New scenario: Facing The Bear (The War That Never Was)

Post by Yokes »

Installment #4 of The War That Never Was series (a book by Michael A. Palmer). This one takes place on the all-important northern Norway theater.

I have not finished playing through this yet, so there may be bugs. Please report any you find.

Enjoy!

Edit: lots of small updates.

This is a big scenario!
Currently part way in as Russian side (obviously) and all nicely working overall. The only thing encountered is one sub is intercepting the one Russian SAG near the coast of Norway and is at least at periscope depth, that does make it an easy target, but might be intended.

This could take me a while to play through!

I think I am now about an hour in, the subs aren't an issue a few probably have been up to look around then drop back down, i've only managed to localise the one.
A Trafalgar class was a bit easier and came belting in at 22 knots so might need a look at?

So far I have managed to get an air drop which worked really really well. One bit that might again need a look at, is the air drop returning aircraft were then being classed as the "air mail" condition, so if i lost one it was as if i'd lost one of the reinforcement flights.

This then triggered some Norwegian reinforcements. I wont say what happened as its a spoiler but those that arrived I wasn't so sure of, they basically triggered in a mass quite close to areas i had already scouted. They also struggled to path out of that area. As its such a massive scenario part of me wondered if it would be simpler to have them as available to player side or delete sorry.

The allied land attack was also particulalrly well worked out I thought.

Even though I couldn't script the airdrop aircraft being re-used later as reinforcements, feel free to consider them vital for future airlift flights and therefore heavily penalized for loss.

I have an idea to "fix" the Trafalgar sub issue. I had the same issue in my playtesting, and the way I wanted to address it didn't really work. I have a new idea that should improve things.

The "surprise" ships are supposed to be in port and then sortie, but as far as I can tell the docking/undocking features don't work yet. If I am wrong on this, someone please correct me. For now, I find the best way to do this is to teleport them. Not the best solution, but it works. And the pathfinding is a pain. I already gave them the desired path, it is the formation keeping that is problematic given the very tight fjords that need to be negotiated. I'm not sure there is much more that I can do.

Thanks again for your comments. They are always well received!

A few hours in playing as NATO and getting swatted from the sky! Thanks again for this challenging and complex scenario.
