Tea? I have a very good idea I want all of you posters to come to South Philadelphia for a philly cheese steak at Pat's Steak house at 9th and Wharton, be warned, come armed it is where the Italian Mafia hangs out [;)] Steve knows Pats well hes been there many times. After 10 pm it gets so crowded people sit on the curbs for a block around Pats eating cheese steaks

I'm a little confused. Should i get a Pepsi or a Coca Cola with that steak? Based on the photo, guessing coke lost the turf war.

You got good eyes Warhunter I did not see that, I think when the Irish mob controlled that area you had to drink coke, now the Italian Mafia controls that area and they own the Pepsi plant need I say more [:-] Another thing you dont ask those kind of questions at 9th & Wharton or you just might vanish into the night[:D]

RE: Two Map Scenarios
I lived in Philly for 26 years. When the Challenger fell out of the sky I was walking over to the Italian Market (9th and Wharton is in the heart of the Italian Market) to buy some fresh vegetables and fruit. I know exactly where I was standing when I heard that news.
There were a lot of stories about mob hits in the newspapers while I lived in Philly. The discovery of two bodies in the trunk of a car one very hot summer is most memorable. It was the smell that made people suspicious.[X(]

This is not a caesar salad place believe me, the picture you see is looking south on 9th street 2 blocks the other way [north] starts the Italian open market district looking a lot like the open air markets in Palermo Sicily. If you remember the Rocky Balboa [Rocky] movie this is the street he ran down when he was training past Pats steaks and the open market.
Some say he stopped for a cheese steak but I dont believe that as he was in training to fight Apollo Creed, and that cheese steak would have been a nono. [:-] The Bada Bings were about 10 blocks away near 11th and Snyder avenue close to the South Philadelphia bar and grille.
A not so funny story about that bar and grille, a waitress tells a story about a midwesterner visiting the area to watch his team play the Phila Eagles took his friends there to eat the Italian food that it was well known for. He was drinking pretty heavy and then he stood up and loudly asked the patrons where all of these so called Mafiaosos goons were, he wanted to see them.
Sitting two booths away was Nicky Scarfo [Bloodiest mafia boss in the history of Phila] and some of his under bosses and a few of his Capo's. The waitress panicked and called the police to get this idiot out of there which they did, the waitress felt that the idiot and all of his friends would wind up in a hospital or worse much worse. True story. No comment from Nicky Scarfo who is serving a life sentance for several murders.

These markets take up about 6 blocks on 9th street.

This was the owner Joey Vento who died in 2011.
The reason I wanted to show this picture is because of his sign, read the the sign lower right, caused quite a stir in the tri - state area, Pennsylvania, New jersey and Delaware.
What he is saying is that you cannot order your steak sandwhich in Dutch or Swedish [:D]

To forumites from across the pond a question:
The "tri-state area". Why do Americans use that term so much? I assume it can mean any three states? Why tri-state not bi-state or quad-state? Or are those terms used?
Thank-you

You almost spoke German[;)],
I wonder what would have happened early 20th century if that had been the case.

We wouldn't have had to translate our declaration of war against Imperial Germany?

Some say a language is reflection of a people's soul/culture/other intangeable stuff. That is probably the reason US english is slowly growing away from British english. If that is so, would there be a feedback loop when you take over a language??
Nice answer BTW [:D]
RE: Two Map Scenarios
I will try to answer that warspite, Philadelphia which is where the Delaration of Independence was drawn up and published,
you heard of it I assume, it was designed to get the citizens of the new country to kick the British out,
which it did, but these many years later I am not all that sure it was a good idea [:(] I happen to like Kings and Queens especially in Pinochle. [;)]
Ok serious now, People who were born in the Philadelphia area tend to stay in that area, those that left some went to live in Delaware but most of them moved to New Jersey and its beautiful beaches on the Atlantic shore. There is a lot of cooperation in law enforcement, infrastructure, school systems between these three states.
Pennsylvania has New York to the North and Ohio to the west which is like distant cousins, "glad to see you once in awhile kind a thing" So I guess it is called that because there is so much cooperation between the three states. Maybe one of our Congress reps. could answer that better than I can.
