THE OGADEN WAR 1977-78

Post by lion_of_judah »

New scenario I'm working on is the "Ogaden war 1977-78. fought between Ethiopia and Somalia.

Historical Background-

the Ogaden war was a conventional conflict between Somalia and Ethiopia in 1977-78 over the Ogaden region of Ethiopia. Fighting erupted as Somalia sought to exploit a temporary shift in the regional balance of power in their favor to occupy the Ogaden region, claimed to be part of Greater Somalia.

Origins of the war-

while the cause of the conflict was the desire of the Somali Government of Siad Barre to incorporate the Somali-inhabited region of Ethiopia into a Greater Somali, it is unlikely Barre would have ordered the invasion if circumstances had not turned in his favor. Ethiopia had historically dominated the region. By the beginning of the war, the Somali National army was only 35,000 men strong and was vastly outnumbered by the Ethiopian forces. However, throughout the 1970's, Somalia was the recipient of large amounts of soviet military aid. The SNA ( Somali National army) had three times the tank force and air force of Ethiopia.

Even as Somalia gained military strength, Ethiopia grew weaker. In September 1974, Emperor Haile Selassie had been overthrown by the Derg Military council, marking a period of turmoil during which the Military fought a brief civil war for control of the country.

Screenshots to follow soon. unit scale will be division, brigade and Bltn

Your ideas for scenario themes are as good as Grymme's - never heard of any attempt to cover that war in any wargame I happen to know of. I have seen some of your projects and felt quite inspires but alas I don't play against the AI anymore and have been failing to find opponents most of the time. I am assuming that this one is going to be ATG compatible? BTW, people whom I was trying to talk into playing Grymme's "The Soviet-Afghan War 1979 - '89" suggested you might be interested. Are You?

BTW II, did You find that TOAW III Ukraine map you were looking for?
