. Similarly, in the classic Scenario "Sicily 43" as German.

yes, that also happened to me in another scenario that I am designing. Although I program the air units with orders of combat support or interdiction, when i start the scenario the side controlled by de IA automatically attacks my air units in their airfields, and only when all my air units are destroyed, the IA assume support/interdiction orders.

In Anzio (2km version) i used a trick and set the off-map airfield hexes to such a distance that both side's airforces cannot reach each other's airfields but all hexes on the actual map. I had also to edit aircraft ranges as it would not have worked with different ranges. It was the only solution to prevent an airfield - airfield war. Admittedly the situation/geography of the scenario was fortunate as there were no airfields on the map that were actually used, the German airfields are located in central and northern Italy, in southern France and the Balkans while the Allied airforces were located around Naples. I did the same in 'Nijmegen 44' which however has a very abstracted 'air department'.

If you are designing, try putting some static AAA Units on the Airfields. If you are playing, look for some AAA Units to put on the Airfields. Sometimes Elmer is afraid of Ack-Ack.
