Splendid Rambler (1968) -- new scenario for testing

Post by Mgellis »

My newest scenario, ready for beta testing. This one involves a fictional Australian raid in 1968 on an Indonesian installation and the journey back home to safe waters. Please let me know what you think. Thanks!

This is a pretty good scenario, though it might be a bit too long. I had no difficulty destroying the land facilities, and while the ships got shot up by fighters (HMAS Brisbane) and the Indonesian destroyer (HMAS Vendetta) they pretty much looked after themselves (though the Mirage IIIs downed a couple of MiG-17s and two B-25s). I was going to use the A-4Gs to destroy the destroyer, but it closed on my ships before they arrived and the two warships had no real problem sinking it by themselves. Nothing happened on the long trek back to Darwin, so this could be dropped from the scenario.

I just uploaded a new version of the beta. I hope it is a little more challenging, although...

***WARNING: SPOILER!***

The Indonesian Whiskey submarines I put in do not seem very effective.

I've played this under both build 490 and 497.

Under 490 I found it a nice little scenario, about as balanced as you can make these two sides for that time period without getting unrealistic and I did manage to loose it the first time by playing too defensively and forgetting just how vulnerable the old ships without point defenses were to low flying aircraft with iron bombs.

I'm interested if anyone has played this under the latest release candidate - Build 497? I found it impossible to get the Tartar missles to track anything for more than 1 sec under the new build - it seems that radar is constantly loosing and reacquiring lock so the semi-active missles go blind and self destruct.

Yes, this is a problem. I tried it with several different ships and it seems to be happening to a large number of SAMs. Definitely a bug of some kind! Ack!

Thanks for the heads up on this guys, it _should_ be fixed in Build 498.

Just tested it. With Build 498, the Tartar missiles now appear to track their targets properly. They don't hit very often, but I think that's just the Tartar missile. When I dropped a Belknap into the scenario to test it, the Standards hit a lot more often.

--SPOILER ALERT--

First play of the scenario, Joker 3 and 4 attacked with bombs DLG 41 Brisbane, minutes before the cap of two Mirage III flying above the destroyers reached bingo and left uncovered them, one Tartar SAM shotdown one of the attackers, but two bombs detonated inside the destroyer, after some time a failure message was displayed.

Spoiler Alert as well

Played halfway through so far, no problems. One Joker was circling inside Tartar min range on me but got him with 46th 127mm shot. Missiles got other fine. Not real sure what I'll do with the goblin my planes found on way back since the strafing joker took out my Ikara's. Think I'll just try to divert around and see.

Just want to thank Mgellis for all the great scenario work he is doing. I immensely enjoy your scenarios and want to call you out for the great work.

I don't want to belittle work other scenario builders do. I know you all put a lot of effort into releasing them. But Mgellis just seems to have been at it since day 1 and does quantity and quality.
